Eleanor and Robert decide that if he breaks off the engagement, the ensuing scandal would ruin his chances for election. After winning, Robert marries Adele, who continues her affair, but Lennox tires of her and pursues Eleanor. When Eleanor's brother Clifford learns of Lennox's insulting advances, he threatens to kill him. Because Lennox persists, Clifford goes to thrash him, but discovers him dead. Found with the body, Clifford is sentenced to death, and when his appeal is unsuccessful, Eleanor goes to Robert's hunting lodge to plead for a stay of execution. After she spends the night because of a storm, Adele accuses them of adultery, but later she breaks down, confesses killing Lennox, and drowns herself.

Churlton pursues them, and, after several narrow escapes, Dick is captured by the royal guards and sentenced to be hanged. On the scaffold, Dick is told by his friend, Tom King, who has taken the hangman's place, that the crowd is sympathetic; and Dick makes his escape, riding his horse to York. Dick finds the house where Alice is being held prisoner, kills Churlton, and escapes to France with Alice, whom he marries. Dick gives up his profession and settles down to family life.

Aline then travels to Palm Beach, Florida, accompanied by Pop and her sister, Jess Alden, while Phil remains in the North with Bernice. In Florida, Aline engages in a flirtation with Phil's old college friend, Wayne Annis, and when her husband, now weary of Bernice, comes to Florida, she gives him a chilly reception. Wayne, who has fallen in love with Jess, agrees to help Pop effect the married couple's reconciliation by arousing Phil's jealousy. The plan works so well, however, that the enraged husband nearly shoots his old friend. In the end, the friendship is preserved, Aline and Phil are reunited, and Wayne professes his love for Jess.

Rance goes prospecting and returns just as Mike Dyer arrives in town. Dyer is shot by an unknown assailant, and Rance takes the blame in order to protect Maggie; Maggie also confesses to the crime (to protect Rance), and the puzzled sheriff finally calls Dyer's death a suicide. Having cured himself of drunkenness, Rance, who turns out to be the son of wealthy parents, asks Maggie to marry him.

Meanwhile, Gilbert, who has married Belle Galloway, a designing spinster, is shocked to learn that Edith is a cabaret dancer and has her committed to a reformatory, where she is crushed mentally and physically. Discovering that Belle is only a scheming hypocrite, however, Gilbert pays her to leave him, and he seeks out Edith to atone for the past. They go abroad, and Edith is happily reunited with Norman.

At a fancy-dress ball, when Ray wears a costume made of newspaper headlines concerning her arrest, Egypt is offended. Seen constantly in the company of Reverend Lodge, her reputation causes church people to take up the matter with the bishop. Leaving the country club, Egypt goes to the Lodge home and hides behind the door when the bishop arrives; Reverend Lodge wants to marry her, and they admit their love; but humiliation causes her to leave with Sturgis that night. Their yacht is wrecked, but Lodge and the bishop follow and rescue Egypt, though Sturgis is drowned. The bishop, realizing the depth of their love, consents to marry them.

Meanwhile, Homer returns to New York, convinces his employers of the merits of his plan and comes home triumphant, with a proposal for both the new plant and for Rachel's hand in marriage.

Later, in the caves he re-appears and in the ensuing fight falls over a cliff edge after the money. Steve throws the incriminating document after him. Melodrama involving a treasure hunt and an old blackmail system during the war, which is cleared up by a bodyguard.

Rob meets Olive Spencer and her brother Jerry; and though Olive is drawn to Rob, she is unhappy to learn that the lake to be created by the dam will flood her old home. Rob's college pals arrive and take him to a party, resulting in his discharge by Webster. Shortly afterward, Webster is found murdered; suspicion falls on Rob, who is arrested and found guilty. At the last moment before the scheduled electrocution, Olive learns that her half-crazed brother, Jerry, killed Webster; and she tries to save Rob. Rollins is obliged to remain on duty and throw the fatal switch. He faints, thinking he has killed his son; but Jerry has atoned by cutting the main prison cable, saving Rob's life but losing his own.
