Jessica is in New York City to visit Philip Royce, her stock broker. Royce doesn't seem to spend very much time at the office and his secretary, Norma Pulaski, keeps things running smoothly, even giving out the stock advice to clients. Philip has just broken his engagement with Candice Ashcroft, his partner Jerome Ashcroft's daughter. When Jessica shows up at his apartment for a breakfast meeting, the place is full of police who have found Philip dead, bludgeoned with one of his own golf clubs. To make matters worse, the firm finds a $2 million discrepancy in Philip's accounts and the police suspect Norma and her fiancé, baker Rudy Bianco. Jessica suspects that corporate raider, Gordon Tully, might have been involved. The killer has made one mistake, however.
