- Col. MacKenzie rescues a man, Tate, from a lynching for a shooting he saw to be self-defense. MacKenzie is traveling on a train with the young daughter of a friend who believes she is in love with Tate who has an outlaw background.
- Colonel MacKenzie is traveling on a train in a private rail car with Lark Walters, the young and sheltered daughter of a wealthy friend of his. At a stop in a town, he and her see a young man shoot another man in self-defense in the street. Later, MacKenzie while on the train sees the same young man being lynched. He stops the train to save him and brings him onto the train to help him escape, where the overly romantic Lark falls for the young stranger as MacKenzie tries to help him. MacKenzie tries to keep them apart, but Lark won't give up. Meanwhile, other men on the train hatch up a scheme to kidnap Lark and hold her for ransom. They recognize Tate who was in prison with one of them so he has an outlaw background. They try to get the young man, Tate, to join with them. This episode introduces Tate as a series regular as Col. MacKenzie offers him a job at Shiloh.—rbecker28
- Precious cargo, in the form of Miss Lark Walters, is being accompanied by Colonel MacKenzie by train to her uncle's place. Whilst in a town for a break Lara and the Colonel see a fist fight that ends up in a lethal gun fight!
Back on the train the Colonel Alan Mackenzie is up on the engine with the driver and a lynching is brought to his attention as they are travelling onward. On seeing this the Colonel insists the train stop so he can thwart the hanging and subsequently invites the reprieved man on board.
Lark is interested in the newcomer but is instructed to keep away from the stranger whose mysterious identity and history is a matter of interest to others on the train
