Viola Davis Makes History
Viola Davis became the first African American to win the Outstanding Lead Actress category for her performance as the complicated, morally ambiguous Annalise Keating on "How to Get Away With Murder." The two-time Oscar nominee, who was largely relegated to supporting roles in films, was thrilled to finally get recognition for her work. Davis got a huge hug from fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson when her name was called.
In her acceptance speech, she said, "The only thing that separates women of color from everyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."
