The Dark Tower Cast

by Dormandulas | created - 29 Nov 2014 | updated - 01 Dec 2014 | Public

A list of the actors and actresses that I think would make good characters for a film adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. I imagine the the franchise to be split into 7 films that start modestly with the desert journey of Roland and Jake, and ascend in cast number and, vainly though importantly, cast popularity and star quality. If the series is started with a moderate budget and an enthusiastic, material knowledgeable director the budget of each film will increase with the characters that attract popularity to the franchise. It should be done the same way as Harry Potter in the sense that directors may be switched. That's what these books are about, right? They are so drastically different from one another that they almost demand to be handed around. I would like to see the first two done by the same director because they are so similar and it would be important to establish the feel of the world more completely. But let the battle with Blaine and Lud and the drama of Mejis be tackled separately, as they were for Stephen when he wrote them at such vastly different stages of his life. Lastly I just want emphasis the HUGE potential Wizard and Glass has for developing a fan base and spinning the series out from the initial trilogy into a crazy new adventure. My imagination depicts the story of Mejis as a sort of theatre play, very standalone and yet moral in a way. It is a mini-mystery, and a very interesting challenge for a potential screenwriter..

1. Daniel Day-Lewis

Actor | There Will Be Blood

Born in London, England, Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis is the second child of Cecil Day-Lewis (pseudonym Nicholas Blake), Poet Laureate of the U.K., and his second wife, actress Jill Balcon. His maternal grandfather was Sir Michael Balcon, an important figure in the history of British cinema and ...

as Roland Deschain

Daniel Day-Lewis has proven he can do absolutely anything, and will put the work in. He obsesses over stuff, and isn't that what you need? He's old enough, he's wise enough and he gets wholly committed to projects. Pair him with a smart, young, enthusiastic director and the potential is unreal.

2. Iain Glen

Actor | Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Iain Glen is a Scottish actor, who was born on June 24, 1961 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy, an independent school for boys (now co-educational), followed by the University of Aberdeen. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he was the winner of...

as Roland Deschain Alternate

Because it also depends on who plays Young Roland, awkwardly, I had to make two choice for Roland's casting. Iain Glen is my alternate choice because he would work amazingly with Scott Eastwood, who is my first choice for Young Roland. Ian's voice is very deep and perfect if he gets the accent right, which anyone can be taught. Ian would be a real nice rookie surprise pick for Roland.

3. Andrew Scott

Actor | Pride

Andrew Scott was born in Dublin, Ireland, the middle child with two sisters, Sarah and Hannah. His parents, Jim and Nora, sent him to a private Catholic school for boys. He did a little acting as a child when he was in a couple of commercials on Irish TV. At 17 he was chosen to star in his first ...

as The Man in Black

I almost feel bad casting this one because it feels like cheating it's so perfect. Andrew was simply born for the role. Just watch Sherlock. The Man in Black needs crazy, no holds barred, and this guy delivers it. There's just nothing left to say.

4. Charlize Theron

Producer | Monster

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a city in the greater Johannesburg area, in South Africa, the only child of Gerda Theron (née Maritz) and Charles Theron. She was raised on a farm outside the city. Theron is of Afrikaner (Dutch, with some French Huguenot and German) descent, and Afrikaner ...

as Alice

The bartender at Sheb's, Alice's tale is the first act of The Gunslinger, and important albeit brief. Her demise is very dramatic, and in need of some good acting, which Charlize is capable of. She would, unfortunately for me, have to make herself look ugly, but we know she can do this from Monster (sorry Charlize..?).

5. Laramie Eppler

Actor | The Tree of Life

Laramie was born and still lives in his hometown of Iowa Park, Texas. His mother is Misty Eppler. He attended Iowa Park elementary school at the time he was cast for his first movie and now attends the middle school. He is now 13, but was in 5th grade when he was selected for The Tree of Life (2011)...

as Jake Chambers

This kid did an amazing job in The Tree of Life, and he has just the right amount of wholesomeness and fight to pull of Jake. He's 14 right now, so someone please read this and make these movies happen before he gets any older!

6. Aaron Paul

Actor | Breaking Bad

Aaron Paul was born Aaron Paul Sturtevant in Emmett, Idaho, to Darla (Haynes) and Robert Sturtevant, a retired Baptist minister. While growing up, Paul took part in church programs, and performed in plays.

He attended Centennial High School in Boise, Idaho. It was there, in eighth grade, that Aaron ...

as Eddie Dean

Aaron's great. First, it's hard to play a drug addict, and we already know he can do it. Second, he actually WANTS to play Eddie, he said he would be 'honoured.' Sounds like he would put the work in? Yeah. And can you imagine him with Zoe? Because I can.

7. Jack Nicholson

Actor | Chinatown

Jack Nicholson, an American actor, producer, director and screenwriter, is a three-time Academy Award winner and twelve-time nominee. Nicholson is also notable for being one of two actors - the other being Michael Caine - who have received Oscar nomination in every decade from the 1960s through the...

as Enrico Balazar

This guy is badass, and so is Jack Nicholson. He's described as a large man who loves building card towers and snapping at people. He gets a great showdown, and Jack would get to go bizzerk!

8. Ray Liotta

Actor | Goodfellas

Intense is the word for Ray Liotta. He specializes in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Even in his nice-guy roles in Field of Dreams (1989) and Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), you get the impression that something is smoldering inside of him. Liotta maintains a steady stream...

as Jack Andolini

This guy is a crazy son of a bitch who shows up a couple times throughout the series. I think Ray could embody this kind of everlasting quality well. He is suppose to turn out smarter than he looks, and he is very loyal to Enrico.

9. Neil Hopkins

Actor | Lost

Neil is best known for his recurring role on "Lost", playing Liam, the heroin-addicted rockstar brother of Charlie (Dominic Monaghan). His other TV credits include recurring roles on the Emmy-Award Nominated "Big Love" and the Paul Haggis series, "Crash"; as well as a wide variety of guest starring...

as Henry Dean

If you've seen Lost, you'll know this guy can also play a drug addict. He looks like a crazy badass, and could totally pull off Aaron's older dick brother because they even look alike. He's a villain, for all intense purposes, and is essential for building some of the conflict in the plot with Eddie's addiction.

10. Zoe Saldana

Actress | Avatar

Zoe Saldana was born on June 19, 1978 in Passaic, New Jersey, to Asalia Nazario and Aridio Saldaña. Her father was Dominican and her mother is Puerto Rican. She was raised in Queens, New York. When she was 10 years old, she and her family moved to the Dominican Republic, where they would live for ...

as Odetta Holmes, Detta Walker, Susannah Dean and... Mia

First of all, Zoe was raised in Queens. Second, she's brilliant, and has proven she can act like she's worlds away from Queens. She's got an impressively diverse bio. I think she would be good at playing rich, crazy, in love and completely deranged all intertwined very well.

11. Andy Serkis

Actor | War for the Planet of the Apes

English film actor, director and author Andy Serkis is known for his performance capture roles comprising motion capture acting, animation and voice work for such computer-generated characters as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-2003) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), ...

as Oy

You might be shaking your head, but Andy's a very talented actor, willing to work around any boundaries. If his motion capture imaging could be somehow be shrunk to the size of a Billy-bumbler, why not? I guess we'll just wait and see when Star Wars comes out, the first teaser was released literally yesterday!

12. Bruce Spence

Actor | Mad Max 2

Bruce Spence was born on September 17, 1945 in Auckland, North Island, New Zealand. He is an actor, known for Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). He has been married to Jenny since September 16, 1973. They ...

as Gasher

Probably one of the scariest people alive, just imagine Bruce Spence from the Matrix... absolutely terrifying. I can imagine him sprinting through the maze holding on to Jake. And the scene at the bridge with the grenade.

13. Joaquin Phoenix

Actor | Her

Joaquin Phoenix was born Joaquin Rafael Bottom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Arlyn (Dunetz) and John Bottom, and is the middle child in a brood of five. His parents, from the continental United States, were then serving as Children of God missionaries. His mother is from a Jewish family from New ...

as Andrew Quick/The Tick-Tock Man

Joaquin is such a great actor and I've been waiting and waiting for him to play a villain. Although the Tick-Tock Man wouldn't get much screen time on the whole, he is the main villain of a film, and he gets a near-death-life-saved moment and lots of action and drama which I think Joaquin can nail with the limited screen time.

14. Sam Elliott

Actor | A Star Is Born

Tall, thin, wiry Sam Elliott is the classic picture of the American cowboy. Elliott began his acting career on the stage and his film debut was in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Although his future wife, Katharine Ross co-starred in the film, the two did not meet until they filmed The ...

as Eldred Jonas and Blaine the Mono

Sam works so perfectly for Eldred that I feel like I don't have to explain it, while for Blaine, because he is a voice actor and because Blaine is known for doing John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart impressions, I think he'd also be very good, as long as he can make the characters feel distinct and different.

15. Danny Bonaduce

Actor | The Partridge Family

Danny Bonaduce was born on August 13, 1959 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA as Dante Daniel Bonaduce. He is an actor and producer, known for The Partridge Family (1970), Charlotte's Web (1973) and That '70s Show (1998). He has been married to Amy Railsback since November 22, 2010. He was ...

as Clay Reynolds

Okay, this one I'm basing solely on looks. I'ver never seen this guy act, but Clay is the shyest of the lot, described as Eldred's right hand man and good-looking with red hair. He later runs off with Coral Thorin, remember. This guy has the right amount of creepy and good looks to pull all that complexity off with just a silent face.

16. Jake Gyllenhaal

Actor | Nightcrawler

Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California, to producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner (née Achs) and director Stephen Gyllenhaal. He is the brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, who played his sister in Donnie Darko (2001). His godmother is actress Jamie Lee Curtis. His mother is from...

as Roy Depape

Roy is described as insanely short-tempered, and it is true that he basically instigates all the drama in Wizard and Glass, and won't shut up and stoping screwing things around the entire time. He's also super sleazy. I think Jake could have so much fun with this and go over the top. He even gets killed by Roland.

17. Scott Eastwood

Actor | Suicide Squad

Scott Eastwood was born Scott Clinton Reeves in Carmel, Monterey County, California, to Jacelyn Ann Reeves, a flight attendant, and Clint Eastwood, an actor and director. He grew up in Hawaii. Scott has a younger sister, Kathryn Eastwood, and several half-siblings. In 2006, Scott made his film ...

as Young Roland

During the events of both Wizard & Glass and The Wind through the Keyhole, Roland is much younger, and requires a different actor. Who could play this better than Scott Eastwood, an accomplished actor and the son of the legend himself. Did I mention he looks the part, and would go amazingly with Elizabeth Olsen?

18. Eddie Redmayne

Actor | Les Misérables

British actor Eddie Redmayne is the first Generation X male to have won an acting Oscar (for The Theory of Everything (2014)).

Edward John David Redmayne was born and raised in London, England, the son of Patricia (Burke) and Richard Charles Tunstall Redmayne, a businessman. His great-grandfather ...

as Young Roland Alternate

Eddie's my second choice for Young Roland, which might sound weird because he only works with older Roland's first casting, Daniel Day-Lewis, so I can never have both the Roland's I want, but it's truly how it worked out, and I'm okay with it. I have some leniency. As far as what Eddie has going for him is dedication, a commitment to accents and an interest in learning extensively about a topic, for example Stephen Hawking.

19. Elizabeth Olsen

Actress | Martha Marcy May Marlene

Elizabeth Chase "Lizzie" Olsen (born February 16, 1989) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in the films Silent House (2011), Liberal Arts (2012), Godzilla (2014), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and Captain America: Civil War (2016). For her role in the critically-acclaimed Martha ...

as Susan Delgado

Because I think Elizabeth would go along so well with Scott, she's my top choice. She is wholesome, and seems like she is from the past, which is essential. She is also reminiscent of Charlize Theron to me, which is important. Because there are some old memories and similarities there for Roland.

20. Miles Teller

Actor | The Spectacular Now

Miles Alexander Teller is an American actor and musician. For his performance in the film The Spectacular Now (2013), he won the Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. He has appeared in the films Rabbit Hole (2010), Footloose (2011), Project X (2012), That ...

as Cuthbert Allgood

Cuthbert is described as constantly joking around and taking nobody serious, Miles is perfect, because he seems this way in real life. I don't know if he's done any old school stuff but judging from his voice it sounds like he'd be able to drawl it out and make himself sound like a rough old-time cowboy.

21. Armie Hammer

Actor | The Social Network

Armand Douglas Hammer was born in Los Angeles, California, to Dru Ann (Mobley) and Michael Armand Hammer, a businessman. His great-grandfather, Armand Hammer, was a prominent tycoon and philanthropist who ran the company Occidental Petroleum for many decades. Armie's ancestry includes ...

as Alain Johns

Alain is suppose to be the softie of the three, the one who cries after the battle and has the 'touch.' He's quieter than the others, but bigger and stronger, and carries the largest gun. Armie can already be a cowboy, and he can already be a good actor (Lone Ranger and Social Network), so just combine the two.

22. Marcia Cross

Actress | Desperate Housewives

Marcia Anne Cross was born on March 25, 1962 in Marlborough, Massachusetts. As a child, Marcia always wanted to be an actress, so she set out to have a career in acting. Cross graduated from the Juilliard School in New York, a naturally gifted girl. Her career began in 1984, when she joined the ...

as Coral Thorin

The traitorous sister of Mejis' Mayor Coral Thorin is a wild character who I think deserves some leniency. Marcia could make a scary version of this woman and would pair well with both Sam Elliot and Danny Bonaduce, both of whom she gets up close and personal with.

23. Melissa Leo

Actress | The Fighter

Melissa Chessington Leo is an American actress. She is known for her Academy Award-winning performance in the 2010 film The Fighter (2010). She was born on September 14, 1960, in New York City. Leo starred as the mother of boxer Micky Ward in the 2010 film The Fighter, also starring Mark Wahlberg. ...

as Cordelia Delgado

I learned recently that Cordelia is much more central to the story than I remembered. She is the more immediate villain, as she sells Susan to Hart Thorin the mayor, and is in the end completely deranged and actually the first person to set fire to Susan's funeral pyre; Rhea is second. Melissa likes to disappear into her roles, which is the mark of good acting. I have so much faith in this woman after The Fighter I know she can do anything she would like.

24. Meryl Streep

Actress | The Devil Wears Prada

Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 21 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...

as Rhea of Coos

Okay, I know I'm having too much fun. When I cast Jeff Bridges my mind just went crazy, and I realized there was something Meryl's never done, and it might involve a Snake... In all seriousness though, Rhea might be a make or break for Wizard and Glass, seeing as she is such a main character and a large part of the plot couldn't exist without her. Even the title attaches weight to her role. Can you think of someone better? Have you forgotten Streep could pull off an astronomer viking if she liked?

25. Sally Field

Actress | Forrest Gump

Sally Margaret Field was born in 1946 in Pasadena, California, to actress Margaret Field (née Morlan) and salesman Richard Dryden Field. Her parents divorced in 1950 and her mother then married stuntman Jock Mahoney, and they had a daughter, Princess O'Mahoney. She also has a brother, Richard Field...

as Olive Thorin

Wife of the Mayor Hart Thorin who is sleeping with Susan unabashedly, she is calm and docile and Susan's unlikely friend in Mejis. It would take a good actress to portray the somber pain and yet friendliness of Olive, and Sally has won an Oscar for this sort of thing (acting).

26. Adrien Brody

Actor | The Pianist

Adrien Nicholas Brody was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, the only child of retired history professor Elliot Brody and Hungarian-born photographer Sylvia Plachy. He accompanied his mother on assignments for the Village Voice, and credits her with making him feel comfortable in front of the ...

as Sheb

Adrien Brody is very talented, and Sheb has an important role despite his mental set back. It takes a good actor to portray the right amount of intelligence to make a character like that work, and this guy is one.

27. Jeff Bridges

Actor | The Big Lebowski

Jeffrey Leon Bridges was born on December 4, 1949 in Los Angeles, California, the son of well-known film and TV star Lloyd Bridges and his long-time wife Dorothy Dean Bridges (née Simpson). He grew up amid the happening Hollywood scene with big brother Beau Bridges. Both boys popped up, without ...

as Father Callahan

He's a drunk, he's old, and he's wise. I'm talking about the character. Jeff has done great work and fit's the part well enough for me. I think he can pretend to be scared and vulnerable as well. He also has to go through some *beep* up *beep* and I think Jeff would be down for it.

28. Peter Stormare

Actor | Fargo

Peter Stormare was born in Arbrå, Gävleborgs län, Sweden, to Gunhild (Holm) and Karl Ingvar Storm. He began his acting career at the Royal National Theatre of Sweden, performing for eleven years. In 1990 he became the Associate Artistic Director at the Tokyo Globe Theatre and directed productions ...

as Pimli Prentiss

This guy can play a dunce, and Fini is one. He's a sick little Taheen, and that would mean some CGI work. Even if it's just his voice, this guy is a good villain, and Finli has a surprisingly large amount of novel time.

29. Willem Dafoe

Actor | Spider-Man

Having made over one hundred films in his legendary career, Willem Dafoe is internationally respected for bringing versatility, boldness, and dare to some of the most iconic films of our time. His artistic curiosity in exploring the human condition leads him to projects all over the world, large ...

as Dandelo

Maybe he would give it away too easily, but Dafoe is seriously how I pictured Dandelo. He's an old washed up creepy comedian, Dafoe would be perfect.
