Date Watched: 21st July 2018 My Rating: 3.5/5

A psychedelic fever dream in the best possible way, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again barely has a plot, and the set-ups for its musical numbers are forced beyond belief, but the energy of its cast, especially Lily James, and the infectiously catchy musical numbers are enough for it to be a very enjoyable time at the cinema.

Though it can be a little bit loud and obnoxious at times, and there are many jokes which completely miss their mark, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is still a laugh-out-loud and entertaining addition to the superhero genre, which could rival Deadpool for the most meta-humour in a superhero movie.

Date Watched: 2nd July 2018 My Rating: 3.5/5

Sicario 2: Soldado is very well-made considering the lack of Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins, contains excellent performances from Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, and some very potent political subtext. However, it is an unnecessary sequel, an incredibly dark and draining film, and ends in a way that blatantly sets up another sequel.

Rami Malek is hypnotic as Freddie Mercury and the film's recreation of its time period is astonishing, but Bohemian Rhapsody is a little silhouetto of a film which doesn't come close to capturing how extraordinary of a band Queen were, and suffers from the bland direction of Bryan Singer.

Perfect Friday evening viewing, but predictable and not very engaging.

Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Votes: 197,548 | Gross: $102.08M

Date Watched: 18th August 2018 My Rating: 3/5

The Equalizer 2 has some brutal action, and great performances from Denzel Washington, Ashton Sanders and Pedro Pascal, but is bogged down by severe pacing issues and a general feeling of being unremarkable, much like its predecessor.

88. A Wrinkle in Time (2018)

Ava DuVernay makes a valiant effort, but despite noble intentions, A Wrinkle in Time does buckle under the weight of its own ambitions.

89. Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Votes: 163,164 | Gross: $58.03M

Date Watched: 9th February 2018 My Rating: 3/5

As a conclusion to the series, The Death Cure is a satisfying end, with some story directions that I legitimately didn't expect. At the same time, it's strictly for fans.

90. Tomb Raider (2018)

PG-13 | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

48 Metascore

Lara Croft, the fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer, must push herself beyond her limits when she discovers the island where her father, Lord Richard Croft disappeared.

Director: Roar Uthaug | Stars: Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu

Votes: 227,034 | Gross: $58.25M

Date Watched: 16th March 2018 My Rating: 3/5

More entertaining than it has any right to be, but Tomb Raider still suffers from the problem that will be the downfall of all video game adaptations, that being the disconnect between an audience member viewing events unfolding on a screen and a player directly in control of what happens in a video game.

91. Gringo (2018)

R | 111 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

46 Metascore

GRINGO, a dark comedy mixed with white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, explores the battle of survival for businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) when he finds himself crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal.

Votes: 32,141 | Gross: $4.97M

Date Watched: 9th March 2018 My Rating: 3/5

Gringo takes an incredibly talented cast and some interesting ideas and squanders them in a film that has no idea what it wants to be.

92. Mortal Engines (2018)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

44 Metascore

In a post-apocalyptic world where cities ride on wheels and consume each other to survive, two people meet in London and try to stop a conspiracy.

Director: Christian Rivers | Stars: Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae

Votes: 140,664 | Gross: $15.95M

Date Watched: 30th December 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

For every element that works in Mortal Engines, there's one that doesn't. The incredible worldbuilding is marred by a script so wooden and self-serious you wouldn't realise it was written by Peter Jackson and the people behind The Lord of the Rings, and interesting side characters are counteracted by dull leads. It has scale to spare, but it's an overall clunky film.

93. Anon (I) (2018)

TV-MA | 100 min | Crime, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Director: Andrew Niccol | Stars: Clive Owen, Afiya Bennett, Morgan Allen, Jeffrey Men

Votes: 48,735

Date Watched: 16th May 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

Proof that Andrew Niccol is still trapped in the creative rut that he fell into with In Time and The Host, Anon takes an interesting idea and makes a cold and sterile film.

94. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

PG-13 | 134 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

52 Metascore

Gellert Grindelwald plans to raise an army of wizards to rule over non-magical beings. In response, Newt Scamander's former professor, Albus Dumbledore, seeks his help to stop him.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Johnny Depp

Votes: 308,676 | Gross: $159.56M

Date Watched: 16th November 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

Although its production design is top-notch and all its performances are great (with the exception of Johnny Depp), J.K. Rowling's screenplay for The Crimes of Grindelwald is terrible, being overlong and over-complicated with barely any characters worth caring about.

95. The Nun (2018)

R | 96 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

A priest with a haunted past and a novice on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate the death of a young nun in Romania and confront a malevolent force in the form of a demonic nun.

Votes: 170,368 | Gross: $117.45M

Date Watched: 6th September 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir try their best, but The Nun's reliance on predictable jump-scares leaves the film devoid of surprise, and an assault on the senses.

96. Rampage (2018)

45 Metascore

When three different animals become infected with a dangerous pathogen, a primatologist and a geneticist team up to stop them from destroying Chicago.

Votes: 184,832 | Gross: $101.03M

Date Watched: 15th April 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

Shallow, noisy and ultimately boring, Rampage's distance from the games it's based on leads to another generic film about big CGI creatures destroying cities.

97. Red Sparrow (2018)

R | 140 min | Action, Drama, Thriller

53 Metascore

Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to 'Sparrow School,' a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.

Director: Francis Lawrence | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Joel Edgerton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Charlotte Rampling

Votes: 201,487 | Gross: $46.87M

Date Watched: 4th March 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

Meandering for the majority of its runtime, Red Sparrow does very little to stand out from other spy thrillers, and when it does, it's due to some of the most uncomfortable torture sequences I've seen.

98. Downsizing (2017)

R | 135 min | Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

A social satire in which a man realizes he would have a better life if he were to shrink himself to five inches tall, allowing him to live in wealth and splendor.

Votes: 124,409 | Gross: $24.45M

Date Watched: 28th January 2018 My Rating: 2.5/5

A great idea unfortunately squandered by weak execution. Matt Damon's performance is reflective of the film's biggest problem: it's directionless.

Votes: 134,046 | Gross: $68.42M

Date Watched: 14th July 2018 My Rating: 2/5

A woefully generic carbon copy of Die Hard lacking Dwayne Johnson's trademark charisma, Skyscraper is one of the most forgettable films of 2018 so far.

100. Life of the Party (I) (2018)

PG-13 | 105 min | Comedy

Director: Ben Falcone | Stars: Melissa McCarthy, Matt Walsh, Molly Gordon, Ben Falcone

Votes: 39,627 | Gross: $53.06M

Date Watched: 11th May 2018 My Rating: 2/5

Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone's third collaboration is also their third misfire. While I appreciate the absence of clichés, they lead to an absence of stakes.
