Touch of Evil is loosely based on the novel Badge of Evil (1956), written by "Whit Masterson", a pseudonym for authors Robert Wade and William Miller.

Check out Pugno di ferro (1936), in which James Cagney plays the head of the Bureau of Weights and Measures in NYC. His character goes up against crooked politicians, the criminal underground, a prominent philanthropist, and grocers who add a few ounces to their packages in order to cheat the public.
