Votes: 88,114 | Gross: $13.01M

This movie is an allegory/satire for the era of the Reagan administration and rise of the "yuppie." Growing up under an oppressive alt-republican father made the understanding of this term semi-difficult, and of course it has an offensive connotation to it because it identifies a society of privileged people. Now, the idea of who is and who isn't privileged is relative to what economic class you identify with but what I think is different about yuppies is that they socially and economically control everyone else. What I mean by this is that the yuppies preach an illusion to the middle class that they too can be successful and privileged one day if they work hard enough. The middle class usually eats this up because it sounds just like religion where they are promised a ticket to some sort of paradise in the end so long as the work hard at achieving something. In reality, these yuppies are exploiting our capitalist economy but don't get too defensive about that idea because there are yuppies who exploit socialist and communist economies as well. It's human nature for people to exploit every opportunity they have for success but when it gets out of control, you have yuppies. So how do you deal with yuppies? - You get Roddy Piper!

The film subtly explores the different circumstances we face in dealing with oppressive forces. It shows us how corrupt law enforcement are the driving force behind a lot adversity we face and while not every police officer/soldier is corrupt, their actions and motives are still influenced directly by corrupt superiors/politicians. The film also shows us how there are oppressive forces surrounding us in the media which tell us exactly how to feel and lives our lives. We also see through an extensive fight sequence how difficult it is to motivate others around us to make changes rather than be complacent. John Carpenter goes as far in this film as to explain how control is usually maintained by employing quick action, something that republicans have an advantage of whereas Democrats usually like to wait and conceive the best possible plan to execute by which time it's too late. Of course, surveillance is another aspect of social control that is explored as well.

Votes: 17,940 | Gross: $3.92M

Despite this movie existing practically my entire life, I had never heard of it until I was 31. It's hugely underrated and brings in tons of talent. First off, the movie was written by Julie Brown who claims that it was green-lit immediately after pitching it to studio executives. That's something unheard of in Hollywood today. Brown was a comedian who was supposed to be a pop singer modeled after Madonna. She released several albums that I highly recommend as they are an awesome combination of politically incorrect dark humor with the style of Cyndi Lauper & 1980's Madonna. Brown even has a role in the movie as Genna Davis's friend/coworker and also gets her own music video in the movie with the song "'Cause I'm a blonde." The the two music video moments of the movie should come as no surprise as the director of the film is the legendary Julien Temple who's 80's and 90's music video resume is nothing to sneeze at.

Want more? The film features a pre-In Living Color Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans who play incompetent trouble-making aliens. There's a small but hilarious pool boy surfer role played by Michael McKean. Also, did I mention how HOT Geena Davis is in this movie?! In other words, there's a lot to love about this movie so check it out.

Director: Just Jaeckin | Stars: Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont

Votes: 2,114 | Gross: $1.34M

Don't be fooled by the artwork/covers for this film, it's poorly marketed as a softcore porn like Emmanuel. Yes, it's directed by Just Jaeckin, but it's a wonderful combination of sexpliotation and fantasy/adventure comedy.

Like Deadpool (2016), many of the film's jokes come from playing with genre tropes. Brent Huff plays the male "hero" of the film, Willard, who's personality and sense of humor are almost identical to Ryan Reynolds' character Deadpool. Perhaps Ryan Reynolds was inspired by this movie?

27. Tokyo! (2008)

Director: Charles Band | Stars: Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Michael Stefani, Art LaFleur

Votes: 4,443

I feel like this movie ends up being even funnier on another level because at first it seems like a silly rip-off of the original Terminator but both movies came out the same year. Instead of ripping off of anything, it seems like it actually influenced the movie Time Cop ten years later. Anyway, this a very fun sci-fi action that has an Army of Darkness feeling to it here and there. The first hour moves delightfully quick. I must not forget to mention the young and beautiful Helen Hunt.

30. Total Recall (1990)

R | 113 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Director: Paul Verhoeven | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Rachel Ticotin

Votes: 265,279 | Gross: $119.39M

Not particularly known for it's jokes however Arnold has a lot of really cheesy/funny one-liners letting the audience know that he's cool and confident despite his predicament. There are also some great "famous last words" from the two artificial intelligence charters in the film before the explode.

Director: Jim Wynorski | Stars: Dick Durock, Heather Locklear, Louis Jourdan, Sarah Douglas

Votes: 3,209 | Gross: $0.19M

Another movie that I watched so many times as a child that I had to wait 21 years before I could watch it again. I have to believe that the intentional campy humor and synth score in this movie helps establish my taste in film while growing up. The acting isn't the best but it suits the film very well. It's an early example of a superhero film done right as it blends surrealism, romance, action, humor, sci-fi, horror all in one movie. As an added bonus, the movie features Monique Gabrielle in a small but very sexy roll.

37. Beetlejuice (1988)

Director: Jim Wynorski | Stars: Traci Lords, Arthur Roberts, Lenny Juliano, Ace Mask

Votes: 1,792 | Gross: $0.11M

This movie has a lot of cute-funny moments. It's hard to truly appreciate without being a fan of Traci Lords and or Jim Wynorski. Before watching this movie, it's important to know that this is a Roger Corman production. For those of you who don't know, Roger Corman is responsible for giving lots of talented directors their start in Hollywood by offering them shoestring budget movies. His policy was always that if they could complete a film for him on a very low budget, they would have the chance to move on to bigger and better projects. Wynorski must have enjoyed working for Corman like this because he had already completed two movies for him prior to this project.

Votes: 1,179

This one is a cheesy and bizarre delight. Dark humor, anti-humor, and absurd humor can be found throughout this film. For me, the issue with this movie isn't the semi-incoherent story line, but is its slow pacing.
