- Bishop Heahmund is wracked with guilt as he fights to renounce his passions. Viking will clash with Saxon on the battlefield leaving a key figure lost in the balance.
- In Kattegat, the insane and evil Ivar burns the Seer's corpse, covering up his murder. Bishop Heahmund has a dream and renounces his love for Lagherta in the name of God. Ubbe plans the Battle of Wessex, and the Saxons win King Harald Finehair and the Northmen but with one important loss. - Ivar's men covertly cremate the Seer he murdered, while he publicly promises to bring the people responsible to justice and swears his divinity won't bother any subject, just 'allow them pride'. Only Hvitserk dares doubt Ivar's and Freydis's child's divinity. In England, Heahmund's vision of hell makes him renounce bitterly disappointed Lagertha. Before joining the army, Alfred has Lord Cyneheard arrested for treason and Judith tortures him to reveal all conspirators. Harald's army arrives in Wessex. Ubbe promises Harald a large buy-off, but Magnus arrives to join Harald as son of Ragnar, inadvertently alerting him that Ubbe and Alfred set a trap. Harald's army, cut off by a fire started by Ubbe, charges the English, who painstakingly prevail, killing jarl Olavsonn, but Gunnhild kills a wounded Heahmund and injures Bjorn, before becoming his captive. In the chaos Lagertha vanishes. As Alfred celebrates his victory, Judith informs him that Aethelred is key to the nobles' conspiracy.—KGF Vissers
- Ivar has his men covertly cremate the Seer's body. Hvitserk visits the Seer's home and finds traces of blood on his bed, where he was murdered. Hvitserk confronts Ivar who had been claiming that his men told him that the Seer had left Kattegat. Hvitserk says that he found blood in the Seer's bed and wants Ivar to find the murderers. Ivar publicly promises to bring the people responsible to justice. Ivar asks the people to rejoice as they are now be ruled by a living God. And soon, his wife will provide him with a divine child.
Ivar installs statues of himself all over Kattegat.
In England, Heahmund has a vision of Hell, and the Lord tells him to renounce his sinful ways, or he would never see the Lord's divine face. This drives him to renounce Lagertha, who accuses Heahmund of never having loved her. Alfred promises the Vikings that if they defeat Harald, he will grant the East Anglia lands to them, promised to them by his grandfather Ecbert. Ubbe has designed a catapult that the Franks used against the Vikings in Paris.
Torvi asks Ubbe to wear his arm ring and his cross as her prepares for battle. Ubbe tells Alfred that his plan will work and asks Alfred to trust him. Ubbe says that to win the battle Alfred would have to risk killing his own men.
Alfred has Lord Cyneheard (Malcolm Douglas) arrested for treason and Judith tortures him for information about the conspiracy. Judith wants to know the names of the people Cyneheard conspired with.
Harald's army arrives in Wessex. Ubbe goes to speak with Harald, offering a large sum of money for him to leave. Harald says that Alfred will never deliver on his promise to Ubbe and the others as such promises have been made before. Harald says that if Ubbe wants the lands, he would have to fight for them. He says that land is never settled by negotiation, and always by blood. Harald is shocked to find that Ubbe has converted to Christianity. He asks Ubbe to return the next day to hear his final answer on Ubbe's offer.
Later Magnus arrives to join Harald's army, inadvertently alerting him that Ubbe and Alfred have set a trap. Harald realizes that while he was waiting for Ubbe to arrive, Alfred has moved his entire army around their flanks and have chosen their preferred battleground.
Harald's army, cut off by a fire started by Ubbe that encircles his army, charges the English. The English take the upper hand, killing Jarl Olavsonn. Ubbe presses his catapults into service, raining fire on the Vikings.
The Vikings are driven back as Harald orders a retreat, but not before Gunnhild kills a wounded Heahmund and injures Bjorn, before being taken captive. Lagertha had seen Heahmund being injured but did not go to his aid and allowed him to be killed. Aethelred saves Alfred's life in battle.
In the chaos, Lagertha vanishes. Alfred publicly acknowledges the role of the Viking warriors in Wessex's victory. As Alfred celebrates his victory, Judith informs him that Aethelred is leader of the conspiracy.
Harald leaves Wessex in his fleet, along with Magnus.
