This list is of my favorite movies. I like a lot of movies, but I'll try to keep this list at a reasonable length. This list is ranked by release date, not in order that I like them. This list will probably be changing quite often as I add movies over time.

PG | 161 min | Adventure, Drama, War

88 Metascore

British POWs are forced to build a railway bridge across the river Kwai for their Japanese captors in occupied Burma, not knowing that the allied forces are planning a daring commando raid through the jungle to destroy it.

Director: David Lean | Stars: William Holden, Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, Sessue Hayakawa

Votes: 234,532 | Gross: $44.91M

A great movie about British POW's during WW2 being forced to build a bridge by their Japanese captors. Alec Guiness is at his best as the commandant of the British prisoners. He comes to believe, almost obsessively, that it is his duty to build the best bridge possible, despite being prisoners of war. One of my favorite war films.

2. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Approved | 218 min | Adventure, Biography, Drama

100 Metascore

The story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.

Director: David Lean | Stars: Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins

Votes: 316,009 | Gross: $44.82M

One of the most epic films ever made. The story of an exceptional British officer as he leads the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during WW1. Peter O'Toole is great as Lawrence. The Cinematography in this film is some of the best you'll see.

3. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

PG | 95 min | Comedy, War

97 Metascore

An unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn

Votes: 520,869 | Gross: $0.28M

Possibly my favorite comedy movie. I'm a big history buff, and understanding the Cold War mentality goes a long way to making this movie even more enjoyable. Peter Sellers plays 3 roles, all to near perfection. George C. Scott equals him with a great performance as well. The final 10 minutes are pure gold.

4. Goldfinger (1964)

PG | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

87 Metascore

While investigating a gold magnate's smuggling, James Bond uncovers a plot to contaminate the Fort Knox gold reserve.

Director: Guy Hamilton | Stars: Sean Connery, Gert Fröbe, Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton

Votes: 203,508 | Gross: $51.08M

Goldfinger is my personal favorite of the James Bond series. Bond is one of my favorite movie series, and Goldfinger represents everything that is great about it. Action, humor, and over the top villains. This movie is just great entertainment.

5. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Approved | 178 min | Adventure, Western

90 Metascore

A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè

Votes: 815,170 | Gross: $6.10M

My favorite Western, this is an absolutely epic film. I also consider it Clint Eastwood's best. Eli Wallach is great as Tuco (The Ugly). The final 20 or so minutes in the cemetery is another one of my favorite scene's in all of film. Film making at it's finest.

6. Halloween (1978)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

90 Metascore

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes

Votes: 308,217 | Gross: $47.00M

I'm solidly in the opinion that Halloween is one of the two best horror films ever made. Its endless sequels and knockoffs have tainted what was so great about this movie, and it's unfortunate that many now see this movie only as another slasher movie, when it is so much more. This movie has one of my favorite endings of any film.

7. Alien (1979)

R | 117 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

89 Metascore

The crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright

Votes: 955,048 | Gross: $78.90M

The other of my favorite horror films. Suspenseful and claustrophobic, I personally consider it superior to its also highly regarded sequel Aliens, which is more of an action movie.(I like it too though) The final couple of minutes, while the ship is counting down and Ripley is running through the halls trying to avoid the Alien, is one of my favorite scenes in any film.

8. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

PG | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

82 Metascore

After the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.

Director: Irvin Kershner | Stars: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams

Votes: 1,386,487 | Gross: $290.48M

While a big fan of the entire series, this is the best of all the Star Wars films. The movie that introduced to the now famous Imperial March, Darth Vader is at his best in this film. The duel near the end is my favorite of the series. Humor and adventure are available in droves in this movie.

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

PG | 115 min | Action, Adventure

86 Metascore

In 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, John Rhys-Davies

Votes: 1,042,031 | Gross: $248.16M

One of the most purely enjoyable action movies out there. There is little this movie doesn't have. Indiana Jones is another one of my favorite movie series, but this is the best of them.

10. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

R | 118 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

86 Metascore

A young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.

Director: Jonathan Demme | Stars: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine

Votes: 1,556,028 | Gross: $130.74M

A great thriller. Anthony Hopkins is well known for his excellent portrayal as the psychopathic, and brilliant, serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Ted Levine is also great as a disturbed killer, so is Jodie Foster as the FBI trainee who enlists Lecter's help.

11. Schindler's List (1993)

R | 195 min | Biography, Drama, History

95 Metascore

In German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Caroline Goodall

Votes: 1,457,917 | Gross: $96.90M

A brilliant film. Steven Spielberg's best, and that's saying something. This is a heavy film, one of the most heart aching ever made. It is absolutely phenomenal, I can think of few other words to describe this movie. Not for the faint hearted, but I still recommend everyone watch this film at least once. An excellent showpiece for both the best and worst of humanity.

12. Jurassic Park (1993)

PG-13 | 127 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

A pragmatic paleontologist touring an almost complete theme park on an island in Central America is tasked with protecting a couple of kids after a power failure causes the park's cloned dinosaurs to run loose.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough

Votes: 1,072,159 | Gross: $402.45M

I must really like Spielberg. Jurassic Park is one of the best adventure movies there is. Fun and exciting, it also deals with some heavier issues such as how much can man control, or try too?

13. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

R | 169 min | Drama, War

91 Metascore

Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns

Votes: 1,503,722 | Gross: $216.54M

Another great Spielberg, and war movie. In one of the most realistic war scenes ever, anyone who watches the first 15 minutes of this movie will have a whole new level of respect to those soldiers who landed at Normandy on D-Day. The main story is that Tom Hanks is to lead a squad of soldiers to find the last of 4 brothers, all the others having been killed, so at least his parents will still have one son. The main dilemma being is it worth risking Hanks and his men to save one soldier (who is the titular Private Ryan)?

14. Gladiator (2000)

R | 155 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

67 Metascore

A former Roman General sets out to exact vengeance against the corrupt emperor who murdered his family and sent him into slavery.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed

Votes: 1,627,924 | Gross: $187.71M

An epic story of betrayal and power in ancient Rome. Russell Crowe is great as Maximus, the betrayed Roman General who has to fight as a gladiator. All the while trying to find a way to get revenge on the new Emperor Commodus, who killed his friend and mentor Marcus Aurelius. This movie also has one of my favorite soundtracks.

15. There Will Be Blood (2007)

R | 158 min | Drama

93 Metascore

A story of family, religion, hatred, oil and madness, focusing on a turn-of-the-century prospector in the early days of the business.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciarán Hinds, Martin Stringer

Votes: 644,460 | Gross: $40.22M

An excellently made movie about the cost of greed. While there is much done well in this movie, including good acting by all, it is Daniel Day Lewis who gets this movie on this list. I can scarcely think of a performance I enjoy more, he is absolutely great here.

16. The Dark Knight (2008)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine

Votes: 2,884,630 | Gross: $534.86M

Generally not a big superhero fan, I was nevertheless a big fan of Nolan's Batman trilogy. The Dark Knight is the best of those films. From great action to it's philosophical duel between the Batman and The Joker, there is little not done brilliantly in this movie. I have to mention Heath Ledger as The Joker, no matter how many times people have already said it, he was phenomenal in this movie. Another absolutely great ending.
