Festival Announcement of the Week
"The Bad Boy of Cannes" is a nickname that Lars von Trier probably gave to himself, but the festival's 2018 lineup caught fire this week when it was announced that von Trier would return to the Croisette seven years after nearly committing career suicide as he spoke about his then-new work Melancholia. By saying he sympathized with Hitler, the filmmaker, who has always shaded his public persona with mostly dark inks, was cast out of the Cannes family (imagine what it might have been like if he had appeared in 2013 with Shia LaBeouf for the Nymphomaniac double feature). Next month, von Trier will debut The House That Jack Built, a thriller co-starring Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman. If he has a non-narcisstic impulse, perhaps he'd wisely let Uma do all the talking.
