Melissa Benoist in Supergirl (2015)

While attending the PaleyFest TV festival in Los Angeles, "Supergirl" star Melissa Benoist revealed that the rest of the season will be centered on just how capable the Girl of Steel really is at this stage of the game. "What we wanted to focus on in the last half of the season the most was that question of power," says Benoist. "And for someone who has so much of it, it teeters on the question of how is she going to use it? How do we discern that her judgment of the right way to use it is the right way to use it? She makes mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes have really bad, huge consequences."

Grant Gustin in The Flash (2014)

Along the way, however, there'll be plenty of fast-paced fun. The speed gets kicked up a notch when Grant Gustin guest stars as the Flash on the March 28 episode, finding his way to the parallel earth that serves as home to National City. If just seeing Superman's cousin and her fleet-footed fellow superhero from the CW on screen together isn't enough of a treat, executive producer Greg Berlanti promises that the chemistry between Benoist and Gustin is the cherry on top.

"The best part is them," says Berlanti. "I mean, I’d be shocked if they didn’t do other things together in their lifetime. They’re really, really great together."

Mehcad Brooks in Supergirl (2015)

In fact, their dynamic does not escape the attention of the newly single James Olsen, reveals Mehcad Brooks. "The crossover is funny because Barry is a superhero, obviously, and he and Kara have that in common," says Brooks. "So, James is a little jealous and wondering what the hell is going on: Why is this guy kind of hitting on the girl he likes? There’s this really funny sort of dynamic between Barry and James, and it works out well."

Jeremy Jordan in Supergirl (2015)

Now that Winn Schott's love interest Siobhan Smythe (Italia Ricci) is on the brink of a transformation into the villainous Silver Banshee, expect Winn to get caught up in the conflict as well. "He definitely gets mixed up with the Flash drama," says Jeremy Jordan. "The DEO is starting to realize that he is sort of an asset when it comes to dealing with computer issues, as he destroyed the blue alien last week. So, yeah, he becomes definitely a more integral part of saving the world and all that stuff, which is very exciting for him as he's probably never thought that he could do anything past fix a computer virus."

Chyler Leigh and Melissa Benoist in Supergirl (2015)

Berlanti reveals that, while the show awaits the green light for a second season, an early renewal wouldn't have altered the big picture plan for Season 1 of "Supergirl." "We kind of always execute the storylines in a way that we feel will be the most gratifying regardless, and leave it all on the field," he says. "And we also like the seasons to have their own beginning, middle, and an end. So, pretty much a lot of the storylines are going to be kind of wrapped up. There’s one hopefully really cool twist for the very end of the year."

Melissa Benoist in Supergirl (2015)

Benoist, however, finds the close-out plotlines considerably more nerve-wracking. "There’s like eight cliffhangers at the end of the season!" she marvels. "What’s so interesting about [Supergirl] is that she’s kind of got this daily battle of 'How do I juggle all of this? How do I have a normal life?’ while still having to leave in a moment’s notice and maybe risk her life? She’s constantly in this struggle for normalcy versus superheriosm. It’s not easy."

If the show does indeed return as expected for a second season, that struggle will get even more intense. "She spent this season becoming super, really honing her super-skills," says executive producer Ali Adler. "For next season, we hope to explore Kara’s personal life more, her professional life more, and really get a balance for her."
