- The government tries to silence a young scientist who has developed a deadly gas. When he finds out that his work might be used as a weapon, he flees to France. Drake is sent after him with strict instructions to keep the opposition from obtaining the fatal formula.
Upon Drake's arrival, he sees that the scientist - Ashby - is oblivious to the fact that he's being circled by vultures. Spies from other nations.
Drake does his best to keep an eye on Ashby (without showing his own hand), and hopefully- steering him into making the right - going back home - decision.
Along the way Drake gets entangled with the 'vultures,' including a woman, two men, and a mysterious stranger who always is seen wearing his sunglasses. He also must deal with the powers back home - who while Drake understands their position, thinks they're using bullying tactics to coerce Ashby.
This is one of the few episodes where Drake's job involves him with someone who really is an innocent - a scientist who just wants to do his research, and not someone who's motivated by greed, or other reasons. In a sense, Drake is almost Ashby's Guardian Angel - or, as much as he can be - hoping that, if left to his own devices, Ashby will choose wisely.
