1. Kon-Tiki (1950)

Approved | 77 min | Documentary

A documentary about the Kon-Tiki expedition of the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl.

Director: Thor Heyerdahl | Stars: Thor Heyerdahl, Herman Watzinger, Erik Hesselberg, Knut Haugland

Votes: 2,088

What a Great storytelling! Thor Heyerdahl wanted to prove the possibility of migration from South America to Polynesia, and the result was this exciting Academy award winning documentary about brave scientific adventurers on a 101 days 8.000 km raft mission. The experts were sure they would not survive; the balsa tree fleet should sink, waves would wash everything overboard, fishing would not give food, they could not get rescue. But Heyerdahl was right. Life on the float seemes both serious and charming, with Heyerdahl downplaying all dangerous threats in good 50's style. Better, more charming and far more exciting than the OK (and Academy awards nominee) dramatization of 2012.

"Elling - Me, my friend and I". A warm comedy-drama about Elling, a 40 year old sensitive, would-be poet and Kjell Bjarne, a gentle giant and female-obsessed virgin in his 40s who are released from a state institution and provided with a state-funded apartment to live on their own. Initially, the simple act of going around the corner for groceries is a challenge. Through a friendship born of desperate dependence, Elling and Kjell Bjarne discover they can not only survive on the outside, they can thrive. «Elling» is a phenomenom in Norway, with a very readable series of four books, three movies and theater performances. Last put up on Broadway, but lasted only for a week. Petter Næss has directed the American movie «Mozart and the Whale», that didn't do too well. He has directed several warm comedies in Norway, but none as good as this one.

3. Junk Mail (1997)

83 min | Comedy, Thriller

A lazy postman puts his nose where it doesn't belong.

Director: Pål Sletaune | Stars: Robert Skjærstad, Andrine Sæther, Per Egil Aske, Eli Anne Linnestad

Votes: 1,919

"Junk Mail". A black comedy about a bored mailman, Roy, in a dirty world (Oslo) who reads the letters he is supposed to deliver and sticks his nose where it doesn't belong. He finds the key to an apartment left in one of his mailboxes. Investigating the apartment, he falls in love with its inhabitant, Line. But Line has other "friends", involved in dangerous affairs. After Junk Mail, Sletaune was contacted by Hollywood to direct a movie called «American Beauty». He wasn't interessted and it went to Sam Mendes... Junk Mail is thoroughly done in all aspects. Enjoy!

Trapped in a tiny hut together as the arctic winter sets in, a complex and intense love/hate relationship develops between Randbek and Larsen, who are more similar than either would like to admit. A powerful psychological and physical drama set against stunningly bleak arctic scenery. Moland have since made good films as the UK movie «Aberdeen» (2000), an American movie «The beautiful Country» (2004) and «A somewhat gentle man» (2010). "Zero Kelvin" is Listed in «1001 movies you must see before you die».

"Pinchcliff Grand Prix". One for the whole family: 100 miles north, a bit east and up, is Flåklypa... home of bicycle repairman Reodor Felgen and his two assistants - Solan Gundersen, morning bird and natural born optimist, and Ludvig who is a true pessimist. Sponsored by oil sheik Ben Redic Fy Fazan, they build the car "Il Tempo Gigante" and the race of the decade is a fact. «Flåklypa Grand Prix» is as close as a movie can become a National treasure. Every Norwegian has seen it and it is fun for all ages. The puppet techology is quite impressive. Also listed in «1001 movies you must see before you die».

"The bothersome man". Forty-year-old Andreas arrives in a strange city with no memory of how he got there. He is presented with a job, an apartment - even a wife. But before long, Andreas feels that something is wrong. Andreas makes an attempt to escape the city, but he discovers there's no way out. Andreas meets Hugo, who has found a crack in a wall in his cellar. Beautiful music streams out from the crack. Maybe it leads to "the other side"? A new plan for escape is hatched. The bothersome man is a rare movie, delicate and estethic, funny, but with distance and people in a feelless world.

The past returns when his adult son dating from his Swedish visit, Konrad, suddenly comes to live with them. Soon Moe is about to discover that three is indeed a crowd. Bent Hamer is an auteur and one of Norways internationally honoured directors with movies like «O'Horten» and «Kitchen stories». "Eggs" is listed in «1001 movies you must see before you die».

"troubledWATER". A young man is released from prison and hired as a church organist. He is recognized by the mother of the victim and she freaks out. The movie is about redemption and forgiveness; about starting over after a heinous crime has been committed and about lives gone wrong, and lives damaged by evil. troubledWATER has some fantastic organ music, great performances, cinematography, and direction by Erik Poppe, who previously directed «Hawai Oslo», which also is very recommendable and could as well be on this list.

However, the Nazi-zombie battalion haunting the mountains surrounding the aptly have other plans. If you watch it on vaccation, I hope outdoor toilets not are the option...
