- DirectorKevin SmithStarsBrian O'HalloranJeff AndersonMarilyn GhigliottiA day in the lives of two convenience clerks named Dante and Randal as they annoy customers, discuss movies, and play hockey on the store roof. This is the film that inspired a generation to embrace the working-class slacker lifestyle. Dead-end jobs, pop culture references and almost non-stop profanity.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsJason LondonWiley WigginsMatthew McConaugheyThe adventures of high school and junior high students on the last day of school in May 1976.Mixed nineties 'Gen-X' film-making with seventies sensibilities. Quite possibly the quintessential anthem for introspective youths with nothing better to do.
- DirectorDaniel MyrickEduardo SánchezStarsHeather DonahueMichael C. WilliamsJoshua LeonardThree film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.Personally, I find this to be one of the most genuinely creepy, positively terrifying films ever made. Whether you agree with that statement or not is irrelevant. Despite whether or not the film can (Still) scare you, the level of craftsmanship is undeniable.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsHarvey KeitelTim RothMichael MadsenWhen a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant. The grand-daddy of nineties genre filmmaking. It's edgy, stylized, profane and violent. It wears it's influences on it's sleeves like badges of honor, and injects you with so much style that I challenge you to watch the film and not want a cigarette.
- DirectorOliver StoneStarsWoody HarrelsonJuliette LewisO-Lan JonesTwo victims of traumatized childhoods become lovers and psychopathic serial murderers irresponsibly glorified by the mass media. The ultimate filmic experiment. It's hyper-violent, bitingly satirical, and vulgar in every sense of the word. What makes Natural Born Killers so polarizing is it dares you to deeply reflect on your feelings towards violence, both in real life, and on the television you may or may not worship.
- DirectorTom HanksStarsTom HanksLiv TylerCharlize TheronA local Pennsylvania band scores a one-hit wonder in 1964 and rides the star-making machinery as long as they can, with lots of help from their manager.Standing in stark contrast to the profane, envelope-pushing indie flicks of the decade, this film is both sweet and satirical, with enough charm to get you out of any funk you may have found yourself in.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.Tarantino's Magnum Opus. It's the archetypal film of it's kind. Easily amongst the coolest movies ever made, and easily the most popular in all of Tarantino's filmography.
- DirectorAbel FerraraStarsHarvey KeitelBrian McElroyFrank AcciaritoWhile investigating a young nun's rape, a corrupt New York City police detective, with a serious drug and gambling addiction, tries to change his ways and find forgiveness and redemption.Released the same year as Reservoir Dogs (Which also starred Harvey Keitel, Bad Lieutenant could not be more different. It's gritty, uncomfortable and undeniably nihilistic. Believe me when I say that Keitel gives one of the best performances of his career.
- DirectorRoger AllersRob MinkoffStarsMatthew BroderickJeremy IronsJames Earl JonesLion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.Yes, the most *beep* entry on this list. This film doesn't necessarily personify the nineties movie. It's here because it's a masterpiece of animation, and one of my favorites.
- DirectorDavid LynchStarsNicolas CageLaura DernWillem DafoeYoung lovers Sailor and Lula run from the variety of weirdos that Lula's mom has hired to kill Sailor. This movie takes the tried and true road movie tropes and sets them ablaze. Wildly creative and darkly humorous at times, this is amongst my favorite films of all time.
