October Halloween Horrorfest 2014

by apathy2673 | created - 01 Oct 2014 | updated - 8 months ago | Public

A horror movie a day for October and Halloween. I will try to watch as many horror movies from 2014, which are available on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon as possible.I might check out Crackle and Popcornflix etc. So it won't be pretty...I'm going into these cold, meaning I won't read any reviews before watching but I will suffer through the crap to hopefully find something good.

Long story short, wound up in hospital for 6 weeks and couldn't finish this list in October 2014. I'll slowly get to 31 but boy have the movies been bad.

1. Hatchet III (2013)

R | 81 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

25 Metascore

A search and recovery team heads into the haunted swamp to pick up the pieces, and Marybeth learns the secret to ending the voodoo curse that has left Victor Crowley haunting and terrorizing Honey Island Swamp for decades.

Director: BJ McDonnell | Stars: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams

Votes: 6,909

It's 2013 but I hadn't seen it(seen 1&2). Gory(non CGI), fully competent, well lit and enjoyable. More of an Aliens/Predator meets Hatchet than Hatchet but still reccomended.

2. The Last Light (2014)

Not Rated | 93 min | Drama, Thriller

Seven strangers find themselves trapped inside an abandoned hospital after an unexplainable apocalyptic event. In addition to being haunted by what they've lost, the strangers must also ... See full summary »

Director: Andrew Hyatt | Stars: Edward Furlong, Ed Quinn, Jeff Fahey, Molly Hagan

Votes: 445

Well lit and acted. The twist is obvious so it gets kinda slow towards the end. When you find yourself wondering about the production schedule and how many days Edward Furlong and Jeff Fahey were on set...well...

3. The 13th Unit (2014)

Not Rated | 79 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Seven strangers find themselves trapped in an underground storage facility, struggling to survive while being hunted by a supernatural beast that resides inside the mysterious 13th unit.

Director: Theophilus Lacey | Stars: John Allen Phillips, Lance Aaron, Aidan Bristow, Robbie Daymond

Votes: 382

*beep* this movie, this movie sucks. If storage unit centers get you off, then this is the movie for you. It is endless scenes of well lit storage units. Every death by the monster happens after the victim is dragged into one of these units, off screen. The filmmakers didn't even bother to design a monster...you never see it. No gore, no monster, no fun. Do not watch this movie if you are looking for Halloween goodness. You're welcome.

4. Fields of the Dead (2014)

84 min | Horror

Seven friends find themselves on an isolated farm. Here, they discover an ancient book, which summons demons from the surrounding woods. Now, these friends will have to find a way out of the fields, if they want to survive.

Director: Daniel B. Iske | Stars: Lara Adkins, Mark Booker, Mike Delange, Chelsie Hartness

Votes: 507

Fields of the no blood and gore...and no boobies. Why do horror movies these days think they have to aspire to something? Give us less story and acting and replace it with gore and shower scenes. Chelsie Hartness is drop dead gorgeous, and a good actor, hopefully we'll see more of her...she was the only reason to keep watching this dreck.

UPDATE! I've been duped, this is a re-titling of a 2008 movie called The Wretched. So it's not a 2014 title. FFS!

5. Rise of the Animals (2011)

Not Rated | 70 min | Adventure, Comedy, Horror

In a world where animals have turned on humanity, a teen travels across the country in search of the girl of his dreams.

Director: Chris Wojcik | Stars: Greg Hoople, Stephanie Motta, Adam Schonberg, Nikki Preston

Votes: 582

Unimpressed with the last few wastes of time I went for some comedy. Starts off hilariously well with a ridiculous non CGI deer attack. Then it becomes some kind of love story and the animals don't attack. Until we get intentionally bad CGI animal attacks. SKIP IT.

6. Haunting of Cellblock 11 (2014)

R | 85 min | Horror, Thriller

A group of ghost hunters must up their game to compete in the competitive world of paranormal TV shows, leading them to a truly haunted prison with a grisly past that proves to be more than they bargained for.

Director: Andrew P. Jones | Stars: Jeffrey Johnson, Linara Washington, Charley Koontz, John Zderko

Votes: 620

If I owned a physical copy of this movie I would smash it into 1000 pieces, flush it down my toilet and gladly pay a sewer tech to dig up my land and unclog this piece of crap from my pipes. That is all. Do NOT watch.

7. Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)

Not Rated | 91 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

30 Metascore

When a group of friends enjoying a bachelor cruise in the Caribbean stumble upon a research facility on a remote island, a deadly virus is unleashed. The group must find a way to survive before the flesh eating virus consumes them all.

Director: Kaare Andrews | Stars: Sean Astin, Currie Graham, Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton

Votes: 6,048

Appropriately disgusting, thoroughly enjoying solid Halloween horror fare. Could have used more Sean Astin but enjoy it! Ebola might make this movie seem quite relevant...

8. Malice (2012– )

Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

At the Turner house, the norm isn't the norm.

Stars: Brittany Martz, Philip J. Cook, Rebekkah Johnson, Mark Hyde

Votes: 67

Apparently, this was a web series and this is the full compilation. Very creative, creepy and psychedelic and an absolutely perfect Halloween Horrorfest viewing. Good stuff. Brittany Martz definitely has a career ahead of her.

9. The Coed and the Zombie Stoner (2014)

Unrated | 91 min | Comedy, Horror

When a nerdy sorority girl falls in love with a zombie, it's only a matter of time before a zombie apocalypse is unleashed on campus. The sorority girl discovers that weed is the cure--now ... See full summary »

Director: Glenn Miller | Stars: Catherine Annette, Grant O'Connell, Jamie Noel, Aaron Caleb

Votes: 1,094

Hilarious. Totally gets what it is. Weed, massive gratuitous boob shots as an FU, 2 hilarious hot girls who are naked almost all of their time on screen, gore, zombies and cartoon sound effects. It's actually a cute love story as well. Why would you NOT want to watch this?

10. Rabid Love (2013)

Not Rated | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

Five recent college grads go for one last vacation in the woods during the summer of 1984 and one of them is infected with a mad scientist's synthetic rabies virus.

Director: Paul J. Porter | Stars: Hayley Derryberry, Jessica Sonneborn, Brandon Stacy, Josh Hammond

Votes: 222

I can't think of anything to say about this movie other than that it's bad and unenjoyable. So, this movie is bad and unenjoyable. Oh wait, this movie has the worst soundtrack you will ever hear...must've been the directors' brothers' band.

11. Alien: Isolation (2014 Video Game)

M | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Set 15 years after the events of Alien, gamers play as Ripley's daughter and embark on a mission to find her missing mother.

Director: Alistair Hope | Stars: Andrea Deck, George Anton, Kezia Burrows, Richie Campbell

Votes: 2,950

Had to watch football this weekend...how bout them Cowboys!? Anyways...easier to play a horror game than watch a horror movie while watching football. Decent game but wait for a major price drop..

12. Deliverance from Evil (2012)

TV-14 | 90 min | Horror

When a married couple lose their son in their new home, they soon realize there is an evil presence in their house.

Directors: Eduardo Quiroz, Jose Quiroz | Stars: Angel Aviles, Molly Celaschi, Victor Miller, Jose Rosete

Votes: 86

Appears to have been made by friends and family in their living rooms on the weekends. The only ”scary" thing that happens is a chair moves. I would say do NOT watch this under any circumstances except for the appearance of the psychic. A clearly Latino/Hispanic actor doing a Vincent Price accent...which changes to Italian when he is getting killed. Seriously...you have to see this guy...laughter is the best medicine.

13. Carrie (2013)

R | 100 min | Drama, Horror

53 Metascore

A shy girl, outcasted by her peers and sheltered by her religious mother, unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Director: Kimberly Peirce | Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Gabriella Wilde, Portia Doubleday

Votes: 120,414 | Gross: $35.27M

Perfectly acceptable Halloween horror flick. Even if you've seen the original.

14. Sweatshop (2009)

Unrated | 90 min | Horror

A group of friends break into an abandoned factory in order to throw a impromptu party; unaware that it is not as empty as they originally believed.

Director: Stacy Davidson | Stars: Ashley Kay, Melanie Donihoo, Peyton Wetzel, Danielle Jones

Votes: 999

Not 2014 but I wanted to watch something sleazy and gory. Definitely sleazy, somewhat gory. How can a movie about people in a warehouse getting killed off be completly incoherent? Watch this and find out. Also this movie has a punk rocker with a spiked mohawk break dancing...like actually spinning around on the ground on his back...

15. Sledge (2014)

Not Rated | 75 min | Horror

Sledge hits you from the beginning with humor and originality. Opening with Assly's True American Horror television program, the action kicks off instantly with skull crushing deaths from ... See full summary »

Directors: John B Sovie II, Kristian Hanson | Stars: Dustin Bowman, Rachel Cornell, Tino Faygo, Kristian Hanson

Votes: 94

This is as bad as horror movies get...I still have 16 more to go though. Hopefully they'll have more than one light on set, someone who can record two actors exchanging dialogue and won't have detestable characters who take far too long to be killed. You have been warned.

16. The Ouija Experiment (2013)

Not Rated | 92 min | Horror

Film student Brandon and four friends play with a Ouija board, unwittingly opening a portal to the spirit world and a drowned girl's deadly mystery.

bad, baD, bAD, BAD!

Director: Steven R. Monroe | Stars: Jemma Dallender, Joe Absolom, Yavor Baharov, George Zlatarev

Votes: 22,457 | Gross: $0.00M

If you like revenge movies, you'll like this. If you like torture movies, you'll like this. If you enjoy brutal rape scenes, you'll like this. I'm not so crazy about brutal rape scenes. It's a pretty well done movie so I'd recommend it if this is your type.

18. Devil in My Ride (2013)

After Doreen has been possessed by the devil on her wedding night, her groom Hank, and her rebellious brother Travis, put aside their differences to travel across country from Chicago to ... See full summary »

Director: Gary Michael Schultz | Stars: Frank Zieger, Joey Bicicchi, Erin Breen, Sid Haig

Votes: 130

I'm beginning to think I'll never see a good horror movie again. Not enough horror in this one, way too much lame comedy.

19. I, Frankenstein (2014)

PG-13 | 92 min | Action, Fantasy, Horror

30 Metascore

Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.

Director: Stuart Beattie | Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Miranda Otto, Virginie Le Brun

Votes: 72,895 | Gross: $19.08M

Take the annoying Gargoyles out, make it Frankenstein's Monster vs the Demons and this would be a better movie. Acceptable Halloween demonic fare. A lot of martial arts action. This would be a good movie to watch on a plane ride.

20. Seed 2 (2014)

78 min | Horror

Coming back from her bachelor party in Las Vegas, Christine and her friends are driving through the hot desert of Nevada. But they are not alone - serial killer Max Seed is back and he brought the whole family.

Director: Marcel Walz | Stars: Natalie Scheetz, Christa Campbell, Caroline Williams, Nick Principe

Votes: 755

This is not a movie. This is an awful, incoherent mess. It's non-linear as well, adding to the confusion. It starts off with a girl being raped by a pistol and I'd say it goes downhill from there but it just goes nowhere and makes no sense. Why they made it makes even less sense when you realize it's a sequel to a Uwe Boll movie. Bad beyond belief.

21. The Dead the Damned and the Darkness (2014)

90 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

To reach the sea, a soldier has to fight his way through zombie hordes as well attempt to help other survivors along the way.

Director: Rene Perez | Stars: Robert Tweten, Iren Levy, John J. Welsh, Richard Tyson

Votes: 265

Slow, boring and bad. I guess it's a sequel...hopefully the first movie was better than this one.

22. Beneath (V) (2013)

Unrated | 89 min | Adventure, Horror

34 Metascore

A crew of coal miners becomes trapped 600 feet below ground after a disastrous collapse. As the air grows more toxic and time runs out, they slowly descend into madness and begin to turn on one another.

Director: Ben Ketai | Stars: Brent Briscoe, Kurt Caceres, Eric Etebari, Jeff Fahey

Votes: 3,779

Above average, well lit and acted. Should make for decent(Descent?) Halloween or horror viewing. As an extra added bonus, Jeff Fahey is in it!

A substitute teacher in Columbus, Ohio was convicted of four felonies and will likely spend significant time in prison for showing this movie to her Spanish class. That's all the endorsement I need to watch this! There's basically a gory death every few minutes, and the occasional comedy bit, one of which involves farting Japanese lesbians. Thumbs up for a Halloween viewing! And what was that teacher thinking!?

24. Dead Silence (2007)

R | 89 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

34 Metascore

A young widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Ryan Kwanten, Amber Valletta, Donnie Wahlberg, Michael Fairman

Votes: 75,908 | Gross: $16.81M

This was recommended for me by Gob Bluth on Netflix. Pretty good, creepy horror story. Could've used more gore and deaths but this is proper Halloween viewing.

25. App (2013)

75 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller

A young psychology student is drawn into the dark and fearful world of a diabolic and mysterious App that starts to terrorize her, distributing compromising photographs, videos and text ... See full summary »

Director: Bobby Boermans | Stars: Hannah Hoekstra, Isis Cabolet, Robert de Hoog, Mark van Eeuwen

Votes: 2,144

Stylish, Dutch and dubbed into english. This movie is about an evil app that wreaks havoc kind of like in Final Destination. It's also kind of like the type of horror movies Joshua Jackson was in. Not great but slick and watchable.

26. Don't Blink (2014)

Not Rated | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Ten people arrive at a secluded mountain resort to find it completely deserted. With no gas for the return trip, the visitors are forced to stay and investigate the mystery surrounding the abandoned lodge.

Director: Travis Oates | Stars: Mena Suvari, Brian Austin Green, Joanne Kelly, Fiona Gubelmann

Votes: 4,717

A small group goes to a mountain lodge but find it's empty. Faucets are running etc and it looks like people were there recently. Then people in the group start to dissappear. Sometimes they actually dissappear on camera. Thats it. People dissappear. Where do they go? The filmmakers couldn't be bothered with coming up with an answer. People in this area just go poof.

27. Alien Abduction (2014)

Not Rated | 85 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

46 Metascore

A vacationing family encounters an alien threat in this thriller based on the real-life Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon in North Carolina.

Director: Matty Beckerman | Stars: Katherine Sigismund, Corey Eid, Riley Polanski, Jillian Clare

Votes: 7,044

Typical shaky found footage movie. This one is about an attack by aliens. Average at best.

28. Europa Report (2013)

PG-13 | 90 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

An international crew of astronauts undertakes a privately funded mission to search for life on Jupiter's fourth largest moon.

Director: Sebastián Cordero | Stars: Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist, Christian Camargo, Embeth Davidtz

Votes: 60,718 | Gross: $0.13M

This movie is lots of scenes of people typing on keyboards while looking at video screens. Type type type. Look look look. Definitely not good Halloween viewing.

29. Gallowwalkers (2012)

R | 90 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

A cursed gunman (Snipes) whose victims come back from the dead recruits a young warrior to help in the fight against a gang of zombies.

Director: Andrew Goth | Stars: Wesley Snipes, Kevin Howarth, Riley Smith, Tanit Phoenix Copley

Votes: 6,525

A zombie western that's heavy on the western, light on the zombies. The director is a Sergio Leone fan for sure. Decent western, not good Halloween viewing.

30. Storage 24 (2012)

R | 87 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

In London, a military plane crashes leaving its highly classified contents strewn across the city. Completely unaware that the city is in lockdown, a group of people become trapped inside a storage facility with a highly unwelcome guest.

Director: Johannes Roberts | Stars: Noel Clarke, Colin O'Donoghue, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Laura Haddock

Votes: 6,036

Not too bad. A lot of the murderous alien, some good gore and a decent body count.

31. Halloween (1978)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

78 Metascore

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes

Time to watch the best horror/Halloween movie of all time.
