From playing the affable romantic lead in #Pellichoopulu to a temperamental surgeon with a troubled past in Arjun Reddy, Vijay Deverakonda has displayed his versatility as a young and upcoming actor in Indian films. He talks to IMDb about his first IMDb credit, his performance in Arjun Reddy, working with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and more in this exclusive interview.
* This interview was edited for length.
IMDb: What was the most challenging part of getting into the role of Arjun Reddy? Are there any rituals, music, or exercises that help you play a character?
Vijay Deverakonda: The content was so strong and character so well written, that it consumed me as soon as I heard the narration. I understood him, why he felt and behaved the way he did. I was just channeling the emotions I felt from what the director wrote. Externally we built him and styled him a particular way, the only ritual I chose to do was to stay away from watching Rom-coms and light hearted cinema. I stuck to watching dark dramas just to keep me in the space of mind I wanted to be in.
What movie projects are you working on at the moment? And what’s your approach to selecting the perfect script?
Vijay Deverakonda: I just wrapped up my shooting schedule for an untitled supernatural thriller, am on the sets of an untitled romantic comedy and will make an appearance in director Nag Ashwin's Mahanati. Plus, I have 4 other projects set to hit the floors in 2018 and 2019.
The approach I take in selecting a script is based on what I fancy from the the scripts I'm offered.
Tell us about your first IMDb credit, Nuvvila (2011)?
Vijay Deverakonda: IMDb users really take the database seriously :). A learning experience is the best way to sum up my first film credit. it's hard to break into the film industry, and it was a minor role but still my only shot at the movies while I was doing theater.
