Rating Every The Orville (2017) Episode

by MadAmbassador | created - 2 months ago | updated - 2 weeks ago | Public

Rating every episode of Seth McFarlane's The Orville as they come out, based on my personal opinion. Keep in mind, I started writing this list late into Season 2, so my memory may be pretty foggy on certain details and aspects. Apologies in advance.

2. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Old Wounds (2017)

TV-14 | 45 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Newly promoted Captain, Ed, is taken aback when his ex-wife is assigned as his First Officer.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 3,651

Rating: 5.7/10

Thesis: Not even remotely a good start. My main issues with this episode lie in the fact that the series was so falsely advertised. The commercials and advertisements showcased your typical Seth McFarlane raunchy take on pop media, while what we got is a fan's tribute to Star Trek. There's no doubt that what we got was way better - there's a reason Family Guy is as much of a meme as it is - but it's still so jarring to be promised one thing and then be shown another altogether. Beyond that, the episode just wasn't a very good start. All of the more dramatic pieces of the episode fall entirely flat, and the jokes that weren't featured in every trailer under the god damn sun were painfully mediocre. Very disappointing.

3. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Command Performance (2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Alara must take command of the Orville when Ed and Kelly end up imprisoned in a replica of their old home.

Votes: 3,186

Director: Brannon Braga | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 3,464

Rating: 7.7/10

Thesis: A decently-solid story let down by a less-than-stellar climax.

5. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: If the Stars Should Appear (2017)

TV-14 | 43 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew encounters a vessel adrift in space that's about to collide with a star.

Director: James L. Conway | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 3,142

Rating: 8.4/10

Thesis: This show is on a steep incline. This episode, despite some small unfortunate missteps, was a great addition to a rapidly-improving show.

6. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Pria (2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Ed becomes smitten with the captain of a stranded ship, but Kelly suspects all is not what it seems.

Rating: 7.8/10

8. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Majority Rule (2017)

TV-14 | 43 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Kelly leads a team to find two missing Union anthropologists on a planet similar to Earth.

Director: Tucker Gates | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,948

Rating: 8.5/10

Thesis: Another excellent episode. Other than one or two bothersome scenes, this was one of the most intriguing episodes of sci-fi I've seen (keep in mind, I don't have much of a taste for the genre in general). This show has a lot of potential.

9. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Into the Fold (2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew set out to save Dr. Finn, her two sons and Isaac, after their shuttle gets thrown into uncharted space.

Director: Brannon Braga | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,179

Rating: 2.4/10

Thesis: What. The. Fuckity. Fucking.Fuuuuuck? I firmly believe this might be the worst episode I've ever seen in television, and I've seen Season 8 of The Walking Dead. I'm almost offended that this was ever allowed to air. The """"""""""""acting"""""""""""", the """"""""""""writing"""""""""""", and the VFX were all some of the most godawful I've ever seen. I never want to think about this ever again.

10. The Orville (2017– )

While the crew attempts to mediate a peace treaty between two warring cultures, tensions rise between Ed and Kelly when a familiar face comes aboard.

11. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Firestorm (2017)

TV-14 | 43 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Alara questions whether she's fit for her job when a fire breaks out on the Orville and a crew member dies.

Director: Brannon Braga | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,028

Rating: 8.1/10

Thesis: Disappointing ending aside, this was a surprisingly entertaining episode. While I find Alara to be far from an interesting character, and I feel that the subject matter could've become something far more, I still had a good amount of fun watching this episode, and that is what TV is for. Push the ending out of your mind and enjoy the episode for what it is.

12. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: New Dimensions (2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The Orville gets damaged by a spatial anomaly causing harrowing effects to all living things.

Director: Kelly Cronin | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,712

Rating: 7.5/10

13. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Mad Idolatry (2017)

TV-14 | 44 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew crash land on a planet from another universe; Ed and Kelly consider getting back together.

Director: Brannon Braga | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,025

Rating: 7.7/10

Thesis: An enjoyable, if not entirely whelming, finale for possibly the most mixed bag of a season I think I've ever seen. Of the three more "Earthly" outings thus far If the Stars Should Appear, Majority Rule, and this one), this has certainly been my least favourite, but it was still a good enough episode. Just wish the writers would stop focusing on the Ed and Kelly dynamic so much. It is so obviously going to happen and it won't even be that interesting when it does. It's Jim and Pam all over again, but somehow even more frustrating.

14. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Ja'loja (2018)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew face personal challenges on their way to witness Bortus perform a Moclan ceremony on his homeworld.

Director: Seth MacFarlane | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,173

Rating: 5.2/10

Thesis: God damn yikes. Not at all a good return. Some of the most frustrating and juvenile moments this show has yet to offer, and an incredibly dumb ... ahem... "climax"? Just feels like a wasted hour.

15. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Primal Urges (2019)

TV-14 | 49 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew race to save a small group of survivors on a planet about to be destroyed by its sun.

Director: Kevin Hooks | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,288

Rating: 6.6/10

Thesis: Bortus is not that interesting, Seth. Stop trying to make him so. It's so hard to care about anything that's going on here. This season needs a fast improvement, because the show is still in its fragile infantry phase, but these past two episodes do not bode well.

16. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Home (2019)

TV-14 | 49 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Ed, Gordon and Alara visit Alara's home planet of Xelayah.

Director: Jon Cassar | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,113

Rating: 5.7/10

Thesis: One decent scene near the climax does not make up for the rest of the episode's textbook mediocrity. Yet again, nothing of value to be taken from this. Oh for three.

17. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Nothing Left on Earth Excepting Fishes (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Ed finds himself behind enemy lines when he crash lands on a mysterious planet; Kelly questions why Gordon wants to take the Command Test.

Director: Jon Cassar | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,983

Rating: 8.9/10

Thesis: And just like that, The Orville manages to not only blow the rest of the season out of the water, but the rest of the series thus far too. An honest-to-god, downright excellent episode, and more than a return to form. It does have its filler and, therefore pacing, issues, but those seem minor in comparison to everything else this episode had to offer. Really great hour.

18. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: All the World Is Birthday Cake (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The Orville makes First Contact; A new crew member joins the ship.

Director: Robert Duncan McNeill | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,706

Rating: 8.7/10

Thesis: A minor step down from last week, but still pretty great. A couple plot contrivances and an awful final scene aren't enough to ruin what was mostly a highly enjoyable episode for me. I appreciated all the topics this episode dealt with, and I think it dealt with them in just the right ways - really good stuff.

19. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: A Happy Refrain (2019)

TV-14 | 49 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Claire's personal life takes an unexpected turn; Gordon makes an unusual grooming suggestion to Bortus.

Director: Seth MacFarlane | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,168

Rating: 7.3/10

Thesis: I don't know why this season wants to focus so heavily on relationships, but hey, at least it's not Ed and Kelly. A character who lacks all emotional depths in both verbal and physical personality and Isaac get together this week, and it's just... odd. Not likable. Not fun. Just weird. This season is honestly sort of feeling like a soap opera.

20. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Deflectors (2019)

TV-14 | 49 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The ship's deflectors upgrade leads to conflict between the Moclan culture and the crew.

Director: Seth MacFarlane | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,594

Rating: 5.4/10

21. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Identity, Part I (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

When Issac shuts down, the crew head to his home planet to fix him, and uncover a shocking secret that was better off hidden.

Director: Jon Cassar | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,471

Rating: 8.3/10

22. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Identity, Part II (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The Kaylons take control of the Orville with the intention of destroying all biological lifeforms.

Director: Jon Cassar | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,207

Rating: 8.8/10

Thesis: Other than Claire's children continuing to be the worst things to ever happen to fiction, this was a superb episode. Mostly great twists and pacing feel rejuvenating, and I think I can finally start to take this show seriously. In my opinion, The Orville finally proved itself.

23. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Blood of Patriots (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Ed must initiate peace talks with the Krill.

Director: Rebecca Rodriguez | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,278

Rating: 8.1/10

Thesis: Messy? Sure. Unoriginal? Absolutely. Great fun and entertainment? Also very, very true. There was something surprising about this episode that I can't place my finger on, but whatever it was, it was for the best. This show is really starting to become a great thing.

24. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Lasting Impressions (2019)

TV-14 | 49 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew opens a time capsule from 2015.

Director: Kelly Cronin | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 2,144

Rating: 9.1/10

Thesis: What a wonderful episode. It was beautiful, and human, and heartwarming, and funny, and just an all-round treat. The A-plot was really nice, the B-plot was a Moclan plotline that DIDN'T suck (finally), so really, what is there not to like?

25. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Sanctuary (2019)

TV-14 | 46 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Ed discovers that Moclans aboard the Orville are harboring a secret.

Director: Jonathan Frakes | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,314

Rating: 4.4/10

26. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

A time distortion affects Ed and Kelly's relationship.

Director: Gary S. Rake | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,073

Rating: 7.2

27. The Orville (2017– )
Episode: The Road Not Taken (2019)

TV-14 | 48 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

The crew must contend with the disastrous fallout from Kelly's decision.

Director: Gary S. Rake | Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes

Votes: 1,041

Rating: 2.4/10

Thesis: Unbelievably god awful. I am in no mood to go on an uncoordinated rant on the absolute state of this travesty, I'll just say that if The Orville is not renewed, I would not at all be mad.
