A young Coed is getting ready for a date. She deems her outfit is too Martha Stewart but no worries, her roommate comes to the rescue with a sluttier looking top. Now set for her date, heads out with her roommate chiming Dont do anything I wouldnt do to which she replies that there isnt anything she wouldnt do, to which she agrees.
On the date with a frat boy named Rich, he takes her to a dead end road to make out before they go to the party. He tries to get all touchy feely which she isnt comfortable with. While in the car we see the back of a man with a hook for his hand.
The young couple hears a scary sound, to which the guy must investigate. He sees a scratch appearing on the side of his car with no one in sight. The girl begs him to get back in the car, she then looks away and when she turns back to him, he has disappeared. She, of course, then hears scratching on the roof of the car, jumps out of the car and runs a few yards away, only to turn around and see, you guessed it, her date hanging upside down, dead, covered in blood. She then screams.
Cut to Sam and Dean discussing their father and how it seems he doesnt want to be found. Dean then shows Sam an article about the Frat boy who was killed. The article states that the sole witness says the attacker was invisible. This is enough for them to decide to investigate.
They first show up at the Frat house the guy lived at, and claim to be transfer students from another chapter of the same fraternity. Looking for a place to stay. Their new roommate tells them that Rich was a good guy and was starting to date Lori Sorenson, the local reverends hot daughter who is a freshman this year.
The brothers head over to the church and meet up with Lori after the service. She gives them the rundown of what happened, and the brothers wonder if it could be the source of the hook man urban legend. They look into arrests made in the town going back to the 1850s. They find one preacher from the 1860s who went off the deep end over his anger at the red light district and killed 13 prostitutes in one night. And guess what? He was missing a hand and had it replaced with a silver hook which he used as his murder weapon. And it all happened on the same road that the frat boy was killed.
The brothers head over to investigate the scene of the murder. Carrying their rock salt loaded shotguns (rock salt, as a spirit deterrent, wont kill a spirit, but will slow it down) are caught by the local sheriff. In the meantime, Lori has an argument with her Pastor father about her living in a house full of college girls who all want to party and drink. She says shes an adult and can take care of herself, and storms out of the car. In the house, she sees a weird scratch on one of the doorframes, but the girl inside the room is studying and doesnt notice anything. When Lori reaches her room, her roommate is asleep and not wanting to wake her, leaves the light off as she gets ready for bed and goes to sleep. The camera then zooms in on an ominous shadow hiding behind the bedroom door.
The next morning Lori wakes and sees a puddle of blood dripping from her roommates bed, only to find her roommate lying dead. So she screams and while she sees that, she sees writing on the wall arent you glad you didnt turn on the light. So she screams some more.
Dean and Sam are now walking out of the Sheriffs dept, where Dean talked the sheriff down to a fine, using the excuse that Sam was being hazed and that he was out hunting ghosts with rock salt. As they are walking away, the cops all come running out and jump into their cars, sirens screaming heading in the direction of Loris. The brothers drive by and see Lori sitting in the back of an ambulance. She sees them, as her father is asking the cops to let him take her home. The cops dont want to as she is now connected to two murders, but eventually relent asking the Reverend to make sure shes available for questioning.
In the mean time, Sam and Dean sneak around the back of the Sorority, and they climb to the second floor and sneak a peek at the crime scene. They recognize the scent of ozone which is a trademark of a spirit, thus confirming their theory. Sam also recognizes the symbol carved under the writing on the wall. Its the same symbol that was on the hook of the murderous preacher from the 1860s.
Normally their protocol would be to find his grave, and salt and burn his remains; unfortunately he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave, so no luck there. But they correctly guess that Lori has something to do with this entire thing.
Sam does some research and finds another clergyman arrested for murder in the 1930s, and in the 60s. Both men were openly preaching against immorality, and both men find themselves wanted for murder by what they claimed was an invisible force. All the killings were committed with a sharp instrument. They realize that Loris father doesn't want to save the whole town; he just wants to save his daughter. They think the spirit could be latching onto the reverend and feeding off his emotions without him realizing it.
They agree to split up. Sam will watch out for Lori tonight while Dean looks for an unmarked grave. Dean gets lucky and finds a headstone with the same mark on it as the wall and the original silver hook. After digging up the grave, he salts and burns the remains.
Sam stakes out the preachers house and witnesses an argument between Lori and her father about the Reverend being in love with a married woman, who is unhappy and going to get a divorce. Lori does not approve. As Sam sits in the dark, Lori comes out and talks to him, he tells her hes worried about her and just wants to make sure shes okay. She thinks thats really sweet but tells him he should run away from her as she seems to be cursed. Then tells him what she thinks about her father seeing a married man. Shes mad because she thinks its wrong, and she was raised believing that if you do something wrong you will be punished. Then she starts putting the moves on Sam. He kisses her back but cant do more, she correctly guesses its because of someone hes lost.
Her dad then interrupts and asks her to come inside; she angrily retorts that she will come inside when shes ready. Then the hook man appears right behind her father and stabs his hook into his shoulder dragging him inside. Sam grabs his gun and runs after. He chases up the stairs and shoots the dark figure with his rock salt loaded shotgun, saving Loris dad, the spirit then disappears for now. Lori comes running in after.
At the hospital, Lori is with her dad, as the sheriff questions Sam looking on. The sheriff tells Sam that it seems like every time he turns around Sam is in some kind of trouble. So try to stay out of it. Dean then shows up and gets Sam away from the sheriff. Sam tells him what happened including his conversation with Lori, and they conclude that the spirit latched onto Loris emotions, not the reverends. Dean asked why the salt and burning of the remains didnt work and they realize the hook was not buried with him.
More research shows the hook was donated to the church where it was reforged, but doesn't mention into what. Now night again, they go to the church and split up, Dean will search for anything silver in the church and Sam will search the house. Anything Silver goes into the fire.
As they are in the process of burning, they hear footsteps upstairs. They go to investigate and find Lori sitting on a pew in the congregation. Dean leaves to continue to burn silver. Sam comforts a weeping Lori. She knows shes to blame but doesnt know how, but shes read in the bible about avenging angels and thinks that she needs to be punished because its all because of her. The hook man appears once again they run, but the ghost just keeps coming. Sam is wonded and just when it seems the hookman is going to get Lori, Dean appears with his rock salt gun and fires, causing the apparition to disappear. They have a brief discussion about the silver that they must have missed something; Sam finally notices a silver cross around Loris neck. She tells them that her father gave it to her and it was a church heirloom. Sam rips it off her neck and tosses it to Dean. They hear the hook scratching down the wall. Dean throws the gun to Sam and heads down to the basement and throws the cross in the fire. Dean shoots at what he thinks is the ghost because its invisible again. Then frantically loads it again with one arm as the other has been injured by the hook earlier. Just as he has it loaded, he aims and has it knocked out of his hand.
The hook man stands over Sam and Lori about to strike, when the cross finally melts in the fire. The apparition then burns into ash and dust. Dean comes back and they are all safe.
The next morning Dean is being questioned by the Sheriff, he confirms that they all saw the man with the hook, that they scared him off and he ran. Then he reassures the sheriff that they are leaving town shortly. Sam is finishing up with the paramedic, and Lori comes to thank him for saving her and her fathers lives. She doesn't understand what happened but she does thank him. Sam then joins his brother in the car. Dean offers Sam that they could stay, but Sam just shakes his head and they drive off into the distance.
