Die Gründe für den Bedeutungsverlust der bis zur Gegenwart nicht aufgeholt werden konnte sind vielfältig und zahlreich. Die unterdurchschnittliche materielle Ausstattung und die jahrzehntelange fehlende Wertschätzung des Films als Kunstform zog eine verblüffend geringe Talentdichte nach sich. So scheinen alle zu wissen, dass es von den mehr als 200 jährlich entstehenden deutschen Filmen wenigstens ein paar zu internationaler Wahrnehmung bringen müssten. Und alle reagieren mit reflexhafter Empörung auf die Tatsache, dass in den Wettbewerben der großen Festivals von Cannes und Venedig kaum ein deutscher Film läuft. Trotzdem machen alle einfach weiter.
