  • After defeating the Borg, the Enterprise is docked for a major overhaul and refit at McKinley Station, so the crew can take shore leave in different ways. Lieutenant Worf did not expect a family visit, inappropriate for a Klingon, but his human adoptive parents, CPO Sergey and Helena Rozhenko, insist on seeing him and the whole ship. Dr. Crusher finds an old holographic recording from her late husband Jack, himself a Starfleet officer, for their son Wesley, now just turned 18. Captain Picard, who had no leave in three years, visits the family vineyard in La Barre, France with his traditionalist elder brother Robert, his wife Marie and their preteen son René. Local friend Louis urges Jean-Luc to consider a career change to the engineering project Atlantis, on Earth. After recalling bitter memories, a fraternal mud fight finally clears the air.—KGF Vissers

Descrizione

  • With the Enterprise in space dock undergoing repairs following its encounter with the Borg, several members of the crew have the opportunity for shore leave. Captain Picard returns to his home village in La Barre, France to visit his older brother Robert (Jeremy Kemp), sister-in-law Marie (Samantha Eggar) and nephew Rene. Marie invites Picard into her home, while Robert is very cold towards Picard. Picard can see that nothing has changed in his village or the house where he grew up. Rene wants to be a star ship captain when he grows up.

He hasn't been home in 20 years and has always had a difficult relationship with his brother who considered him a know-it-all; In fact, Robert calls Picard an arrogant person, while the captain viewed his brother as a bully. Robert is a grape farmer. Robert is conservative and doesn't like change and hates technology, and Picard is an adventurer, who can't sit still. Picard says values can be retained while technology can enhance and make life more convenient for humans. Robert says life is already too convenient. Robert doesn't want Picard to encourage Rene to choose a life of space and technology. The mayor of the village wants to hold a parade in Picard's honor and give him the keys to the city, but Picard declines.

Picard meets his old childhood friend Lois (Dennis Creaghan), who is a supervisor on the project aiming to raise the ocean floor and create a new continent on Earth. Lois mentions that the project is looking for a new director and wants Picard to apply. Before Picard can think, Lois has already set up his meeting with the board of Governors.

That day Robert taunts Picard about seeking adulation all his life. Picard protests and tries walk away, but Robert continues to needle and insult Picard and his achievements. Robert says that Picard came back as he wanted Robert to take care of him again. Picard calls him a bully and has a fistfight with him. They laugh after they cover each other in mud. Picard cries that the Borg took away everything he had and used it to kill his colleagues and friends and he couldn't do anything about it. He wasn't strong enough. Robert advises Picard not to hide from it, by accepting the assignment with Lois. Picard cancels the meeting with Lois and leaves for the Enterprise. Lois wants to be a star ship captain one day.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Worf welcomes his adoptive parents, CPO Sergey (Theodore Bikel) and Helena Rozhenko (Georgia Brown), on board the Enterprise. Worf still feels the sting of his dishonor on the Klingon home world and his parents know he is hurting. But Worf does not want to include them in his problem, and this hurts them more than the problem itself. They run into Guinan in the bar, who tells them that in his heart, Worf is still a boy. Sergey and Helena continue to spend time with Worf and eventually he admits that he is glad that they came to meet him. They meet Picard on their way back and are very happy that Worf is with his family on the ship.

As for Wesley Crusher, his mother gives him an old holographic recording his father made just after Wesley was born. She had kept this in storage on Earth and now got the chance to retrieve it and give it to Wesley. Deanna says that Wesley still has a lot of questions about his father and the holographic recording might just help. She encourages Beverly to share the recording with Wesley. Wesley plays it on the Holodeck.
