1. Californication (2007–2014)
TV-MA | 28 min | Comedy, Drama
A writer tries to juggle his career, his relationship with his daughter and his ex-girlfriend, as well as his appetite for beautiful women.
Hank does the craziest stuff, he always gets laid and always gets in trouble with his baby-mama and his daughter. His agent "Runcle" is usually his partner in crime, though Hank has a tendency to turn even the simplest of situations into a sex filled, cop bashing nose-busting adventure. If Doctor House has some Bukowski like characteristics, Hank is his modern day incarnation.
2. Castle (2009–2016)
TV-14 | 43 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama
After a serial killer imitates the plots of his novels, successful mystery novelist Richard "Rick" Castle receives permission from the Mayor of New York City to tag along with an NYPD homicide investigation team for research purposes.
Richard is fun. I loved Nathan Fillion from Firefly so I gave this show a shot, you should too.
3. The Mentalist (2008–2015)
TV-14 | 43 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
A famous "psychic" outs himself as a fake, and starts working as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation so he can find "Red John", the madman who killed his wife and daughter.
I had seen some episodes on TV and of course seeing mixed episodes doesn't do anything justice. I decided to view the whole thing and I think Patrick is a character I won't forget.
5. Prison Break (2005–2017)
TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Crime, Drama
Due to a political conspiracy, an innocent man is sent to death row and his only hope is his brother, who makes it his mission to deliberately get himself sent to the same prison in order to break the both of them out, from the inside.
6. SGU Stargate Universe (2009–2011)
Not Rated | 43 min | Drama, Sci-Fi
Trapped on an Ancient spaceship billions of light-years from home, a group of soldiers and civilians struggle to survive and find their way back to Earth.
8. Justified (2010–2015)
TV-MA | 44 min | Action, Crime, Drama
Old-school U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns in eastern Kentucky.
Again a strong male lead makes the show work. This guy is awesome, a cowboy in modern day America sounds ridiculous, in the end you love the Southern accents, the attitude and the whole show.
9. House M.D. (2004–2012)
TV-14 | 44 min | Drama, Mystery
An antisocial maverick doctor who specializes in diagnostic medicine does whatever it takes to solve puzzling cases that come his way using his crack team of doctors and his wits.
Another strong male lead. Doctor House is smart, witty, rude and has a Bucowski quality about him. Especially the Season 7 finale was so in line with what the whole show built that I was actually impressed they did this. Generally shows have matured to the point they really do hurt main characters and face grim realities.
10. Game of Thrones (2011– )
TV-MA | 57 min | Action, Adventure, Drama
Nine noble families fight for control over the mythical lands of Westeros, while an ancient enemy returns after being dormant for thousands of years.
Another example of making characters realistically die, face situations etc. Many great characters, most of them replaced by the end of the season, it's awesome to know that characters aren't invinsible.
11. Dexter (2006–2013)
TV-MA | 53 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
By day, mild-mannered Dexter is a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But at night, he is a serial killer who only targets other murderers.
Yet another male lead. Dexter is also smart, strong, but just in his own world and by his own code. A trend I have noticed in quite a few shows lately. His ability to keep his cool - his is a sociopath after all - has gotten him out of so many situations I can't even count. Although not in real danger - the show is named after the character - you really believe he is threatened and get invested in his situation.
12. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)
TV-MA | 49 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine in order to secure his family's future.
Starts out boring, gets so heavy and on the edge you can't even imagine. Again strong male lead, although his character is brought out due to life altering events, he still does what needs to be done and follows his personal code to the letter (well almost).
13. Weeds (2005–2012)
TV-MA | 28 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama
When a suburban mother turns to dealing marijuana in order to maintain her privileged lifestyle after her husband dies, she finds out just how addicted her entire neighborhood already is.
Finally strong female lead, though a lot of her qualities are commonly associated with men, "Bianca" has sex with various characters during the series, she is strong, sometimes reckless and although she makes more mistakes than her male counterparts in other shows, she always protects her "cubs".
14. Supernatural (2005– )
TV-14 | 44 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Two brothers follow their father's footsteps as "hunters", fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds, including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth.
Initial episodes were fun, I saw a few random ones and decided to see more. The initial 5 year cycle they had planned was awesome. It gets grittier, both Sam and Dean deal with tough choices, humor throughout, but ultimatelly they sacrifice everything for man kind. After season 5 the direction of the show wasn't really planned out, but it has turned out pretty epic, though I can't really see where it's going. The larger arc isn't as strong now, but that's what happens when you have prevented the Apocalypse (what can be more Epic).
15. NCIS (2003– )
TV-14 | 60 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
The cases of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service's Washington, D.C. Major Case Response Team, led by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
Agent Gibbs: another strong male lead, clever, strong, uncompromising. He has lost his wife and daughter as did Patrick from the Mentalist, this leads to some pretty intense moments. He also follows his code. Although the production quality isn't on par with other top shows, it's characters make up for that loss.
16. True Blood (2008–2014)
TV-MA | 55 min | Drama, Fantasy, Mystery
Telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill, a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.
Amazing high quality production. Top characters, vampires, love triangles, werewolves. Sookie is the lead, though she is supported by more than enough clever, strong hero-type males and they all want her. Every girl's dream.
17. Criminal Minds (2005– )
TV-14 | 42 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery
The cases of the F.B.I. Behavioral Analysis Unit (B.A.U.), an elite group of profilers who analyze the nation's most dangerous serial killers and individual heinous crimes in an effort to anticipate their next moves before they strike again.
20. Mad Men (2007–2015)
TV-14 | 47 min | Drama

27. Firefly (2002–2003)

34. Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)
TV-14 | 44 min | Action, Adventure, Drama
When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
35. Torchwood (2006–2011)
