- In his quest to collect Gym Badges, Ash heads for Cerulean City, intending to confront the Cerulean gym leader. For some reason, Misty expresses a desire to avoid Cerulean City and disappears along the way. Upon entering the gym, Ash and Pikachu are entranced by a synchronized swimming show being performed by three beautiful sisters, unsure if he has really found another Gym. The three reveal that they are the gym leaders but have since converted the Gym into an aquarium and water show, and offer to just give Ash the Cascade Badge, but Misty appears once more, revealing that she is also one of the gym leaders and will battle Ash in lieu of her three older sisters. However, Team Rocket disrupts the battle in an attempt to steal all of the Gym's Pokémon. However, Ash and his Pokémon blast Team Rocket. The three sisters award Ash with the Cascade Badge for protecting the gym.
- Ash and his friends arrive in Cerulean City, where Ash wants to try to get a second badge, by defeating the gym leader. Misty tries to talk Ash into go to Vermilion City instead, but Ash wont change his mind.
The next day when Ash and Brock are walking down the street (Misty has left them), they find out from Officer Jenny that there has been a burglary at a machine store. When Ash and Pikachu arrive at the gym, they find out that instead of there being one gym leader, there are three. They are called the Cerulean City Sisters and they say that they are tired of battling, so they offer Ash the Cascade Badge without a battle. Ash isnt sure whether he should take it, but before he can make up his mind, Misty stops them and explains to Ash that she is the fourth Cerulean City Sister and she wants a Pokemon battle with Ash, so the battle begins.
Ash chooses Pikachu, but it doesnt want to battle a friend, so Ash instead goes with Butterfree. Misty selects her Pokemon, a Staryu. Staryu starts out by trying to tackle Butterfree, but misses it and Butterfree uses Stun Spore. Ash thinks that he has won, but Staryu recovers and the battle continues, but eventually Staryu wins by knocking Butterfree out of the air and taking it under water. Ash calls back Butterfree and then chooses Pidgeotto. Misty then calls back her Staryu and chooses Staryus evolved form Starmie.
The battle doesnt last very long and Pidgeotto is about to win, but Team Rocket interrupts the battle with a giant vacuum. Ash figures out that they must have been the thieves that had stolen some stuff from the machine store. Team Rocket tries to suck up all the Pokemon in the gym, but loose when Pikachu uses its Thunderbolt electrocuting Team Rocket and sending them blasting off again.
Even though the match between Ash and Misty was a draw, the three sisters decide that if it hadnt been for Ashs Pikachu, all the Pokemon in the gym would be gone, so they give him the Cascade Badge anyway to Misty's displeasure.
