In Memory of Robert Guillaume

Venerated actor Robert Guillaume has passed away at the age of 89. While he is probably known best for the role he played for nearly 10 years on two different shows, Benson DuBois, Guillaume had a career that lasted over 50 years and included work on stage, film and television, including voice-only roles.

He won two Emmys for playing Benson, becoming the first African-American actor to win an Emmy for Supporting Actor in a Comedy and Lead Actor in a Comedy. He was the only African-American to win either of those categories until 2017 when Donald Glover won for Atlanta. Guillaume also won a Grammy for voicing a Lion King read-along-book and was the first person to play the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera following the original actor, Michael Crawford.
