1. Lilya 4-Ever (2002)

R | 109 min | Crime, Drama

82 Metascore

Sixteen-year-old Lilja and her only friend, the young boy Volodja, live in Estonia, fantasizing about a better life. One day, Lilja falls in love with Andrej, who is going to Sweden, and invites Lilja to come along and start a new life.

Director: Lukas Moodysson | Stars: Oksana Akinshina, Artyom Bogucharskiy, Pavel Ponomaryov, Lyubov Agapova

Votes: 38,971 | Gross: $0.18M

Lukas Moodyson really lives up to his name by creating one of the saddest and most grim films I have seen. However, this does not stop me from enjoying the film- Moodyson brings to life the struggles faced by a young girl as she tries to break free of poverty with tact and grace, as well as with a documentary-esque style of filming that makes the material really hit close to home.

2. This Is England (2006)

Not Rated | 101 min | Crime, Drama

86 Metascore

A young boy becomes friends with a gang of skinheads. Friends soon become like family, and relationships will be pushed to the very limit.

Director: Shane Meadows | Stars: Thomas Turgoose, Stephen Graham, Jo Hartley, Andrew Shim

Votes: 107,792 | Gross: $0.33M

A bleak look at racism and working-class life in the 1980's, this amazing film works on a variety of levels. The choice of the protagonist being a young boy adds an extra sadness to the events of the movie- showing how it's easy for children to become involved in crimes and violence from a simple need for friends and a way to spend time without money.

3. Filth (I) (2013)

R | 97 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

56 Metascore

A corrupt, junkie cop with bipolar disorder attempts to manipulate his way through a promotion in order to win back his wife and daughter while also fighting his own inner demons.

Director: Jon S. Baird | Stars: James McAvoy, Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan, Imogen Poots

Votes: 89,946 | Gross: $0.03M

I came into this expecting something that would make me mad at the reality of corruption and the misery it causes people all over the world. However, what I got was a look into the troubled existence of a man as he wastes away, using a facade of apathy and hedonism to cover up the lonely reality of his life. It's funny as well as sad, however, and the acting by everyone, especially James McAvoy, is tremendously good.

4. Good Bye Lenin! (2003)

R | 121 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

68 Metascore

In 1990, to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long coma, a young man must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared.

Director: Wolfgang Becker | Stars: Daniel Brühl, Katrin Saß, Chulpan Khamatova, Florian Lukas

Votes: 126,368 | Gross: $4.06M

I found this film at a local second-hand DVD store and, after watching it, wished that I had spent more than a meagre 2 pounds. Strangely underrated in the midst of high-budget foreign-language melodramas, this film shows the effects of a country trying to come to terms with it's changed political landscape shown through the life of a young man who attempts to bring back a little taste of communism to his ailing mother. It's so heartfelt and interesting to watch that I wish it was more popular.

5. To Be or Not to Be (1983)

PG | 107 min | Comedy

61 Metascore

At the onset of WW2, a Polish actor's family and the Polish Resistance help the troupe of a theatre escape Poland and the invading Nazis.

Director: Alan Johnson | Stars: Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft, Ronny Graham, Estelle Reiner

Votes: 9,177 | Gross: $13.00M

Not all of the movies on this list are sad! Mel Brooks is truly an amazing director. I love each and every one of his films for their humor and subtle social commentaries- but this is the one that stuck out the most. A loving parody of the 1943 classic, it touches on a somewhat dark subject matter (WW2) with lots of 80's camp and hammy acting- not to mention a geniunely thrilling plot.

Directors: Timur Bekmambetov, Yaroslav Chevazhevskiy, Ignas Jonynas, Dmitriy Kiselev, Aleksandr Voytinskiy | Stars: Dmitry Medvedev, Alina Bulynko, Sergey Pokhodaev, Ivan Urgant

Votes: 2,443

I usually hate romantic comedies with a fierce, burning passion, but for some reason I enjoyed this one so much that it's in this list! It's such a silly, over-the-top 'feel-good' setup but for once, this sort of thing works in the movie's favour. The characters, though too many to be very developed past a small few specific personality traits, are sympathetic and I found myself feeling empathy for their struggles in spades. All in all, it's a great movie for when you want to happy-cry in the holiday season.

11. Son of Rambow (2007)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

Director: Garth Jennings | Stars: Bill Milner, Will Poulter, Jessica Hynes, Anna Wing

Votes: 29,093 | Gross: $1.78M

12. 12 (2007)

PG-13 | 159 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

72 Metascore

Twelve jurors must decide the fate of a Chechen adolescent charged with murdering his stepfather.

Director: Nikita Mikhalkov | Stars: Sergey Makovetskiy, Sergey Garmash, Apti Magamaev, Nikita Mikhalkov

Votes: 12,822 | Gross: $0.13M

I hadn't seen any of the director's previous works and nor did I even really know who he was, aside from seeing him play a mob boss in Zhmurki. However, the enjoyment I gained from this movie is enough to make me speed through every film he's ever directed in the same night (with no breaks!). Any movie that can capture my attention and keep me this enthralled for more than 2 hours deserves an award- and so I'll give '12' a gold star and a pat on the back. Some elements are a little off-beat, or perhaps too overly 'trying to be deep'- (like the ongoing symbolism of the sparrow, for example), so this may not be everyone's cup of tea. I found this movie both parts hilarious (that puke scene had me clutching my sides, begging for mercy) and touching.
