So I rewatched the uncut version of this as a comedy and actually had a good time, pretty funny, and form-wise it isn't as bad as I initially thought.

The uncut version is actually worth tracking down imo. There hasn't been an uncut BR release yet, so you'll only be able to find it on DVD or some streaming platforms. The runtimes are listed on imdb for those interested in doing so. There's also a helpful movie-censorship dot com comparison.

Perhaps much of my dismay to it on first-watch, was the fact that I had just watched Part VIII, so getting another turd would have been frustrating after the abomination of Jason Takes Manhattan.

The Crystal Lake Memories docu gave it some more context too.

Anyway, this is definitely a guilty pleasure/good-bad for me now.

Votes: 3,956

Apparently people dislike this glorious film.

This is actually a fantastic, quirky, creepy and genuinely interesting movie provided you can get past the stylistic 'gimmick' (you'll know it when you see it). That and people are annoyed by snobby children? I had a blast personally.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Penélope Cruz, Will Ferrell

Votes: 75,540 | Gross: $28.85M

Maybe I just have bad standards but I found this pretty funny overall. There are definitely more than a few bum moments but it's not like the first was amazing either... Whatever Kristen Wiig is doing doesn't work. My man Kyle Mooney is great and steals every scene he's in. Owen Wilson doesn't really have any dialogue besides expository, that was odd. And his arc doesn't exactly mesh with the "plot" (and I use that term lightly). Wtf was with Fred Armisen as "VIP". Why? Will Ferrel was okay for what he was given; not his best work. What is Billy Zane's allegiance?

Pure badarse, guilty pleasure.

Shame about the previous film in the franchise...

MASTA-PEACE of shit, holy-mole-guacamole! Hurrah! Bravo!

Like a cross between The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Friday the 13th Part 2 & 3, Night of the Living Dead etc. There's a vampire in there, there is.

I want this screened at my funeral.

The soundtrack alone is life-changing. The fucking sound effects, holy shit.

An avant-garde tour de force. A french fucking pièce de résistance.

Truly mesmerising...

(Mostly) likeable characters, lighting, pacing, wow... it's weird to experience these things again after the boring dreck that was The Evil Escapes.

Also what were the reviews for that on about? This totally follows directly on from that, because it has like the same cat, even if it's not demonic or whatever, it's enough nod I think. Although maybe an evil cat film would be good too. I digress.

Found myself chuckling and digging a few neat little scares in this. Definitely could have used more & better score.

I was curious about the plot unfolding but a bit underwhelmed with the ending. Anyone else annoyed that '111' and the disappearing boy stuff was not explained? But I guess the viewer can patch their own head-canon together... (my theory is that it's something to do with the priest's "sins").

Dawna Wightman who plays the protagonist (I suppose), can't act, although sometimes the attempt can be funny. Sounds like she's laughing when she's meant to be crying. Plenty of cringe. Annoying character too. Her skeptic boyfriend was much more enjoyable to watch, even if he would have been dumped within a week considering their complete incompatibility and his moderate condescension. The focus on her is the biggest issue here.

On the other hand, the antagonist (I guess you could say), is easily the highlight.

How anyone can prefer a dull af film about a lamp that turns itself on when nobody is looking is so far beyond me. If you prefer The Evil Escapes to this, then you are dead to me tbh.
