Votes: 151,552 | Gross: $71.63M

4K digital projection, UA La Cañada 8, La Cañada, CA

Like Insidious a couple years back, Mama starts out as a straight-forward haunted house movie, then rides off the rails into a sort of "magic realism", here crossed with Gothic romance. Not so much scary, but genuinely sad at points. It doesn't all work, but there's enough experimentation & fresh ideas to ensure the Muschietti siblings are a dynamic director/producer duo to watch.

Votes: 201,233 | Gross: $66.38M

4K digital projection, UA La Cañada 8, La Cañada, CA

Very cute movie. Reminds me of Safety Not Guaranteed in that it's a straight-ahead cute meet story couched in genre conventions, rather than an all-out genre film with romantic elements. Which is just fine - the leads are cute, Rob Corddry is hilarious & the overall feel is warm (no pun intended).

10. House of Cards (2013– )

Kevin Spacey's as charming as the devil, and just as dangerous. Hope to finish this soon.

Votes: 475,882 | Gross: $66.49M

Rewatch with the Mrs. Still solid, but not as mind-blowing as first go-round.

14. Fringe (2008–2013)

TV-14 | 46 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

An F.B.I. agent is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist and his son in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

Stars: Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole

Votes: 197,483

Season 4

Honestly, they should have ended Fringe with the poignant, clean break that closed out Season 3. While there were some good ideas & fun moments this season (porcupine people!), I found myself frequently infuriated by this cuckoo bananas season that seemed to change the rules & villains at every turn. But since Season 5 is an abbreviated season, I may as well finish it off when it hits Blu-Ray in May.

15. Bad Education (2004)

Director: Richard Linklater | Stars: Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, Matthew McConaughey, Brady Coleman

Votes: 51,664 | Gross: $9.20M

Strange, charming story. Thanks to Jon - or perhaps I should say Jon's "Republican cinephile" parents - for the recommendation!

17. The Untouchables (1987)

R | 119 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

79 Metascore

Federal Agent Eliot Ness sets out to stop Al Capone; because of rampant corruption, he assembles a small, hand-picked team.

Director: Brian De Palma | Stars: Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, Robert De Niro, Charles Martin Smith

Votes: 240,983 | Gross: $76.27M

Careens wildly between earnest performance from Kevin Costner & excessive theatricality from De Palma & everyone else. Not unlike bootleg hooch, it had its fun moments but by the end I was a little sick & the morning after I remember very little.

18. Mandingo (1975)

R | 127 min | Drama, History, Romance

A slave owner in the 1840s trains one of his slaves to be a bare-knuckle fighter.

Director: Richard Fleischer | Stars: James Mason, Susan George, Perry King, Richard Ward

Votes: 2,806

Turgid antebellum drama with a spotty legacy. Based on a blockbuster novel, the film proved to be a hit, but was almost immediately buried afterward for its frank (& unfortunately, historically accurate) depictions of abuse in the daily running of a slave-breeding plantation. If anything, the film is too plain; while the slice of life is despicable by any sense of modern decency or morality, the actual story of a dysfunctional husband & wife who take on not-so-secret slave lovers because they can't trust each other is dry & wooden. Some would say that sparks a wildfire of awkward camp, I find it more interesting to discuss than to watch. Though it'd make a hell of a counterpoint screened alongside GONE WITH THE WIND.

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

I wanted to like this, but I'm going to be honest. I don't know what the hell is going on here & don't care enough to find out.

G | 80 min | Documentary

A documentary on insect life in meadows and ponds.

Directors: Claude Nuridsany, Marie Pérennou | Stars: Kristin Scott Thomas, Jacques Perrin

Votes: 9,885 | Gross: $1.57M

One of Zoë's favorites (she calls it "The Insect Show"). It's obvious why. The photography is exquisite, and the documentarians let the creatures (& some well placed score) do all the talking.

25. Hatchet (2006)

57 Metascore

When a group of tourists in a New Orleans haunted swamp tour, find themselves stranded in the wilderness, their evening of fun and spooks turns into a horrific nightmare.

Votes: 432,375 | Gross: $228.78M

4K digital projection, UA La Cañada 8, La Cañada, CA

My favorite part was when Captain Kirk flew the Millennium Falcon to fight the Shredder Clan and rescue the Universal Soldier. All kidding aside, I'm a fan of both Abrams' Trek films, and if you had even a passing interest in the first one you'd be pleased with the follow-up.

27. Nurse Maid (1932)

Animation, Short

Add a Plot

Director: Ub Iwerks

Votes: 46

Wow. Cartoons from the 30s trafficked in all kinds of nutty stereotypes.

Director: Adam Green | Stars: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Tony Todd, Parry Shen

Votes: 10,549 | Gross: $0.06M

Adam Green is such a good dude, and FROZEN is such a good film. It pains me that his most famous films are so "meh". I'll give SPIRAL & CHILLERAMA a shot, but probably skip HATCHET III.

29. The Valley of Gwangi (1969)

Dumb as a post, but MUCH funnier.

69 Metascore

A man awakens from a coma to discover he has a psychic ability.

Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Herbert Lom

Votes: 50,918 | Gross: $20.77M

Has anybody read The Dead Zone? (Eric?)

Suspenseful climax, visions well-executed, cast's fantastic (particularly Walken, both Average Joe & freak show), but some of earlier story threads don't quite tie together in a "this probably works well in a novel" way.
