I am sure most of you will not agree with the number one movie on this list. But Mammootty was just sensational in Sangham. I do not know many of the films he made in the early 80s. I am sure some of them should have been on this list. And there is only one film from his post-2000s filmography. I have not watched Sukritham which I have heard is a classic.

1. Sangham (1988)

This film rules! Mammootty and Thilakan were great as a father-son duo. Mammootty always excels in Christian roles. The long fight with Prayikyar Appa was great too.
2. Thaniyavartanam (1987)

A man thinks he is going crazy as a result of the rituals and superstitions in his highly religious family. This was hailed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan as one of the best films of the year.
3. Sreedharante Onnam Thirumurivu (1987)
Comedy, Drama, Romance
Sreedharan, a simpleton tries to impress his nephew 'Ashwathi' and decides to marry her, but under several circumstances he came to know her tragic past and helps her.
Wonderful morally repugnant comedy about a middle aged mechanic desperately trying to marry his beautiful but arrogant and obnoxious modern cousin. Sreenivasan as the Chinese cook was outrageous.
4. Utharam (1989)
One fine morning, not any different from every other day, a promising poet shoots herself. Leaving no trace of motive, her husband's best friend and journalist, Balu embarks on a journey to find the truth.
Nice murder mystery though the ending ruined it a little bit. Suparna Anand was adorable while Sukumaran was great as the desolate husband.
5. Nair Saab (1989)
A new batch of trainees arrives at the army training center (SAT) situated near border in Kashmir. Their trainer is Major Nair Saab (Mammootty) who is a man known for his hard-and-fast training strategies.
The first half was a slap stick comedy. The second half was unnecessarily melodramatic. Great entertainment, nonetheless.
6. Mrigaya (1989)

A remote village in Kerala hires a hunter to kill a ferocious leopard.
Just wonderful, Mammootty in a truly unique role as Varunni, the tiger hunter. It really is a unique I.V.Sasi film.
7. Kottayam Kunjachan (1990)
Action, Comedy, Drama
The story revolves around Kottayam' Kunjachan (Mammotty), an erstwhile thug, has just been released from jail.
Truly hilarious action movie about warring Christian families. Sukumaran and his gang were great too. Their entry in the movie (in a jeep) was sensational and was one of the highlights of my childhood movie going experiences.
8. Oru CBI Diary Kurippu (1988)
137 min | Mystery, Thriller
Prabhakara Varma is called upon to investigate the death of Omana, the daughter-in-law of a local businessman. It looks like a suicide but, Varma is sure that is not so.
Excellent murder mystery. Mammootty was brilliant as Sethu Ram Iyer.

A superior murder mystery compared to Oru CBI Diary Kurippu, but Mammootty is not really the central character. The film has some excellent songs and features sensational performances by Bharat Gopi and Jalaja.

Police brutality! But Mammootty was sensational as Inspector Balram. Nobody can play a cop like Mammootty.
11. Kathodu Kathoram (1985)

Shobana was so adorable back in the day. The "oru madhura kinavin" song is a classic. Mamootty was playing mature roles even as early as 83.
13. Kanamarayathu (1984)

A young girl who is brought up in an orphanage starts college in a different city where she meets her sponsor (whom she doesn't recognize) - a chronic bachelor and another young man who is all smitten by her.
Tale of jealousy, Mammootty was excellent as an older man jealous of the budding friendship between Suhasini (a teacher) and Rahman (her student).
14. Vidheyan (1994)

Thommy is a loyal and obedient slave of his aggressive and tyrannical master Bhaskara. He serves his master so faithfully that he goes to the extent of killing Bhaskara's wife on his orders.
One of Mammootty's best villains (he hasn't played too many). He really nailed the character.

Mammootty and Naseruddin Shah in a film directed by T.V.Chandran. There is a great scene when Mada's woman (whom he couldn't protect) asks him to go along with her.
16. Golanthara Vartha (1993)
The film revolves around an active social worker, Rameshan Nair. He was leading a happy family life but problems begin when a girl enters his life.
Just a treat. Sathyan Anthikad really captured the mood of the Kerala village very well.
17. Kauravar (1992)

A killer protects his daughter from his vengeful group of criminals
Excellent revenge flick. Though it became quite sentimental towards the end.

An uneducated fisherman wants his daughter to be educated and become a doctor but his dreams get shattered when she falls in love with her childhood friend.
One of Mammootty's most famous films where he plays a fisherman who finds it hard to deal with the illiterate lover of his daughter.

The movie narrates the story of an underworld Don's upraise and fall.
Stylish underworld flick. Its a bit high up in the list, but the film was a novelty back in the day.

I bet not many of you have seen this film. It was a colossal flop. But it is a solid and eerie murder mystery if you ask me.
21. Charithram (1989)
Philip is desperate to prove that Raju is not his brother but a lookalike and an imposter. Together with his trusted friends, he repeatedly tries to test him in order to expose him.
Really intriguing, albeit far fetched thriller.
22. Thanthram (1988)
Action, Mystery, Thriller
The mysterious demise of her husband sees the widow fighting against his family who are after his enormous wealth.
Mammootty as a geeky lawyer.
23. August 1 (1988)
A Crime Branch Detective fights the clock to prevent a looming assassination attempt on the Kerala Chief Minister's life.
Mammootty as Perumal, another of his badass cop roles. Captain Raju was also great as the villain. Sukumaran and Sunny were stellar in their supporting roles.

One of the better films in the post-2000 dark ages of Malayalam cinema. Though Mammootty is the only good thing in the whole film.

Not my favorite Shaji Kailas film. But its worth a watch. Mammootty carries this ridiculous film on his shoulders.
