Famous Faces in "The Hustler & The Color of Money"!by gattonero975 | created - 04 May 2016 | updated - 04 May 2016 | Public
This story deals with pool shark "Fast" Eddie Felson (Newman) who hustles in billiard rooms cross-country, taking on "suckers" whom he allows to win until the stakes get high enough, then he clamps down with brilliant shots, makes a bundle, and disappears.
With his manager-crony Charlie (McCormick), Eddie comes to New York to challenge the champion poolplayer of the fifty states, Minnesota Fats (Gleason) For many hours the two battle it out and Eddie is the winner all the way but overconfidence and too much drinking bring him down low. He winds up beaten and financially drained.
Later, at a all-nite restaurant, he meets up with a crippled girl, Sarah (Laurie), who is a disillusioned, life-weary alcoholic. Eddie moves in with Sarah and drifts around town hustling in third-rate pool places. One night he picks the wrong man and the loser's friends corner him and break his thumbs! He is comforted by Sarah and a mutual feelings dawn between them, though her feelings are deeper than his.
After he has recovered, Eddie gets involved with Bert Gordon (Scott) a ruthless gambler who arranges topnotch matches for Eddie for a 70% cut! Eddie, Bert and Sarah go to Kentucky, where he challenges and defeats a millionaire billiard addict, Findlay (Hamilton).
Sarah has been mentally deteriorating at a rapid rate due to her drinking and Bert , who wishes to dominate Eddie completely, undermines her to the point of no return and suicide seems the only way out for her. Her death sobers the glumly self-centered Eddie, who now realizes that his last chance for a meaningful relationship with another human being has gone.
He returns to New York and soundly beats Minnesota Fats in a disciplined and brilliantly executed rematch, then refuses to cut Bert into the take, denounces his cupidity and gross inhumanity and walks away. Life may not really improve for Eddie henceforth, but spiritually he has learned and grown and for 25 years he has been at a so-called peace but he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned" so he then forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young exceptional pool hustler who reminds Eddie of himself 25 years ago. Will history repeat itself? Will Eddie now be "Bert" to Vince's "Eddie"?
