In 1981, Collins was offered a role in the second season of the then-struggling new soap opera Dynasty (1981–89) playing Alexis Carrington, the beautiful and vengeful ex-wife of tycoon Blake Carrington (John Forsythe). Her performance is generally credited as one factor in the fledgling show's subsequent rise in the Nielsen ratings[11] to a hit rivaling Dallas.

In 1985, Dynasty was the number-one show in the United States, beating out Dallas, which ranked number two.[12] For her portrayal of Alexis, Collins was nominated six times for a Golden Globe Award (every year from 1982 to 1987), winning once in 1983,[13] the same year she was nominated for an Emmy as Best Actress in a Drama Series.[14] Upon accepting the award, Collins thanked Sophia Loren for turning down the part of Alexis.

Having received acclaim for stage performances in productions as diverse as Love's Labours Lost, Godspell and Joe Orton's Loot, he advanced to the ABC Talent Development Program, which led to Dynasty's producer Aaron Spelling personally casting the Canadian as Adam Carrington in the show. Thomson debuted in Dynasty in 1982 and remained with the series until its cancellation in 1989. During the 1985-86 season, Thomson also appeared in three episodes of the Dynasty spin-off, The Colbys.[2]

After Dynasty ended, Thomson returned to daytime soaps. In 1990, he joined the now defunct series Santa Barbara (as the third actor to portray the character Mason Capwell). However, his commitment to Santa Barbara left him unable to reprise his role as Adam Carrington in the TV mini-series Dynasty: The Reunion in 1991 (he was subsequently replaced by British actor Robin Sachs). Thomson had roles on The Young and the Restless, Passions, the now defunct Sunset Beach, and in 2009 he appeared on Days of Our Lives.[2]

Thomson has appeared in eight different series produced by Aaron Spelling; Dynasty, Fantasy Island, Finder of Lost Loves, Glitter, The Love Boat, The Colbys, Beverly Hills, 90210 and Sunset Beach. He guest-starred in a variety of other series such as Murder She Wrote, Spider-Man, The Nanny, and Silk Stalkings.[2]

Corley is best known as the first actor to play Steven Carrington on the 1980s soap opera Dynasty. After that, Corley acted in fourteen movies, then produced five. Corley left Dynasty at the end of the second season in 1982[2][3] after complaining publicly in Interview that "Steven doesn't have any fun... He doesn't laugh; he has no humor,"[4] and also about Steven's "ever-shifting sexual preferences"[5] and wanting "to do other things".[3] The character was recast in 1983 with Jack Coleman; the change in appearance attributed to plastic surgery after an oil rig explosion.[2][3] Coleman remained on the show until 1988, but Corley returned to the role of Steven for the 1991 miniseries Dynasty: The Reunion when Coleman was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts.[5] Corley later appeared in the short-lived soap opera Bare Essence in 1983, playing Genie Francis' love interest, and co-starred opposite his former Dynasty co-star Pamela Sue Martin in the film Torchlight (1985).

His 1984 single "Square Rooms", from his debut album of the same name became a number one hit in France (in 1985), also reaching No. 6 in Switzerland, No. 12 in Italy (in 1985), No. 13 in Germany, No. 15 in Austria and No. 80 in the U.S. The same year, he released "Cold Dresses", which was also a big hit in France, reaching No. 5.
