Commando Grayson Hunt, his team, and their evil boss General Sarrano, whom they want dead, crash land on the planet Stygia, a former elite resort now overrun with killer plants, feral cannibal gangs and monsters with acid for blood.

Bulletstorm takes place in the 26th century, where the Confederation of Planets are protected by a secret black-ops army called Dead Echo. The story follows space pirate Grayson Hunt, voiced by Steve Blum, and his cyborg partner Ishi Sato, who were both dishonorably discharged from Dead Echo after they were betrayed by their commanding officer, General Sarrano. Ten years later, after a spontaneous and liquor-induced attempt to take revenge on the General and his forces, Hunt's and Sato's ship crash-landed on the planet Stygia, a former resort planet now overrun with meat-eating plants, feral mutant tribes, criminals, and Godzilla-sized monsters. Hunt and Sato search for a way off the planet, all while doing battle with the General's forces, who also crashed on Stygia after Hunt's attack. Along the way, they're joined by Trishka Novak, a foul-mouthed woman with a dark past who also knows her way around a gun. One of the locations they travel to on Stygia is the city of Elysium, formerly a Vegas-like adult paradise.—ZombieTime

Bulletstorm takes place in the 26th century, where the Confederation of Planets uses a secret elite black-ops team called Dead Echo for both general protection and their dirty work. The story follows Dead Echo's former leader turned space pirate Grayson Hunt (voiced by Steve Blum), and his old teammates Ishi Sato, Rell Julian, and Dr. Whit Oliver, who all deserted the army along with him after discovering the horrible truth - that Dead Echo was actually a death squad run by their twisted, foul-mouthed and sadistic commanding officer, Star General Sarrano, for only one purpose - to suppress anyone who opposes him or the Confederation. For ten years later, after a spontaneous and liquor-induced attempt to take revenge on the General and his forces by crashing his ship into General's, both Hunt and Sarrano's ships end up crash-landing on the hellish planet of Stygia, a former elite resort planet now overrun with giant killer plants, savage feral mutant tribes, warring cannibal gangs, and Godzilla-sized monsters that lay dormant under the planet's crust. Hunt and Sato search for a way off the planet, all while doing battle with the General's forces. Rell and Whit are soon killed by the mutants, while Ishi survives the attack by being turned into an incomplete cyborg which has the unfortunate consequence of allowing the A.I. program that runs the cyborg part of his body to temporarily take over Ishi's mind as well and try to kill Hunt, blaming his recklessness for the bloody predicament they've found themselves in. Along the way, Hunt and Ishi are joined by Trishka Novak, a foul-mouthed woman who knows her way around a gun, and who also belong to Dead Echo but still doesn't know what they truly were, nor that Hunt killed her father on one of his missions for the squad.

One of the locations the three protagonists end up traveling to on Stygia is the city of Elysium, formerly a Vegas-like adult paradise. Eventually, the gang learns that prisoners were used to run the place, which led to their rebellion after they were exposed to toxic waste, a byproduct of the planet's solar shields. In the process, they also destroyed the mechanism necessary for the shields to work, so the planet quickly became a nightmarish mutant wasteland and the perfect training ground for Sarrano's men. However, the order eventually came to Sarrano to finally destroy the planet and cover everything up. With this in mind, both the team and Sarrano are forced to join up to survive, even after Sarrano seemingly pushes Trishka to death. In an attempt to escape the planet before Sarrano's ticking DNA time bomb eradicates all life on it, the team reaches Sarrano's escape ship, only for Sarrano to trick them and leave them to die. Trishka survives however, and helps Hunt and Ishi reach Sarrano before his ship can escape the orbit. Both Sarrano and Ishi die in their final duel, while Trishka and Hunt manage to reach the escape pods and become the only survivors of Stygia, as the DNA bomb detonates as planned and kills the entire planet in a apocalyptic explosion. However, the two realize that Sarrano has actually survived as well, and is now a cyborg, just like Ishi, whom Sarrano took with him and is now alive again but under the complete control of the killer A.I. The game ends with Hunt's promise to take his revenge against Sarrano no matter what, but the sequels meant to continue the story were never produced due to the game's unsatisfactory sales numbers.
