Of course if you have not seen yet, 2017 started with nominations for these coming of age flicks:

Lion - [link]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3741834[/link] So far Juicy's choice for Best Picture at the Oscars, and this is fair as Juicy usually sees all the best pic noms. So far this IS the best. Have not seen Moonlight or a few others, yet. Juicy is fair on Oscars and will see all, if his opinion changes, will let you know. But so far none of them are meh. Really enjoyed most. LA LA Land, not sure I enjoyed, as much as respected (music is so amazing, as acting, as are the dreams that come true, and don't, like life.)

Moonlight - [link]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4975722[/link]

Also the animated French coming of age movie up for Best Animated

My Life as a Zucchini - [link]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2321405[/link]

For what its worth, finally released.....in a two part dvd (the first part is worthless)

Quiltys' Recommended Reading:

Lo's Diary - Pia Pera: [link]http://www.amazon.com/Los-Diary-Pia-Pera/dp/B001G8WAYY[/link] From Quilty - "Don't trust reviews in the mainstream press. This is a very funny book, not heavy at all, presenting a plausible picture of Lolita's and Humbert's relationship from Lolita's perspective. Not only is it well written, but Pera's book overall is a gleeful corrective of the literary revisionist view that Lolita was a passive victim of male lust."

What We Don't Know About Children - Simona Vinci: [link]http://www.amazon.com/What-Dont-Know-about-Children/dp/0375404112[/link] From Quilty - "Under the spell of two shadowy pedophiles, 15-year-old Mirko convinces two girls, age 10, and two boys, ages 10 and 13, to join him in a secret summer sex ring in this highly unlikely, but well-told, story about childhood immorality by Italian writer Simona Vinci. The setting is, of course, a perfect excuse to describe in detail what child-sex, and sex between a child and an almost-adult, must be like. And up to a point, it is very realistic. The two girls, Greta and Martina, are emotionally well-delineated. Greta is passive, wants to please, doesn’t complain. Martina, on the other hand, is more assertive and knows exactly what she wants. The author describes them within their families and among their friends in a convincing way, successfully painting a highly visual and lively portrait of each. But then there’s the matter of Mirko and the sunglasses-bedecked, white-sedan-driving pedophiles who ply him dirty magazines of increasing disrepute to spur on the group’s escapades. And so, the innocent games turn nasty, and rush headlong toward tragedy. Not for the squeamish."

Quiltys' Favorite Photography:

Jock Sturges - Jock Sturges: [link]http://www.amazon.com/Jock-Sturges/dp/3931141306[/link] From Quilty - "The book that 'horrified' Randall Terry and earned Barnes & Noble prosecutions in Alabama and Tennessee is back! This is a "retrospective" of Sturges' work organized for a show at the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt. Many of the images will be familiar, having appeared in Last Day of Summer, Radiant Identities, and Evolution of Grace. However, there are many images here which have not been previously published and quite a few studies of Sturges' subjects as they mature. Sturges' work hovers on the edge of the erotic, without making a commitment to desire. (One wonders what direction Sturges' work will take after this, his fourth monograph.)"

David Hamilton - A Place in the Sun - [link]http://www.amazon.com/Place-Sun-David-Hamilton/dp/1854104314[/link] From Quilty - "This latest volume from the unrivaled master of teenage eroticism seems mainly intended to document his landscapes and travel, but what's the point of traveling if you can't visit (or bring along) beautiful girls? So there are around 66 images of girls (most mid-adolescent) who, well, would make perfect travel companions."

Jed Fielding - City of Secrets: photographs of Naples: [link]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0965888703[/link] From Quilty - "Jed Fielding's photographs are part of a long-standing tradition: traveling to foreign locations to explore new terrain. These photographs deal with intimacies: the tender touching of persons and the proud display of bodies. Fieldings images are an homage to a Mediterranean culture at once humble and hazardous, a place of tight extended families living underfoot, and a community famous for its petty thievery and the Camorra, the local and fierce crime syndicate. For the past twenty years, Naples' narrow streets and crumbling tenements have been the setting for Fielding's perpetual street opera, where parents and grandparents, children, young couples, friends, prostitutes, and criminals enact the dramas of the day. There, in the cramped passageways, events transpire as children play and adults travel to work, shop for meals, do their laundry, gather for conversation. Fielding is particularly attentive to the street life of children. "

"Quilty has certain tastes y'know."

!WARNING! Due to the nature of the movies, parents should be aware of the content of these productions. Many movies here, even though acted by children, have violence, profane language, and child nudity. Most U.S. parents do not give a s*beep*t about language and violence so Juicy will designate those movies showing the sick human child bodies and sexual content that should be avoided by placing a "H" for Hell on the comments for the movie.

HH" "From CVMC - Three girls (Monica Broeke, Emmanuelle Beart, Anja Shute) in their mid to late teens find themselves on a small island once a storm proves too much for their boat. There, they meet some boys their age who wish to court them, but the youngest (Monica Broeke) has her sights set on an older man; trouble is, he is happily married. H" "From pang-5 (Prague, Czech Republic) – With no way out can the human soul survive?

This film shows things I have only heard about. I am a 'rich westerner' who,by accident of birth, was lucky enough to avoid such things. This film shows the hypocrisy of good intentions and how they can be warped in the hands of truly evil people. Yes, they DO exist and Sincai (Pete Poslethwaite?) is merely a remarkable example, selling the medical supplies the hospital receives and dealing in weapons.

The grinding down of the human soul in poverty, apathy and violence can be seen in nearly each frame. How can the children at this hospital survive? The truth is many don't. They had one hope-to be marketed by Sincai to rich, western couples looking for kids to adopt and many kids have been sold away from their sisters and their brothers into the arms of these misguided people. Into their lives drops the English-speaking Brute (Schweiger)who is the promise of 'rich western' salvation in the flesh. The difference is that he LIVES with them and very obviously cares about them, if in a rough way. He is helped by two longer term inmates at this insane place- the alcoholic violinist doctor Babits (Hurt, always worth every penny, such a lovingly hard-working actor) and the beautiful and dedicated nurse Mara (played by Ida Jablonska.)

The basic plot here (I won't give more as I WANT you to see this film and can't spoil it) is that Brute feigns love for a young Gypsy girl who has a heart valve condition that will likely kill her. In order to save her, he and Babits and Mara have to please Sincai in every way in order to get the right medical supplies and medicines to do the operation that will save her life. In order to raise money for this operation, however, he will sell her younger 'brother' Jorgu. He is ALL she really has.

Please see this film. I especially think you should see it if you are in the least interested in adopting and 'saving' an eastern European orphan. Think, think and think again.

32. Neco z Alenky (1988)

Not Rated | 86 min | Animation, Adventure, Fantasy

A surrealistic revision of Alice in Wonderland.

Director: Jan Svankmajer | Stars: Kristýna Kohoutová, Camilla Power

Votes: 9,642

From Quilty - Alice

(Czech/Suisse, 1988; dir. Jan Svankmajer.) Animated, but with a live Alice, this is the best version made of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Svankmajer's hallucinatory interpretation adds an element of decay to the tale which I found appropriate. He plays up the anthropomorphism and randon violence, key aspects of Lewis Carroll's tale, as well as the contrasts of scale experienced by a child who moves from the fantasy world of dolls to the grown-up world. Lovely linen display when Alice kicks Bill the Lizard up the chimney. The animation, creatures and cinematography are all exceptional. Above all, the little girl, 7-year-old Kristyna Kohoutova, is wonderful.

From Juicy - ALSO, be sure to check out Lewis Carrolls' photography! Includes pictures of the REAL Alice!
