1. Perfectos desconocidos (2018)

R | 97 min | Comedy

63 Metascore

What begins as a provocative party game quickly becomes a wild ride full of twists and "textual tension" in this comedy about the secrets we all carry in our pockets.

Director: Manolo Caro | Stars: Bruno Bichir, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Franky Martín, Miguel Rodarte

Votes: 558

It might be the umpteenth remake of the original film, but Perfectos Desconocidos nevertheless glides off the strength of its supporting cast to deliver an evening the viewer is not apt to forget.

2. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

PG | 107 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

It's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing a huge new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

Director: Mike Mitchell | Stars: Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Tiffany Haddish

Votes: 8,069 | Gross: $41.48M

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is a bit eager to recycle old jokes, but another dynamite screenplay from Phil Lord and Chris Miller keeps the franchise insightful and subversive.

3. What Men Want (2019)

R | 117 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

49 Metascore

A woman is boxed out by the male sports agents in her profession, but gains an unexpected edge over them when she develops the ability to hear men's thoughts.

Director: Adam Shankman | Stars: Taraji P. Henson, Kristen Ledlow, Josh Brener, Kellan Lutz

Votes: 2,050 | Gross: $25.23M

The gender-swapped What Men Want doesn't fully capitalize on its central conceit, but a stellar Taraji P. Henson does enough to ensure the comedic alley-oop.

4. Escape Room (2019)

PG-13 | 99 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

48 Metascore

Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms, and must use their wits to survive.

Director: Adam Robitel | Stars: Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine

Votes: 10,365 | Gross: $55.10M

Competently constructed but fundamentally flawed, Escape Room fails to be as fun as the real thing as its script can't solve the puzzle behind its own mystery.

5. Glass (2019)

PG-13 | 129 min | Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller

42 Metascore

Security guard David Dunn uses his supernatural abilities to track Kevin Wendell Crumb, a disturbed man who has twenty-four personalities.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: James McAvoy, Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Anya Taylor-Joy

Votes: 64,266 | Gross: $100.63M

A disappointing conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan's superhero saga, Glass gets so bogged down in its own mythology that it shatters the plot to pieces.

6. Miss Bala (2019)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

41 Metascore

Gloria finds a power she never knew she had when she is drawn into a dangerous world of cross-border crime. Surviving will require all of her cunning, inventiveness, and strength. Based on the Spanish-language film.

Director: Catherine Hardwicke | Stars: Gina Rodriguez, Thomas Dekker, Vivian Chan, Barbarella Pardo

Votes: 1,185 | Gross: $12.89M

Miss Bala has a more than capable Gina Rodriguez in the lead role, but she's given nothing to do in this dull action-thriller south of the border.

7. Replicas (2018)

PG-13 | 107 min | Sci-Fi, Thriller

19 Metascore

A scientist becomes obsessed with bringing back his family members who died in a traffic accident.

Director: Jeffrey Nachmanoff | Stars: Alice Eve, Thomas Middleditch, John Ortiz, Emjay Anthony

Votes: 9,851 | Gross: $4.04M

Despite an intriguing sci-fi setup, the poorly acted, poorly written, and poorly executed Replicas crosses so many narrative wires that it completely shuts down.

8. Serenity (2019)

R | 106 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

38 Metascore

A fishing boat captain juggles facing his mysterious past and finding himself ensnared in a reality where nothing is what it seems.

Director: Steven Knight | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Diane Lane, Jason Clarke

Votes: 3,456 | Gross: $8.49M

Pretentious to the absolute max, Serenity reels in a preposterous twist that makes it more baffling than it is compelling.
