- Theresa Jones (Zoe Saldana) takes her boyfriend, Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher), to her home to meet her parents on the occasion of her parents' 25th wedding anniversary, planning to reveal that they are engaged. However, Theresa has neglected to mention that Simon is white. The father, Percy (Bernie Mac), is already in a bad mood since the party is costing him a lot of money and his wife is making him write his own vows. Percy had already pulled Simon's credit report to check his credentials and was impressed. Percy is a loan officer and believes that he can judge a person by their credit report.
Percy's wife Marilyn made him hire Dante (Robert Curtis Brown) to plan the entire party and Percy blames him for costing him a lot of money with his grand ideas. Percy suspects that Dante is gay, but Marilyn says that he is simply a straight man with taste.
Theresa had told Percy that Simon had a good job at JP Oliver, an investment firm. But Simon didn't reveal that he just quit his job that very morning. He had a solid lead for another job with Liz Klein (Nicole Sullivan), but it would take a few days to materialize. On his way down in the elevator, Simon freaks out and he realizes that he cannot quit his job at this point.
Simon decides not to tell Theresa that he quit as Theresa had told Percy that Simon worked at JP Oliver and that made Percy like him a lot. Percy cared that the guy she dated had a steady job and a paycheck. Simon's father left him when he was 2, and he was raised by his single mother.
Theresa's sister is Keisha Jones (Kellee Stewart). Liz calls Simon in the middle of a family dinner to let him know that his ex-boss has started a rumor that Simon is under investigation for misconduct, so the job may not close as quickly as he would like.
Theresa's father, Percy, dislikes Simon almost immediately because of his race. Percy starts to inquire if Simon plays any kind of sport. Wishing to impress Percy, Simon lies to him about being on the NASCAR pit crew for Jeff Gordon (and claims to be his back-up driver), not realizing that Percy is one of Gordon's biggest fans. Simon thought Nascar was the whitest sport on the planet and was not counting on Percy being a fan. Marilyn, Percy's wife, however, likes Simon when they first meet. Percy also happens to stumble on Simon jokingly wearing Theresa's lingerie while the couple is playing around in her childhood bedroom. None of this helps endear Simon to Percy.
After catching Theresa and Simon in a compromising position, Percy tries to force Simon into a hotel, but all the hotels in town are booked (As there is a Shriner's convention in town). Instead, Percy allows Simon to sleep in his basement on the couch, where Percy also sleeps. Enough hints have been dropped that Simon and Theresa have slept together many times by now, but Percy is determined to keep them apart till the time Simon stays under his roof, even though the pull-out bed hurts his back.
With the help of his personal assistant Reggie (RonReaco Lee), Percy tries to learn as much information on Simon as he can as well as creating the ideal African American boyfriend for Theresa (a dude named Jamaal, who went to Harvard and played basketball) instead of revealing her boyfriend is white. Simon had come to see Percy at his office, when he received a call from his ex-colleague Jerry (David Krumholtz), whom he asked for a $50K loan to invest in the JP Oliver IPO coming out the following week. Simon knows the IPO will be big (as before quitting, he was the point person on the IPO) and needs the money to tide him over till he gets another job.
To test Simon's NASCAR claims, Percy takes him to a go-kart circuit and quickly finds that Simon doesn't know the first thing about driving. Simon has to admit that he lied. Simon also inquiries about the process at Percy's bank to get a $50k loan and Percy guesses that Simon needs $50K for something.
Howard Jones (Hal Williams) is Theresa's granddad. Percy goads Simon into telling African American jokes at the dinner table and while it goes funny at first, eventually Simon tells a joke that offends everyone at the table.
Percy manages to convince Simon to reveal that he lied about being a NASCAR driver and also that he needs a $50,000 loan. Simon discovers Percy's lies (Reggie called and Simon picked the phone, and he learns that Percy had said that Theresa's boyfriend was an African American man named Jamaal) just as Reggie reveals that Simon quit his job.
Immediately, Percy goes to tell Theresa this new information; however, Simon claims he was not fired and instead quit. Angry that he did not tell her the truth, Theresa leaves while Percy's spying and plagiarism of his vows temporarily strains his relationship with his wife, Marilyn (Judith Scott). The ladies leave the house. They go to live with Marilyn's sister Darlene and while Theresa is dying to call back Simon (who left 15 missed calls), the ladies tell her not to. Meanwhile Simon and Percy get drunk and spend the time playing football and Simon teaching Percy ballroom dancing (as Marilyn wanted to dance with Percy at the wedding anniversary dinner party).
The next morning, Percy and Simon find Marilyn and Theresa to apologize. While Marilyn and Percy reconcile, Simon and Theresa break up and he leaves.
On the day of his anniversary, Theresa tells her father that she and Simon were intending to marry. After wondering why a man intending to get married would quit his job, Percy realizes that Simon quit his job due to his boss' disapproval of interracial relationships. Percy pursues Simon and brings him back to Theresa, and they reconcile.
