1. The Driver (1978)

R | 91 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

A getaway driver becomes the latest assignment for a tenacious detective.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Ryan O'Neal, Bruce Dern, Isabelle Adjani, Ronee Blakley

Votes: 11,919 | Gross: $4.91M

A favorite of Quentin Tarantino, THE DRIVER was a box office dud and critical punching bag. But, Walter Hill's noir action film has heavily influenced everything from PULP FICTION to DRIVE. Ryan O'Neal, Bruce Dern, and Isabelle Adjani are cool as hell in this movie that literally gives us no names for the characters. If you haven't seen it, THE DRIVER is a cult classic that you should check out.

2. Drive (I) (2011)

R | 100 min | Crime, Drama

78 Metascore

A mysterious Hollywood stuntman and mechanic moonlights as a getaway driver and finds himself in trouble when he helps out his neighbor.

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks

Votes: 507,031 | Gross: $35.06M

Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 indie drama is a magnificent slow burning neo-noir. It may not be the action-packed movie fans of FAST AND FURIOUS were led to believe by the poster and trailer, but this is one of the best films of the last ten years. With a thumping soundtrack and great turns by Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman, and Bryan Cranston, DRIVE is the movie that should be first associated with Ryan Gosling's career.

3. The Transporter (2002)

PG-13 | 92 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

51 Metascore

Frank is hired to "transport" packages for unknown clients and has made a very good living doing so. But when asked to move a package that begins moving, complications arise.

Directors: Louis Leterrier, Corey Yuen | Stars: Jason Statham, Qi Shu, Matt Schulze, François Berléand

Votes: 264,100 | Gross: $25.30M

and all its sequels

Jason Statham is cool, no doubt about it. After his turns in Guy Ritchie's first few films, the bald Brit headlined this small film from Luc Besson that spawned two sequels, a television series, and now a prequel film. While Ed Skrein has a lot of cool himself, it will be hard to top Statham's opening drive in the first movie.

4. Heaven's Burning (1997)

R | 96 min | Action, Crime, Drama

After a botched bank job, a gang takes hostage a Japanese girl on the run from an arranged marriage, and escapes. Their wheel man saves the girl from them and the two go on the run with cops, the gang and her psycho husband on their tail.

Director: Craig Lahiff | Stars: Russell Crowe, Yûki Kudô, Kenji Isomura, Ray Barrett

Votes: 1,708

It follows the adventures of an Australian getaway driver (Russell Crowe) and a Japanese runaway bride (Youki Kudoh) on a road trip as they are pursued by both criminals and the police.

5. Baby Driver (2017)

R | 112 min | Action, Crime, Drama

86 Metascore

After being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.

Director: Edgar Wright | Stars: Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eiza González

Votes: 336,100 | Gross: $107.83M

6. Thunder Road (1958)

Approved | 92 min | Crime, Drama, Film-Noir

A veteran comes home from the Korean War to the mountains and takes over the family moonshining business. He has to battle big-city gangsters who are trying to take over the business and the police who are trying to put him in prison.

Director: Arthur Ripley | Stars: Robert Mitchum, Gene Barry, Jacques Aubuchon, Keely Smith

Votes: 2,712

In this classic 1958 noir set in the world of illegal mountain moonshiners, Robert Mitchum plays a young vet working as a transporter — one of “those wild and reckless men, who transport illegal whisky from its source to its point of distribution,” using souped-up cars. This wasn’t a fanciful movie creation; it was an actual subculture. The film may not have the authentic details of those classic car movies that would start to come out a decade or so later, but Mitchum is, and will always be, the coolest cat onscreen. Give him a hot rod, and he’s suddenly cooler.

7. The St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959)

A gang's plans for a St. Louis bank robbery are complicated when the sister of one of the thieves starts voicing her well-founded suspicions.

Directors: Charles Guggenheim, John Stix | Stars: Steve McQueen, Crahan Denton, David Clarke, James Dukas

Votes: 1,025

8. Heat (1995)

R | 170 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

76 Metascore

A group of professional bank robbers start to feel the heat from police when they unknowingly leave a clue at their latest heist.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, Jon Voight

Votes: 509,329 | Gross: $67.44M

Within the stellar cast of Michael Mann's epic crime saga is Dennis Haysbert as the getaway driver hired to join the crew. He may not be the flashiest name on this list but he is definitely skilled behind the wheel and contributes to Robert De Niro's team.

9. Beat the Devil (2002)

Not Rated | 9 min | Action, Short, Adventure

Decades ago, the legendary James Brown sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune. Now he wishes to renegotiate. Hired to take Mr. Brown to a rendezvous with the devil (Gary Oldman), ... See full summary »

Director: Tony Scott | Stars: Clive Owen, Gary Oldman, James Brown, Marilyn Manson

Votes: 5,459

While not a feature film, THE HIRE is a series of short films from filmmakers like John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro González Iñárritu, John Woo, Joe Carnahan, and Tony Scott. Starring Clive Owen as the nameless Driver, these films heavily influenced THE TRANSPORTER franchise. I would kill to see a full feature film version featuring Owen in the lead. I also defy you to find a better complete series of films out there.

10. Ronin (1998)

R | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

67 Metascore

A freelancing former U.S. Intelligence Agent tries to track down a mysterious package that is wanted by the Irish and the Russians.

Votes: 158,999 | Gross: $41.62M

11. Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000)

PG-13 | 118 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

35 Metascore

A retired master car thief must come back to the industry and steal fifty cars with his crew in one night to save his brother's life.

Director: Dominic Sena | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, T.J. Cross

Votes: 241,061 | Gross: $101.65M

Dominic Sena's remake came right during the heydey of Nicolas Cage's work with Jerry Bruckheimer. The film may not be all that great, but Cage's performance makes this incredibly enjoyable as he and his crew run rampant all over Long Beach. The chase scenes are great but it really is Cage as Randall Raines as he brings his masterful skills out of retirement that make him one of the best drivers on this list.

12. The Italian Job (2003)

PG-13 | 111 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

68 Metascore

After being betrayed and left for dead in Italy, Charlie Croker and his team plan an elaborate gold heist against their former ally.

Director: F. Gary Gray | Stars: Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron

Votes: 315,954 | Gross: $106.13M

One of two entries featuring Jason Statham on this list, the remake of THE ITALIAN JOB is the only film on this list that makes compact cars look badass. Everyone in America wanted a Mini Cooper after seeing this movie and with good reason. Handsome Rob is a cocky sonofabitch and one hell of a skilled motorist.

13. Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

R | 111 min | Action, Biography, Crime

81 Metascore

Bonnie Parker, a bored waitress falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks.

Director: Arthur Penn | Stars: Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Michael J. Pollard, Gene Hackman

Votes: 91,380

Arthur Penn's 1967 film is one of the best movies of all time. Controversial upon it's premiere due to the violence in the movie, BONNIE & CLYDE immortalizes the bank robbing duo while also introducing us to their crew, including driver C.W. Moss. Michael J. Pollard is great in his role as he becomes friends with the title characters and eventually contributes to their downfall.

14. The Getaway (1972)

PG | 123 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

55 Metascore

A recently released ex-con and his loyal wife go on the run after a heist goes awry.

Director: Sam Peckinpah | Stars: Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, Ben Johnson, Sally Struthers

Votes: 24,593 | Gross: $36.73M

Sam Peckinpah was a master of big screen violence. Steve McQueen is one of the coolest movie stars of all time. Combine the two with car chases and Ali McGraw and you get one of the best action movies ever. Stay away from the *beep* remake with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger and stick with the Walter Hill-scripted 1972 version.

15. Faster (2010)

R | 98 min | Action, Crime, Drama

44 Metascore

An ex-con gets on a series of apparently unrelated killings. He gets tracked by a veteran cop with secrets of his own and an egocentric hit man.

Director: John Hough | Stars: Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Roarke, Kenneth Tobey

Votes: 5,445

Peter Fonda and Adam Roarke play two 0-to-100 holdup artists/racers who rob a huge supermarket, only to get saddled with the NASCAR groupie (Susan George) whom Fonda’s character bedded the night before. Speeding away from the cops in, first, a souped-up 68 Chevy Impala, and then a garish Dodge Challenger, the trio bicker and banter relentlessly. Meanwhile, the pissy, frustrated lawman (Kenneth Tobey) trying to coordinate the manhunt has to deal with abject incompetence and mind-boggling bureaucracy, as well as his own desire to relive his youth. There isn’t a single sane person in this movie, but the tremendous stunts, crossed with the film’s surprisingly easygoing atmosphere, have made this a car classic.
