Scientists have identified six children from around the world -- Paul Looran (Clive Powell) from London, Rashid (Mahdu Mathen) from India, Nina (Roberta Rex) from Russia, Aga Nagolo (Gerald Delsol) from Nigeria, Mi Ling (Yoke-Moon Lee) from China, and Mark (Frank Summerscale) from the USA -- all of whom possess superintelligence and extraordinary telepathic powers. Unfortunately, when a technician reaches for a radio mic to order the soldiers to stand down, his hand inadvertently brushes a screwdriver that rolls down into a flare-signaling device, closing the contacts on the flares and sending the signal to the soldiers to open fire! The church is ultimately destroyed. In the final scene, the children's hands can be seen in the rubble, and the camera finishes the pan by focusing on the screwdriver... the simple instrument that resulted in the termination of six children who may well have been the future of the human race.
