Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Alex Palmer

Votes: 330,579 | Gross: $45.06M

INFECTED. The first film to actually be noticed for deviating off of the "zombie" trend. 28 Days Later is a British film starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris and Christopher Eccleston that deals with the aftermath of the "rage" virus and a group of survivors journey to find "the answer to infection".

2. 28 Weeks Later (2007)

R | 100 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi

78 Metascore

Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo | Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle, Harold Perrineau

Votes: 232,259 | Gross: $28.64M

INFECTED. The sequel to 28 Days Later. Starring Mackintosh Muggleton, Imogen Poots, Robert Caryle, Rose Byrne and Jeremy Renner. 28 Weeks features none of the original cast and has a much more big-budget action feel than the original. 28 Weeks Later takes place over half a year after the events of the first and deals with young Andy who returns to Britain with his sister. However, due to their actions, the rage virus returns and they must run and fight both the infected and military to survive.

3. Zombieland (2009)

R | 88 min | Adventure, Comedy, Horror

73 Metascore

Director: Ruben Fleischer | Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin

Votes: 433,386 | Gross: $75.59M

INFECTED. Perhaps the best zomb-com yet, even if they are simply "mad-cow turned mad-human" zombies. Zombieland stars famous actors Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenburg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and featuring Bill Murray as they travel across America in various vans labeled "3" in search of Pacific Playland and Twinkies.

4. Pathogen (II) (2006)

Director: Emily Hagins | Stars: Rose Kent-McGlew, Alec Herskowitz, Tiger Darrow, Tony Vespe

Votes: 167

ZOMBIE. Unique in that the zombies are created by nano-robotics rather than an actual virus. Pathogen was directed by a 12-year-old Emily Hagins. The movie is surprisingly better then half of the Asylum flicks out there, despite being made on a budget of just under $1000. Pathogen follows Dannie, a fourteen year old girl who has been having strange recurring dreams. As she struggles to discover their meaning, the world around her becomes empty as people fall ill to a mysterious "pathogen". Soon, the dead begin to rise and people begin dying. But there is hope, if she can remember her dream.

5. La horde (2009)

Not Rated | 90 min | Action, Horror

An end of the world battle between gangsters, cops and zombies.

Directors: Yannick Dahan, Benjamin Rocher | Stars: Claude Perron, Jean-Pierre Martins, Eriq Ebouaney, Aurélien Recoing

Votes: 14,086

ZOMBIE (fast). Though, I'm not a fan of "fast-moving undead". The Horde is a very good movie. Putting aside the fact that it's low-budget and almost anybody with talent could make this film. The Horde uses what it has to it's advantage, by building on the claustrophobia of it's environment and having quality actors. The story follows a bunch of cops that have gone rogue from their unit and infiltrate a condemned apartment building to get revenge on a gang and save one of their own. But of course, things go wrong... horribly. A warning, the film is french.

6. Pontypool (2008)

Not Rated | 93 min | Fantasy, Horror, Thriller

54 Metascore

A radio host interprets the possible outbreak of a deadly virus which infects the small Ontario town he is stationed in.

Director: Bruce McDonald | Stars: Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly, Hrant Alianak

Votes: 25,390 | Gross: $0.00M

INFECTED. I haven't watched this movie in a while. But it's probably one of the best films to come out of Ontario. Pontypool takes place in the said town and follows a radio-persona and his two female assistants (one of whom looks like a jail-bait 13 year old or Ellen Page). The unique thing about Pontypool is that the pathogen is spread through the English language rather than bites/scratches, which makes it a very unique and scary film.

7. Six (II) (2011)

28 min | Short, Action, Horror

A controlled environment governs the fate of three strangers as they rebel against the manipulation of Compound SIX. As the hypothermia of the choking tunnels sinks in, the psychological ... See full summary »

Director: Jack De La Mare | Stars: Chris Jehan, Rebekah Fant, Elliott Crossan, Paul le Page

Votes: 24

INFECTED. Six is a film directed by a friend of mine Jack De La Mare. It stars Chris Jehan, Elliot Crossan and Rebekah Fant as they are trapped in an underground compound. However, unbeknownst to them, one of them has been injected with a toxin that degrades the victims mentally, causing hallucinations and paranoia until the victim becomes nothing but a rabid killer.

8. Dead Air (I) (2009)

Not Rated | 90 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Logan Burnhardt is the ego-king of the airwaves, but his unflappable persona is put to the test when a terrorist bio-attack unleashes a plague of flesh-ripping maniacs on Los Angeles.

Director: Corbin Bernsen | Stars: Navid Negahban, Corbin Bernsen, David Moscow, Bill Moseley

Votes: 2,096

INFECTED. Dead Air follows a very similar cowboy-hatted persona seen in Pontypool but has a different premise. Dead Air starts shortly after stadiums across America are attacked by terrorists who unleash a rabies-like virus through the air vents. In just under an hour, America falls into chaos while an unwelcome visitor enters the radio station.

9. Resident Evil (2002)

R | 100 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

33 Metascore

A special military unit fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.

Director: Paul W.S. Anderson | Stars: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Ryan McCluskey, Oscar Pearce

Votes: 222,317 | Gross: $40.12M

ZOMBIE. Based on the game of the same name. Resident Evil (originally a prequel to said game) stars action-stars Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez alongside Eric Mabius and James Purefoy. Resident Evil is really the only good movie in the live-action film trilogy. It follows amnesiac Alice as she is accompanied by a secret-paramilitary squad into an underground research facility called the "Hive" where the computer intelligence has gone homicidal and killed off all the workers. However, they soon discover why.

10. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Not Rated | 96 min | Horror

87 Metascore

There is panic throughout the nation as the dead suddenly come back to life. The film follows a group of characters who barricade themselves in an old farmhouse in an attempt to remain safe from these bloodthirsty, flesh-eating monsters.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: Duane Jones, Judith O'Dea, Karl Hardman, Marilyn Eastman

Votes: 99,039 | Gross: $0.09M

ZOMBIE. A classic, but more of a bore now than a horror. You need a short attention span to get pulled into this one. However, because it's the progenitor, it is still one of the best out there. The movie follows Babara and Ben as they retreat into a small countryside house while the dead rise and attempt to eat the living.

11. The Crazies (2010)

R | 101 min | Horror, Thriller

55 Metascore

About the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.

Director: Breck Eisner | Stars: Radha Mitchell, Timothy Olyphant, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson

Votes: 100,797 | Gross: $39.12M

INFECTED. Shortly after Night of the Living Dead, the creator of the zombie (George A. Romero) would also become the creator of the "infected" almost four decades before Danny Boyle would create 28 Days Later when he made the film "The Crazies", and in 2010, the film was remade with a modern cast and twist on this horror, where a strange chemical leak in the water causes those who drink it to turn into homicidal maniacs.

12. Quarantine (2008)

R | 89 min | Horror, Thriller

Director: John Erick Dowdle | Stars: Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Harris, Columbus Short, Jay Hernandez

Votes: 62,669 | Gross: $31.69M

INFECTED. Quarantine is the American remake of [REC]. As such, it follows the same plot as REC. Following reporter Angela Videl as she follows a crew of firemen into an apartment block to deal with the strange happenings. However, the building becomes locked down from the outside as a Rabies-like contagion spreads uncontrollably through the apartments. Quarantine features more well known actors, such as Jennifer Carpenter.

13. [Rec] (2007)

Votes: 146,041

INFECTED (demonic). [REC] is the original Spanish film version of Quarantine. Following reporter Angela Vidal as she follows a crew of firemen into an apartment block to deal with the strange happenings.

14. Land of the Dead (2005)

R | 93 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

71 Metascore

The living dead have taken over the world, and the last humans live in a walled city to protect themselves as they come to grips with the situation.

Director: George A. Romero | Stars: John Leguizamo, Asia Argento, Simon Baker, Dennis Hopper

Votes: 84,304 | Gross: $20.70M

ZOMBIE. George A. Romero's first return to the zombie franchise since Day of the Dead. Land of the Dead takes place years after the zombie apocalypse has destroyed the world. Thankfully, there is hope. Small pockets of survivors have grouped together to create whole cities, safe from the undead. One of these cities named "Fiddler's Green" however, faces problems when one of the undead named "Big Daddy" begins to recollect conscious thought, memories and emotions.

15. Dead Snow (2009)

Not Rated | 91 min | Comedy, Horror

61 Metascore

A ski vacation turns horrific for a group of medical students, as they find themselves confronted by an unimaginable menace: Nazi zombies.

Director: Tommy Wirkola | Stars: Jeppe Beck Laursen, Charlotte Frogner, Jenny Skavlan, Vegar Hoel

Votes: 58,940 | Gross: $0.04M

ZOMBIE. From the director of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow is a Norwegian zombie film that is the truest mix of horror and comedy you can get. Dead Snow might appeal to all you Call of Duty: World at War fans as well as the main focus of the film is about a group of Nazi Zombies that have risen from the dead to devour the earth (though they seem to have a specific taste for Jews).

16. Shaun of the Dead (2004)
