Some time ago I started writing short reviews of films I watched and posted them on Film Afficianado, while also rating them X/10. I have been thinking about a way to organize these alphabetically so I could find them easily if I needed to. I will try dividing the alphabet into 4 Lists. I will probably have to wait until I am at a computer to organize each List. I will probably keep sequels chronological.

1. The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Approved | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Western

An oppressed Mexican peasant village hires seven gunfighters to help defend their homes.

Director: John Sturges | Stars: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Eli Wallach

Votes: 78,326 | Gross: $4.91M

8/10 - 1st x viewing. I saw this on TV with commercial breaks. There seemed to be some weird cuts and odd character bits. The bad guy almost had more honor than the good guys? Bad guy gives the good guys their guns back and, of course, they go right back. First shoot out seems to start with no real reason. Was it an accident? May be better on 2nd viewing? Really probably at a 7, but may be giving it a higher rating because of its historical value. 11/7/16.

2. The Magnificent Seven (2016)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Western

54 Metascore

Seven gunmen in the old west gradually come together to help a poor village against savage thieves.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio

Votes: 159,375 | Gross: $93.43M

8/10 - In the theater. Not bad. Seems like there have been several PG-13 films that I could see with 1 or both of my parents. Some long gunfight/action sequences. Main actress was cute, kinda looks like BDHoward. Theater had free posters out and I got a sun damaged Pete's Dragon. 9/30/16

3. The Man in the Moon (1991)

PG-13 | 99 min | Drama, Romance

A coming of age story set in the south of the U.S. when Elvis was King.

Director: Robert Mulligan | Stars: Sam Waterston, Tess Harper, Gail Strickland, Reese Witherspoon

Votes: 13,737 | Gross: $2.85M

7, maybe 8/10. 1st interested because the screenwriter lives in East Tx. Recently Jimmy Fallon has mentioned that this is his favorite movie, and it just happened to come on again. This viewing was Full Screen though. 3-19-14

4. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

55 Metascore

Clark Kent, one of the last of an extinguished race disguised as an unremarkable human, is forced to reveal his identity when Earth is invaded by an army of survivors who threaten to bring the planet to the brink of destruction.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 625,017 | Gross: $291.05M

8/10 - I think I rated this 7/10 when I first saw it. Sure, it has its flaws, but I enjoyed it. I will probably see BM v SM despite the bad critical reviews. 3-26-16

5. The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973)

PG | 114 min | Romance, Western

Western story about a defiant wife who leaves her husband to take up riding with outlaws.

Director: Richard C. Sarafian | Stars: Burt Reynolds, Sarah Miles, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Warden

Votes: 1,148

8/10 - Despite the title, it is actually a dark Western. Abuse of the female lead character got really old. This will probably keep it from being one I would want to watch again. When it is revealed what happened to Cat Dancing (Native American female's name) it is hard to think of a character highly anymore. 8-10-14

6. Manhunter (1986)

R | 120 min | Crime, Horror, Mystery

75 Metascore

Former FBI profiler Will Graham returns to service to pursue a deranged serial murderer named "the Tooth Fairy" by the media.

Director: Michael Mann | Stars: William Petersen, Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Brian Cox

Votes: 57,486 | Gross: $8.62M

8/10 - I have seen parts of this before, but not sure if I have ever seen the whole thing. There are some amazingly beautiful shots. The blue house look and the various beaches/water/houses with big windows all look great. There are some weird slo-mo and jump cuts. The through the window scene is great. I have not seen Red Dragon or any other related movies other than Silence of the Lambs. 4/2/17.

7. The Manitou (1977)

PG | 104 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

A psychic's girlfriend finds out that a lump on her back is a growing reincarnation of a 400 year-old demonic Native American spirit.

Director: William Girdler | Stars: Tony Curtis, Susan Strasberg, Michael Ansara, Stella Stevens

Votes: 2,199

7/10 - TCM Underground DVR'd 4/27/2103? Actually well made and shot. Nice camera work. Some corniness in the last 1/3rd. Possible influence on Poltergeist 2/3? 10-04-14

8. Mars Attacks! (1996)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable weapons and a cruel sense of humor.

Director: Tim Burton | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Annette Bening

Votes: 191,135 | Gross: $37.77M

7/10 - DVR'd off IFC. Corny, but ambitious and fun. 6-11-14

9. Masterminds (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 95 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

47 Metascore

A guard at an armored car company in the Southern U.S. organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history. Based on the October 1997 Loomis Fargo robbery.

Director: Jared Hess | Stars: Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Ross Kimball

Votes: 42,326 | Gross: $17.36M

8/10 - In the theater. Don't think this is bad as critics are saying. If you like Jared Hess' other films and like the actors involved, you will probably like it. 10/02/16

10. Matinee (1993)

PG | 99 min | Comedy, Drama

A small-time film promoter releases a kitschy horror film during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Director: Joe Dante | Stars: John Goodman, Cathy Moriarty, Simon Fenton, Omri Katz

Votes: 8,094 | Gross: $9.53M

8/10 - Matinee. I really enjoyed this. I had literally not seen a frame of this movie before watching this, so I may like it more if I watch it again. I only have the movie because I bought this $5 10 movie collection. It's a shame that Dante wants to add extras to this movie, but the studio did not even care. I didn't see Rosebud, but I wasn't really looking for it. This concludes my Joe Dante marathon. 1-14-15

11. McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)

R | 120 min | Drama, Western

A gambler and a prostitute become business partners in a remote Old West mining town, and their enterprise thrives until a large corporation arrives on the scene.

Director: Robert Altman | Stars: Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Rene Auberjonois, William Devane

Votes: 19,047

8/10 - At least. It is the kind of film that may need to be watched again because of its structure. May grow fonder with more viewings. It is very atmospheric and well directed. TCM DVR 10/28/2013. 6-21-14

12. Me, Myself & Irene (2000)

R | 116 min | Comedy

49 Metascore

A nice-guy cop with dissociative identity disorder must protect a woman on the run from a corrupt ex-boyfriend and his associates.

Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly | Stars: Jim Carrey, Renée Zellweger, Anthony Anderson, Mongo Brownlee

Votes: 204,691 | Gross: $90.57M

8/10? - First time to see this completely in original form since I saw it in the theater. Some very funny stuff, but I would prefer it if they cut back a lot of the raunchiness and made it more akin to Dumb & Dumber. Free DISH movie channel DVR. 9-12-14

13. Metro (1997)

R | 117 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

A Hostage Negotiator teams up with a Sharpshooter to bring down a dangerous jewel thief.

Director: Thomas Carter | Stars: Eddie Murphy, Michael Rapaport, Kim Miyori, Art Evans

Votes: 23,326 | Gross: $31.99M

8/10 - 1st viewing. My DVD does not have the purple WS bar, though it is WS. Ramboraph loves Golden Child & said Metro was another underrated Murphy film. I was pleasantly surprised. Some nice action and a clever villain (that looks like he could be James Franco's dad). Surprised at the low ratings. Maybe there were too many of these types of films at the time and it felt old hat then. Too bad Thomas Carter did not direct more films like this. Love interest looks like Tessa Thompson? 2/18/18.

14. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

75 Metascore

Ethan and team take on their most impossible mission yet, eradicating the Syndicate - an International rogue organization as highly skilled as they are, committed to destroying the IMF.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg

Votes: 295,052 | Gross: $195.04M

9/10 - I haven't seen this since I saw it in the theater. It's great in every aspect I can think of. Nods to Hitchcock and The Third Man. Rebecca Ferguson wow. One review said that Fallout carries on from this film, so I wanted to see it again before seeing Fallout. 7/28/18.

8/10 - Strong 8, maybe 9. Saw this at Regal Theater in Longview, Tx. Earned a free ticket. Can't remember anything wrong with it. Maybe I should bump it up. Action scenes seemed blurry. Is that how it was supposed to look, or was it an error with theater projection? Can only remember 1 profanity. Is this a requirement of post-Scientology Tom Cruise vehicles? Expected a kiss, but only hugged lead female when they parted. 8-15-15

15. The Mummy (2017)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

34 Metascore

An ancient Egyptian princess is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.

Director: Alex Kurtzman | Stars: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Russell Crowe

Votes: 142,341 | Gross: $80.10M

7/10 - Saw this for $1.38 with some Dr Pepper movie money. I thought it was OK. I actually kinda want to see it again. The problems people have with it are all valid. Still had a fun time. Go figure. Have not seen any Brendan Fraser Mummy movies. 6/15/17.

16. The Mummy (1999)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

48 Metascore

At an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreck havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love.

Director: Stephen Sommers | Stars: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo

Votes: 356,362 | Gross: $155.25M

7/10 - 1x viewing. This movie is a lot of fun. It didn't help that I had commercial breaks in the middle of action sequences though. Rachel Weisz looked amazing, like a real life doll woman. Wow. I had no interest in this in 1999. Not sure, but I think I thought the CGI looked bad, especially the famous beetles, and Fraser just seemed a little goofy for an Indiana Jones role. He did better than I expected, but still had awkward movements during action scenes. The curse makes no sense. Real life curse example would be if Charles Manson was locked up for life, but if he escapes he will become Superman. What? Ha. You could really tell that Fraser was fighting at the air, because the eyelines/sight did not match up well with the CGI mummies, etc. The beetles were too numerous and too fast to seem realistic. People knock The Mummy 2017 for taking from others or being generic, this takes from Indiana Jones and has several generic side characters. 7/8/17.

17. The Mummy Returns (2001)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

48 Metascore

The mummified body of Imhotep is shipped to a museum in London, where he once again wakes and begins his campaign of rage and terror.

Director: Stephen Sommers | Stars: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo

Votes: 276,235 | Gross: $202.02M

6/10 - This is just OK. Weisz still looks great, but her character is different. I guess even at the beginning she is possessed? Wouldn't Rick think it was weird though? Just corny. Some people say this series is up there with Indiana Jones. No way. Some of the reactions of the actors are so over the top and cornball. Very few good lines of dialog. JUST found out that Spike cut some of the funniest lines. I know films are edited for language, etc, but never heard of non-controversial lines cut. 8/12/17.

18. Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

PG-13 | 114 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

52 Metascore

When a murder occurs on the train he's travelling on, celebrated detective Hercule Poirot is recruited to solve the case.

Director: Kenneth Branagh | Stars: Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench

Votes: 159,511 | Gross: $102.83M

8/10 - Redbox Bday freebie. Believe it or not, I'm not familiar with this story, or maybe any Christie for that matter. The ending is pretty clever. Branagh shows some great directing chops with one 4 min uncut shot and also a nice overhead scene. The landscape cinematography and framing was great, too, and apparently shot on 65mm film. 7/8/18.

19. Nebraska (2013)

R | 115 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

86 Metascore

An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.

Director: Alexander Payne | Stars: Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb, Bob Odenkirk

Votes: 102,813 | Gross: $17.65M

8/10 - Nice little movie. Can't think of anything wrong with it. Would recommend to family if it had less cursing. Score may grow over he years with multiple viewings. Redbox Freebie. 4-12-14

20. Neighbors (I) (2014)

R | 97 min | Comedy

68 Metascore

After they are forced to live next to a fraternity house, a couple with a newborn baby do whatever they can to take them down.

Director: Nicholas Stoller | Stars: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Lisa Kudrow

Votes: 257,024 | Gross: $150.16M

7/10 - Redbox freebie. Some funny bits, but nothing amazing. I have been wanting to rent Snowpiercer, but it is always checked out. The new Redbox website is confusing, as it shows all movies at a location whether they are there or not. The older layout was much better - when a movie was checked out it was moved to the bottom of the page and greyed out. 11-1-14

21. The NeverEnding Story (1984)

PG | 102 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

46 Metascore

A troubled boy dives into a wondrous fantasy world through the pages of a mysterious book.

Director: Wolfgang Petersen | Stars: Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Gerald McRaney

Votes: 114,845 | Gross: $20.16M

9/10 - Watching this now knowing about movie making - I hope the horse was trained to be pulled on like that, because it looks like it is in pain the way it is opening its mouth. Then you have to think the scene is most likely edited from multiple takes. I wonder if chunks of the movie were cut out, because the horse is barely in the movie before this happens. There are some really jarring scene transitions that feel more like portions were cut out instead of them just being artistic editing. This would be more like an 8 for the strong sets, creatures and music, but the fact that it was so memorable for my childhood pushes it further for me. Feels like the studio made the movie be 90 mins so they cut chunks out. Music was surprisingly bumpin'. Ha. Real sets/creatures > CGI! 1/14/17.

22. The Nice Guys (2016)

R | 116 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

70 Metascore

In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer

Votes: 224,784 | Gross: $36.26M

8.5/10 - Used my 2nd $5 DP coupon. This was a lot of fun. It will be on a lot of Top 10 lists at the end of the year. 5-21-2016.

The comment is short because I saw it in the theater and didn't want to spoil anything at the time.

23. Night of the Lepus (1972)

PG | 88 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

Giant mutant rabbits terrorize the south-west.

Director: William F. Claxton | Stars: Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh, Rory Calhoun, DeForest Kelley

Votes: 3,615

5/10 - TCM showed this around Easter. A horror movie about giant rabbits. Very laughable at times, but not that fun to watch. To make matters worse, they shoot a horse in one of the first scenes. The only way I might watch it again would have to be a Rifftrax/MST3K type thing. 4/18/17.

24. Noah (2014)

PG-13 | 138 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

68 Metascore

Noah is chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson

Votes: 222,652 | Gross: $101.20M

7/10 ? - Watched it at the new IMAX theater in Tyler. Lots of random extra stuff added to the story. Technically a well made film, but I am sad as to what it could have been. 3-30-14

25. Nocturnal Animals (2016)

R | 116 min | Crime, Drama, Romance

67 Metascore

A wealthy art gallery owner receives a draft of her ex-husband's new novel, a violent thriller she interprets as a veiled threat and a symbolic revenge tale.

Director: Tom Ford | Stars: Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Votes: 187,987 | Gross: $10.64M

8.5-9/10 - I have delayed writing about this film. From a craft standpoint, it is definitely a well made arthouse film. I'm not sure it is one I want to go back and watch again though. The opening credits are insane. I left not completely sure of what happened. I should have written my thoughts sooner to when I watched it on 12/10/16. 12-18-16.

26. Nothing But Trouble (1991)

PG-13 | 94 min | Comedy

A businessman and his friends are captured by a sadistic judge and his equally odd family in the backwoods of a bizarre mansion.

Director: Dan Aykroyd | Stars: Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Demi Moore

Votes: 20,042 | Gross: $8.48M

7/10 - Weird, quirky, original. Unfortunately only available in Full Screen on DVD. If I see a widescreen version, I may like it more. It was never boring at all. Used DVD through Hasting's. 6-22-14

27. Of Unknown Origin (1983)

R | 88 min | Horror

51 Metascore

A man who recently completed rebuilding a townhouse becomes obsessed with a rat infestation until it becomes an interspecies duel.

Director: George P. Cosmatos | Stars: Peter Weller, Jennifer Dale, Lawrence Dane, Kenneth Welsh

Votes: 2,300 | Gross: $1.08M

8/10? - 1stxviewing. DVR'd 5/7/17. TCM Underground. DVR'd this because it sounded crazy. I didn't know if it was a human size rat or what. Some of the rat stuff is corny and can feel like a TV horror anthology episode. Other times there are big camera moves. Weller gets crazy and it is quite funny at times. Probably need to watch it again to get a better feel. 9/23/17

28. Office Christmas Party (2016)

R | 105 min | Comedy

42 Metascore

When his uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch, the branch manager throws an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save the day, but the party gets way out of hand...

Directors: Josh Gordon, Will Speck | Stars: Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, T.J. Miller, Jennifer Aniston

Votes: 51,565 | Gross: $54.73M

7/10 - This was way down the list, but the choices were 2 movies I'd already seen or 2 cartoons. Didn't quite hit the Seth Rogen movie level of raunchiness, but a definite R. Just realized I've seen 3 movies this year with Kate McKinnon. Better than expected, but I expected little. This theater has $4 matinees. Had a dude in the audience who laughed at everything from second 1. He had a real laugh and a weird cartoony laugh. 12-9-16.

29. Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

R | 119 min | Action, Thriller

41 Metascore

Disgraced Secret Service agent (and former presidential guard) Mike Banning finds himself trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack; using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett

Votes: 228,931 | Gross: $98.93M

6/10 - Been a while since I saw White House Down, but I think I give OHF the edge. On an enjoyable level, outside of the gratuitous point blank head shot killings, I would probably give it a 7, but the more I think about the movie, the worse it gets. RedBox 22 cents used for Mom. 4-20-14

30. Over the Top (1987)

PG | 93 min | Action, Drama, Sport

40 Metascore

Tough trucker Lincoln Hawk is determined to win back his son and triumph at the world arm wrestling championships.

Director: Menahem Golan | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Robert Loggia, Susan Blakely, Rick Zumwalt

Votes: 43,775 | Gross: $16.06M

7/10 - 2nd viewing. DVR'd 1-16-2015. I watched it once some time ago, but didn't want to delete it before watching again. It's a fun 80's Stallone movie with its share of cheesy bad guys and montages. I had to watch Hawk punch the dude through the glass door half a dozen times. I think my earlier 1st x viewing thoughts are somewhere on here, so I will look that up later. 12-24-16.

31. Pacific Rim (2013)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

Votes: 433,249 | Gross: $101.80M

5/10 - 22 cents Redbox. Didn't enjoy it at all. Fights were dark and hard to follow. Little girl flashbacks were interesting. Way too long. Could lose most of the Charlie Day/tracking down brain stuff. I was just waiting for it to end and it kept going. 6-7-14

32. The Paper (1994)

R | 112 min | Comedy, Drama

New York City tabloid Editor Henry is faced with tough decisions while he faces several serious life challenges, and a tempting job offer.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Marisa Tomei

Votes: 11,687 | Gross: $38.82M

9/10 - Great direction by Ron Howard. Great acting and writing all around. Several very memorable lines. The logo transitions to a clock. The camera "goes inside" a watch. This has to be one of the best films of the 90's that I never see mentioned. Keaton goes to his crazy place some. Looks like there is only a Full Screen DVD release? That's crazy! Great cast. Definitely would pick this up if it was cheap. DVR'd 12/29/2014. 11-27-2016.

33. Pearl Jam Twenty (2011)

Not Rated | 109 min | Documentary, History, Music

59 Metascore

A documentary on the band Pearl Jam that marks their 20th anniversary in the year 2011.

Director: Cameron Crowe | Stars: Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Cameron Crowe

Votes: 7,174 | Gross: $0.45M

DVR'd 2-22-2015. 2nd viewing. Finally cleared it off the DVR. Surprised that no songs from No Code show up at all. 12-22-16.

34. Pennies from Heaven (1981)

R | 108 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

During the Great Depression, a sheet music salesman seeks to escape his dreary life through popular music and a love affair with an innocent school teacher.

Director: Herbert Ross | Stars: Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Jessica Harper, Vernel Bagneris

Votes: 4,689 | Gross: $9.18M

8/10?- Well made film. Steve Martin followed The Jerk with a depressing musical. Don't care much for his character's actions though. Christopher Walken has a long dance number. DVR'd from TCM 5/16/2013 (no typo on year). 5-18-14

35. Pete's Dragon (2016)

PG | 102 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

71 Metascore

The adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliot, who just so happens to be a dragon.

Director: David Lowery | Stars: Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Oakes Fegley, Oona Laurence

Votes: 47,153 | Gross: $76.23M

9/10 - I really enjoyed the film. I decided to go at noon on Saturday. It was in one of the smaller rooms, but it was pretty full with kids and parents. They all seemed to be into the film. After the emotional points during the end, I noticed how the room was pretty much silent except for sniffles. Then there was a theater wide gasp at the final scene. I must admit some bias. I became interested in the film because the director/co-writer is part of an online community I've visited since the early 2000's. It is pretty cool that Disney gave him the chance to do the film. He is based out of the Dallas area and had only done one smaller movie prior, besides some more independent type films. Now they have also asked him to work on a live action Peter Pan film. 8/20/16

36. The Phantom (1996)

Votes: 29,933 | Gross: $17.30M

7/10? - DISH Full Screen freebie. Watched in 2 halves. May enjoy more in Widescreen. CZeta Jones and Kristy Swanson. 3-24-14

37. Phantom Thread (2017)

R | 130 min | Drama, Romance

90 Metascore

Set in 1950's London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Vicky Krieps, Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, Julie Vollono

Votes: 71,954 | Gross: $21.02M

9/10 - Wow, just wow. I don't think Inherent Vice ever came to theaters around here. It got no awards buzz, so it didn't get an Oscar push like films get at this time. I saw The Master in the theater and haven't revisited it yet. I want to see this film again already. Annoying theater audience has some to do with it because they broke the 'spell' at times. I avoided most info on the movie and it went places I did not expect. 1/27/18.

38. Pi (1998)

R | 84 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

72 Metascore

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, Ben Shenkman, Pamela Hart

Votes: 157,570 | Gross: $3.22M

At least 8/10. Very well made low budget film. 1st viewing. Wonder if this inspired Primer. Seems influenced by Eraserhead/Lynch. 3-16-14

39. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

63 Metascore

8/10 - I may have half watched this before. I just had no interest at the time. I went to Pirates 5 mostly because of the good 3D review and had a good time. Everyone says the 1st is the best and it just happened to come on TV. Keira Knightly looks stunning at times. A fun movie. I think some of the corny CGI of this era kept me away from some of these types of movies. 6/4/17.

8/10 - 1st x viewing. Watched this on a Sunday afternoon with ads sprinkled throughout. Not the ideal way to watch a film and then rate it. It was enjoyable in this fashion though. I like the Buster Keaton-esque action/comedy sequences and enjoyed them in part 5. I had only seen 1 and 5 at this point, so it was not as redundant to me. I was very surprised at how good the special fx are. Are they better in this than both 1 and 5? Nothing looked corny to me compared to the other two. 9/24/17.

7/10? - 1stxviewing. Man, this thing was long and confusing. Supposedly the 2nd most expensive film ever made behind its sequel? All of the FX did look pretty good. I really never know exactly what's going on in these Pirates films. Is that the ex-boyfriend, or is that...? Who is this character again? 7 is probably too lenient. They are kinda fun adventures though. 10/12/17.

7.5/10 - This dialed back the over complicated plots of some of the previous ones, so I may like it more. I've already forgotten a lot of the others. Supposedly the most expensive movie ever made. You can feel it in the location shooting. Everything looks pretty cool, but I guess they had to use a lot of CGI to cover the mermaids toplessness. Was the mermaid/priest bit left open? Vampire mermaids were a new thing to me. Jack on top of moving transportation reminded me of Teen Wolf's van surfing. 12/10/17.

7/10 - I only became interested in seeing this after CinemaBlend gave the 3D a perfect score. I have maybe seen the 1st film once, and have not seen any others. It did have some nice 3D and some fun action set pieces. The 3D version is probably more like an 8. 3D usually makes me enjoy the film a little more than if simply watching it in 2D. 5/28/17.

7.5/10? - Kinda like a Zach Braff movie. There is intelligence behind the movie/writing, but it's little too sure of itself? It has some nice moments - the charity/race edits, Ashley Tisdale cameo - but feels familiar at the same time. If it was shot more classically and the pop music was replaced with jazz, would it be kinda Woody Allen-ish? Poster artwork is horrendous. 3-9-2016.

6/10 - TCM Underground 11/29/15. Cool opening and song. Bill Murray sings a song. Corny and over the top, but it knows it...I think? The sniffing stuff and Odorama bit is pretty funny. Having an Odorama card to use might be interesting. Characters are over the top versions of clichés. Daughter may be worst. Some edits/scene transitions are really poorly done. Foot stomper? Haha. 11/26/17.

8/10 - This is an odd film. I think I first knew about it due to Punch-Drunk Love. He Needs Me comes from this film. PTA also talked about this film and Altman. It looks like all the sets were built on location in Malta. An entire little town. It's a cartoon come to life with all practical effects. The dialog is muffled at times and hard to understand. Duvall yelling help gets old. The He Needs Me number by Duvall was great. I might look for a cheap DVD sometime. Had a few instances of this film recently to bring it to mind. Played a game on Thanksgiving and this movie was an answer for a question. On Record Store Day Friday they re-released the soundtrack on vinyl. DVR'd around April 2015. Wish it was released on CD. Harry Nilsson wrote songs and VanDyke Parks did some of the score. 11-26-2016.

8.5./10 - 3rd viewing? This film surprised me. I'm not the biggest on raunchy teen sex films, but this, in my opinion, goes beyond the Rogen type films and has a heart. I found it funny, too. Surprised to see that many didn't like it. Seeing the trailers for Happy Death Day, reminded me of this. It is a time loop movie, but the day starts over every time the teen has an orgasm. The female lead is very cute. Has 2 of the leads from the Scream TV series. I have delayed deleting it, need to get DVD. 9/23/17.

8/10 - DISH freebie HBO. This & Frantic are 2 Ford films that I have seen in stores for years, but hadn't watched. This was a solid film that keeps you guessing. I wonder if a few little things were done differently, it may be a classic. Does the opening/ending narration work? Odd to see John Williams in a non Spielberg film. Parts of the score sound a bit like his later Harry Potter work. 7-12-14
