- A distant, desolate shore in a remote part of Ireland. A lonely young sculptress, Sarah (Anne Brochet), discovers a man (James Spader) washed-up on the water's edge. He is barely conscious but Sarah manages to get him back to her ramshackle wooden cottage, where she tends to his wounds and nurses him back to health. Suffering from amnesia, he demands to know where he is, but Sarah decides to distort the truth in an attempt to keep him on the island. She tells him they are on a remote island, reached only by supply boat every few months. This is the first of many deceptions as Sarah tries to keep her visitor captive. Alone together for days on end, the two soon become lovers. Though outwardly happy, both are troubled by anxiety. Sarah is tormented by the fear that he will find out the truth and leave her, whilst the Man becomes concerned by her clinging need for love and security. As times passes, the Man becomes increasingly anxious to leave, but the measures Sarah takes to ensure he stays are becoming increasingly more extreme.—Anonymous
