For the sea battle sequences, Christopher Nolan decided to use real naval destroyers instead of CGI, continuing his own tradition. At one point, there were as many as 62 ships out on the water during one day of filming. He also placed cardboard cutouts of soldiers and military vehicles in the distant background of certain shots to create the illusion of a large army.
