1. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

R | 95 min | Horror

72 Metascore

Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin, where they get more than they bargained for, discovering the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

Director: Drew Goddard | Stars: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz

Votes: 317,096 | Gross: $42.07M

An effective movie, yet wholly predictable as soon as the characters enter the basement of said Cabin in the Woods. The film's premise is an interesting concept, but like I said, the film raises questions that you can figure out the answers to early on, so when they spell it out at the end, it's not all that shocking. It's like going into The Sixth Sense knowing the twist. It's still enjoyable, but a large part of its entertainment value is lost. Regardless, It's a very fun movie, and some of the "cameos" at the end are great.

2. Friday the 13th (2009)

R | 97 min | Horror

34 Metascore

A group of young adults discover a boarded up Camp Crystal Lake, where they soon encounter Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears, Danielle Panabaker

Votes: 84,152 | Gross: $65.00M

Better than The Nightmare On Elm Street remake, that's for sure. Jason as a character is redeemed from the stupid iterations of past Friday the 13th sequels and he returns to his old stomping grounds. The film is exactly what I expected to see going into it, perhaps to a fault. The ending lacks any real punch, because again it plays out just how you think it would. A horror remake that respects the original, and doesn't besmirch the franchise name.

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

R | 95 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

35 Metascore

The spectre of a dead child rapist haunts the children of the parents who murdered him, stalking and killing them in their dreams.

Director: Samuel Bayer | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy

Votes: 82,060 | Gross: $63.08M

What a bad movie. Obviously Robert Englund can't play Freddy forever, but the guy they got instead is terrible. In fact, every aspect that this film apes from the original (which is a lot) was done better back in 1984. The characters (Freddy included) aren't interesting or memorable, the expanded back-story is unnecessary, and despite having the most serious characterization of Freddy in a while, the few one-liners he does throw out are cringe-worthy. There's so much that's being rehashed and so little in the way of inventiveness that you'll have a harder time staying awake than the characters. It's watchable all the way through, but there's nothing to come back for.

4. Halloween (1978)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

78 Metascore

Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield to kill again.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tony Moran, Nancy Kyes

Votes: 181,114 | Gross: $47.00M

The performances by Pleasance and Curtis are excellent. The music score is one of the most memorable and effective in the history of cinema. The villain is fascinating and iconic. It doesn't need a huge body count or cheap scares, but utilizes the medium of film, both aurally and visually to create a truly chilling film. This is quite possibly my favorite horror movie of all time.

5. Halloween II (1981)

R | 92 min | Horror

40 Metascore

While Sheriff Brackett and Dr. Loomis hunt for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to hospital, and the serial killer is not far behind her.

Director: Rick Rosenthal | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, Charles Cyphers, Jeffrey Kramer

Votes: 58,775 | Gross: $25.53M

Despite the big reveal, which changes the way you look at the previous film, this is a decent continuation of Halloween. Laurie doesn't have much to do, and the characters here are basically just sitting ducks waiting to be killed, but it's still a good film. Michael Myers is still the methodical murderer, but this time he has motivation and a seemingly unquenchable bloodlust. The sense of creepiness he had in part one is all but gone, but what hasn't changed is that it's still a delight to watch Loomis hunt him down. The synth heavy score puts a minor twist on the first movie's score and it works well.

6. Halloween 5 (1989)

R | 96 min | Horror, Thriller

31 Metascore

One year after the events of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), the Shape returns to Haddonfield once again in an attempt to kill his now-mute niece.

Director: Dominique Othenin-Girard | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, Beau Starr

Votes: 26,770 | Gross: $11.64M

Garbage. It totally ruins the ending of part 4, has a goofy looking mask, and the characters are faceless and interchangeable. The two best characters from part 4 are shoved to the side to make way for an obnoxious teen named Tina, and even Michael Myers himself is fairly boring in this installment. The Myers house has magically grown and now part of it has a conical roof, which makes no sense. Also, the ending to this movie is abysmal.

7. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

R | 88 min | Horror, Thriller

43 Metascore

Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece on Halloween. Can Dr. Loomis stop him?

Director: Dwight H. Little | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris, George P. Wilbur

Votes: 34,233 | Gross: $17.77M

The opening credits sequence does a great job establishing the autumn, Halloween feel, which is a consistent plus throughout the movie. Loomis is back and we are treated to Jamie and Rachel, two likable leads. This isn't a particularly innovative or creative movie, but it gave the fans what they wanted, more Michael Myers, and didn't fumble the ball in doing so. His new look, both in stature and mask, are a disappointment, and he has become less cunning in favor of a lumbering brute approach, but it's still entertaining to watch The Shape wreak havoc on Haddonfield again. Plus it has a really great ending.

8. The Blair Witch Project (1999)

R | 81 min | Horror, Mystery

81 Metascore

Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

Directors: Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez | Stars: Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, Joshua Leonard, Bob Griffin

Votes: 207,768 | Gross: $140.54M

This movie is excellent. While many attribute its success to the marketing campaign, which is undeniably true to an extent, word of mouth can do a lot to shoot a movie down fast at the box office. However most people, at least the ones who didn't get nausea from the camera, found it genuinely creepy, the kind of horror that works because it makes you wonder, "What would I do in that situation?" It excels because of it's simplicity, contrasting the uneventful daytime with the frightening nighttime. The deepening sense of despair the hikers feel comes across well and because of the documentary format, we only ever see what they do, putting us firmly in their shoes.
