During a stop at WonderCon in Los Angeles over the weekend, Caity Lotz, Ciara Renée, and Franz Drameh, stars of the CW's "Legends of Tomorrow," revealed how the personal lives of White Canary, Hawkgirl, and Firestorm overshadow their powers in the episodes ahead. — Scott Huver

Hawkgirl’s budding romance with the Atom continues to exist in the long shadow of her eternal love, Hawkman. "It's hard because obviously Hawkman and Hawkgirl are unique in the fact that they've lived for so long," Ciara Renée says. "They have so much wisdom and knowledge and all these memories that no one else shares with them. They're the only two — and Savage, obviously. In that way, there’s a bond there that just can't be broken. They're the only two that have this kind of experience."

“But then, when I look at Ray (Brandon Routh), he has so much light and positivity and joy and confidence, too,” she adds. "He's very confident in a way that she's not at this present moment, and I think she kind of gets a little dark and a little down on herself. I think he brings her out of that. He’s a good balance for her, but I also think that when people are at two different spots in their life, it’s hard to keep that together and to grow in a parallel fashion. So, we'll see." Renée’s assessment doesn’t even factor the half of Firestorm who’s also quietly pining away for Kendra. "Jax has a crush," she says. "Yeah, I don’t know that that’s even really registered for Kendra. I think she’s kind of like, 'Oh, he’s cute. Darling little man.'"

For his part, Franz Drameh says Jax is slightly wounded but still a team player. "He’s still a little bit sore in the upcoming episode. But Ray and Jackson actually develop a really nice friendship." Another vastly improved dynamic is the one between Jax and Professor Stein (Victor Garber), he adds. "Their relationship is definitely getting a lot better. They started off at loggerheads because they’re so different, but they come together and understand each other and develop a really nice relationship."

And viewers will be getting a closer look at the forces that shaped Jax into who he is today. "We’re definitely going to explore more of his background and where he comes from and his relationship with his family and his parents and stuff like that. And with Firestorm, I don’t want to give away too much, but we definitely do some very, very cool stuff coming up. He’s definitely learning a lot more about his powers and what he can do."

Caity Lotz in Legends of Tomorrow (2016)

"White Canary’s adventures are slowly bringing her out of the dark place she landed in on "Arrow," says Caity Lotz. "I think there’s definitely levity and maybe a little bit more acceptance of Sara’s darkness, which can shed light on it just by being like, 'OK, this is part of me' — being OK with it and not hating herself for it. But she definitely still has a lot of edge to her. I think that what she has gained from that lightness is not very solid. It could be very easily taken away."

Sara found room for a little romance with the nurse she encountered in the 1950s, but Lotz says that the superheroine is definitely not looking for love at the moment: "This season definitely wasn’t about love for Sara. That was the last thing on her mind. She starts to love herself, which I think she’s starting to do a little bit more. Then maybe she can think about loving someone else and actually being in a relationship. It’s hard to have a relationship on a spaceship!"

Her non-romantic connections among the group, especially among teammates Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller) and Hawkgirl, will continue to evolve. "None of the relationships have gone as deep as I wanted to yet. These people are just meeting each other. I'm glad we have a next season so we can explore those things more. Sara hasn’t even had any scenes with Jax or Ray Palmer. I don't think we've ever had a scene just the two of us. So, there’s all these different dynamics that are yet to be explored that will be interesting."
