1. The West Wing (1999–2006)

TV-14 | 44 min | Drama

Inside the lives of staffers in the West Wing of the White House.

Stars: Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Allison Janney, John Spencer

Votes: 53,616

The best political drama series there is. Cleverly written, likable characters and the 'Walk & Talk' is unrivaled. Less sensationalized than House of Cards, but a must-watch if you're even slightly into (American) politics.

8.9/10 if you're into political drama.

2. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 53 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

By day, mild-mannered Dexter is a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But at night, he is a serial killer who only targets other murderers.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 578,660

Very enjoyable series with a unique premise that might be a little hard to get into. The quality goes downhill after season 4, be warned.

7.5/10 if you don't watch past season 4.

3. Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)

TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.

Stars: Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, James Callis

Votes: 137,011

Incredible, engaging series that's must-watch for any science-fiction fan. Some of the effects haven't aged very well, so be prepared for the occasional cheesy scene. Everything else makes more than up for it. Do yourself a favor and try this one.

9.2/10 if you can handle the cheese.

4. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

TV-MA | 49 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

A high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine in order to secure his family's future.

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt

Votes: 1,124,574

Don't miss out on this excellently written, tense, emotional drama. The story builds slowly, but there's not a single bad episode in this entire show. Push through if you can't seem to get into it after the first few episodes, you won't regret it.

5. Better Call Saul (2015– )

TV-MA | 46 min | Crime, Drama

The trials and tribulations of criminal lawyer, Jimmy McGill, in the time leading up to establishing his strip-mall law office in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Stars: Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian

Votes: 231,128

The first season shows a very strong spin-off from the Breaking Bad series featuring the backstory to Saul Goodman. I recommend watching it after you've finished Breaking Bad.

6. New Girl (2011–2018)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

After a bad break-up, Jess, an offbeat young woman, moves into an apartment loft with three single men. Although they find her behavior very unusual, the men support her - most of the time.

Stars: Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone

Votes: 165,556

New Girl is a light comedy series to watch inbetween the heavy hitters. Has a strong supporting cast. Not recommended if you're not a fan of Zooey Deschanel's typical quirky-girl roles.

7. Californication (2007–2014)

TV-MA | 28 min | Comedy, Drama

A writer tries to juggle his career, his relationship with his daughter and his ex-girlfriend, as well as his appetite for beautiful women.

Stars: David Duchovny, Natascha McElhone, Evan Handler, Pamela Adlon

Votes: 160,132

It's hard to look away from Hank Moody blundering his way through life and the streets of LA. Great supporting cast, strangely relatable main character, and incredible acting throughout. Try it if you're into dark humor.

8. The Office (2005–2013)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

A mockumentary on a group of typical office workers, where the workday consists of ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and tedium.

Stars: Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson

Votes: 267,411

Don't look any further if you're into dry, sarcastic, often visual cringe humor. Interesting characters portrayed by a talented cast with Steve Carell as lead. Quality has its ups and downs throughout the seasons, but this show is enjoyable the whole way.

8.2/10 if you can stand cringe-humor.

9. Entourage (2004–2011)

TV-MA | 28 min | Comedy, Drama

Film star Vince Chase navigates the vapid terrain of Los Angeles with a close circle of friends and his trusty agent.

Stars: Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara

Votes: 148,847

A look into the life of an up-and-coming movie star and his friends. Interesting characters with a surprisingly weak lead in Adrien Grenier. Every scene with Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) in it is worth its weight in gold, and there's plenty of good-looking people to look at inbetween. Worth a watch if that doesn't sound half-bad.

10. Parks and Recreation (2009–2015)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

The absurd antics of an Indiana town's public officials as they pursue sundry projects to make their city a better place.

Stars: Amy Poehler, Jim O'Heir, Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt

Votes: 163,385

Incredibly comedy series clearly influenced by the humor from The Office. I'd say Parcs and Rec surpasses The Office in constant episode quality and the likability of its characters. Comes highly recommended.

11. House of Cards (2013–2018)

TV-MA | 51 min | Drama

A Congressman works with his equally conniving wife to exact revenge on the people who betrayed him.

Stars: Kevin Spacey, Michel Gill, Robin Wright, Kate Mara

Votes: 410,376

There's not a series more relevant after the 2016 presidential elections in the USA. Smartly written, tense throughout and leaves you wanting more after each episode. If your faith in politics is low, you'll have lost it all by the end of this show. Watch this even if you're not particularly into politics.

12. Hart of Dixie (2011–2015)

TV-PG | 60 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

New Yorker and new doctor Zoe Hart accepts an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work in his medical practice in Bluebell, Alabama. She arrives to find he has died and left half the practice to her in his will.

Stars: Rachel Bilson, Jaime King, Cress Williams, Wilson Bethel

Votes: 39,737

This show definitely isn't for everyone. It's a feelgood drama series set in a small town in Alabama. Diverse cast of characters of which the lead (Rachel Bilson as Zoe Hart) under-performs at times. Watch this if you like sappy romance, love triangles, a small-town setting and country music. Otherwise, don't even try.

8.0/10 if you meet the criteria. 6.5/10 otherwise.

13. Mad Men (2007–2015)

TV-14 | 47 min | Drama

A drama about one of New York's most prestigious ad agencies at the beginning of the 1960s, focusing on one of the firm's most mysterious but extremely talented ad executives, Donald Draper.

Stars: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones

Votes: 171,878

Slow drama about the advertising world in the 60's. Starts up slowly, progresses slowly, and comes to a standstill at times. The slow pace does however lend itself to excellent worldbuilding, atmosphere and stellar acting performances. Watch this even if you don't make it all the way through.

8.5/10 if you can stand the pace.

14. Nashville (2012–2018)

TV-PG | 43 min | Drama, Music, Romance

Follows the lives and tragedies of rising and fading country music stars in Nashville, Tennessee.

Stars: Hayden Panettiere, Clare Bowen, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson

Votes: 21,276

It's very hard to recommend this show to anyone who doesn't belong to the target audience. It's worth it if you're looking for a feelgood series, romance and drama. If, on top of that, you also love country music, it becomes an absolute must-watch. Don't watch this if you hate country music. I mean it.

7.8/10 if you meet the criteria. 6.0/10 otherwise.

15. How I Met Your Mother (2005–2014)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy, Romance

A father recounts to his children, through a series of flashbacks, the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him meeting their mother.

Stars: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris

Votes: 520,089

The ultimate show to binge for weeks on end. Leads you on forever and drags its feet to leave you with a less-than-stellar ending. Watch this if you need a light filler show.

16. Homeland (2011– )

TV-MA | 55 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

A bipolar CIA operative becomes convinced a prisoner of war has been turned by al-Qaeda and is planning to carry out a terrorist attack on American soil.

Stars: Claire Danes, Mandy Patinkin, Damian Lewis, Rupert Friend

Votes: 270,339

Great action drama with a great cast that should've ended after season 4. Tense throughout. Watch the first four seasons, then decide if you can be bothered with the rest.

17. The Wire (2002–2008)

TV-MA | 59 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Baltimore drug scene, seen through the eyes of drug dealers and law enforcement.

Stars: Dominic West, Lance Reddick, Sonja Sohn, Wendell Pierce

Votes: 232,430

Took me two tries to finally 'get' this series. Push through, because this gritty, realistic, well-acted masterpiece is worth it from beginning to end. Arguably one of the best series ever produced.

18. Utopia (2013–2014)

TV-MA | 50 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

After a group of people, who meet online, discover a bizarre graphic novel which seems to hold mysterious answers, they find themselves being tracked down by a merciless organization known merely as 'The Network'.

Stars: Adeel Akhtar, Paul Higgins, Neil Maskell, Fiona O'Shaughnessy

Votes: 33,921

Very strange drama/thriller series with a unique style. Brutal, eery, disgusting yet beautiful at the same time. Try this one for me.

19. The IT Crowd (2006–2013)

TV-14 | 25 min | Comedy

The comedic misadventures of Roy, Moss and their grifting supervisor Jen, a rag-tag team of IT support workers at a large corporation headed by a hotheaded yuppie.

Stars: Chris O'Dowd, Richard Ayoade, Katherine Parkinson, Matt Berry

Votes: 112,208

Your one-stop-shop for all IT inside jokes, stereotypes and truths. Infinitely better than pretend-geeky shows like The Big Bang Theory. Dry, British humor at its finest.

20. Firefly (2002–2003)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin

Votes: 217,822

I didn't think I'd ever love a science-fiction series as much or even more than Battlestar Galactica, but Firefly is special. The only fault with this series is its tragically short runtime of one season before it was cancelled. Don't forget to watch the movie Serenity for a decent ending.

21. Scrubs (2001–2010)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy, Drama

In the unreal world of Sacred Heart Hospital, intern John "J.D." Dorian learns the ways of medicine, friendship, and life.

Stars: Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley

Votes: 218,513

Enjoyable comedy-drama that won't fail to entertain you throughout its runtime. Later seasons might not be to everyone's taste with a change of cast.

22. Silicon Valley (2014– )

TV-MA | 28 min | Comedy

Follows the struggle of Richard Hendricks, a Silicon Valley engineer trying to build his own company called Pied Piper.

Stars: Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller, Josh Brener, Martin Starr

Votes: 96,794

Enjoyable comedy-drama series that grabs every chance it gets to entertain you with great character interactions and nerdy humor.

23. The Newsroom (2012–2014)

TV-MA | 55 min | Drama

A newsroom undergoes some changes in its workings and morals as a new team is brought in, bringing unexpected results for its existing news anchor.

Stars: Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill

Votes: 92,960

Sharply written series partly focusing on current events, usually underlined with a message for the viewer. It sometimes overplays the 'busy newsroom' trope, but it's too minor a fault to cast this one aside.

24. Deadwood (2004–2006)

TV-MA | 55 min | Crime, Drama, History

A show set in the late 1800s, revolving around the characters of Deadwood, South Dakota; a town of deep corruption and crime.

Stars: Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif

Votes: 78,461

Stunning series with an original setting, great cast and engaging story. Can get quite gritty. The ending is disappointing at best. Watch this anyway.

25. Westworld (2016– )

TV-MA | 62 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past, explore a world in which every human appetite can be indulged without consequence.

Stars: Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton

Votes: 309,551

A unique series depicting a scenario that no ethicist would dare touch. Has the distinct HBO-vibe, but never fails to amaze when it comes to acting, writing and visuals. Expect to have your mind blown while watching this.

26. Stranger Things (2016– )

TV-14 | 51 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying forces in order to get him back.

Stars: Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Winona Ryder, David Harbour

Votes: 522,112

This entire series feels like a long 80's sci-fi movie. More enjoyable if you get the references of that era. The writing quality fluctuates, but the child actors are bearable and the whole thing keeps you on your toes throughout.

27. Rick and Morty (2013– )

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

An animated series that follows the exploits of a super scientist and his not-so-bright grandson.

Stars: Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, Sarah Chalke

Votes: 234,236

Unique, enjoyable, mature animated series with a great art style that takes you on ridiculous journeys. Short episodes, great filler, try it.

28. Friends (1994–2004)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy, Romance

Follows the personal and professional lives of six twenty to thirty-something-year-old friends living in Manhattan.

Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc

Votes: 619,933

If you haven't seen this by now, you're in luck. This show has so much heart and an unwavering quality about it. May not be the show to really sit down for and do a watching session, but you can't do any better for dinner or evening entertainment.

29. Go On (2012–2013)

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

An irreverent sportscaster, pressured by his boss to join a support group because he can't move forward after the death of his wife, finds connection with the extremely varied members.

Stars: Matthew Perry, Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura

Votes: 18,953

It's ok. Apparently nobody got excited enough about this for a second season, which isn't entirely unreasonable.

30. Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014)

TV-MA | 55 min | Crime, Drama, History

An Atlantic City, New Jersey politician plays both sides of the law, conspiring with gangsters during the Prohibition era.

Stars: Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham

Votes: 154,836

One of the only recent series set during the prohibition era. Gritty, beautiful and builds a believable world from the ground up. Acting and visuals are top-notch. Watch this.

31. True Detective (2014– )

TV-MA | 55 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Seasonal anthology series in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law.

Stars: Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch

Votes: 411,532

Both seasons feature a different cast and comprise of different stories we'll no doubt see collide later. Both seasons feature unique stories with frequent flashbacks, which leaves you guessing often, yet never fails to provide answers in the end. Quality throughout.

32. Fargo (2014– )

TV-MA | 53 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

Various chronicles of deception, intrigue and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. Yet all of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota.

Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks

Votes: 252,360

Fargo is an excellent drama-thriller featuring two seasons full of bad choices by otherwise decent people. Never fails to provide suspense, and the situations are always just crazy enough to believe. A solid recommendation.

TV-PG | 22 min | Comedy

A suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eclectic staff and student body.

Stars: Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase

Votes: 168,352

Very enjoyable series full of quirky characters in an original setting, which sets the stage for incredibly diverse story lines throughout the seasons. Very memorable, fun and worthy of a watch.

34. Gilmore Girls (2000–2007)

TV-PG | 44 min | Comedy, Drama

A dramedy centering around the relationship between a thirtysomething single mother and her teen daughter living in Stars Hollow, Connecticut.

Stars: Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Keiko Agena, Scott Patterson

Votes: 83,114

Feelgood comedy-drama which probably isn't for everybody. The dialogue is witty, the characters are fun and the setting is as wholesome as it gets. An excellent show for the cold winter nights.
