Romance heats up between Rikki and Zane, and Cleo and Emma find out, making Cleo demand that Rikki choose between her mer-friends and her new boy.

Rikki and Zane begin secretly dating but Cleo and Emma catch them together at the movies. Cleo and Emma demand that she stop seeing Zane, forcing her to choose between him and them. Rikki refuses saying that true friends would never make her choose.—Anonymous

Emma and Cleo are suspicious of Rikki when they see her apparently out on a date with Zane. After her friends pester her about it, Rikki finally confesses that she and Zane are going out, and Emma and Cleo, fearing that Rikki will tell Zane their secret, tell her to dump him. Rikki refuses, and she and the others fall out; but when Zane's father unveils plans to turn Mako Island into a holiday resort, and Zane fails to stand up to him, Rikki begins to wonder whether she made the wrong choice.

Rikki's date with Zane becomes a subject of speculation for Emma and Cleo. Concerned about Zane's trustfulness, Emma gives Rikki an ultimatum: her and Cleo or Zane. It's a choice Rikki resents being asked to make and it quickly drives a wedge between the girls. Harrison Bennett's unveiling of his plans to develop Mako Island into a sprawling resort complex realigns feelings as Emma joins Rikki's vocal opposition and Zane takes a stand against his father. Cleo attempts to liberate herself by thinning her wardrobe.
