- Danny is a lonely 10-year-old living on a ranch in Arizona. His parents are at odds. Danny and his chimpanzee friend Max, who can talk, have a series of adventures in which the adults, the police, or a pack of ruffian kids all want to capture Max. The family finds new strength to remain a family, and Danny and Max sing a rousing hip hop song at a country fair. Max tells the entire story as a flashback to a TV reporter while he takes a limo to a celebrity event in Hollywood.
- Hobo poet Sundown Slim meets his old friend Billy Corliss in a Western saloon. Billy, in poor health as a result of injuries sustained in a train wreck, now owns the Concho cattle ranch with his brother Jack who runs the ranch. Sundown obtains a job at the Concho and becomes embroiled in the Corliss' battle with their sheep rancher neighbors, the Fernandos. When Loring, one of Jack's employees, attacks Fernando's daughter Anita, Jack fires him but Fernando, not satisfied, vows revenge on Jack, then shoots Billy by mistake. Loring, in an attempt to get rid of the sheep rancher, kills Fernando but Slim tracks down the crooked cattleman and settles accounts with him. Meanwhile, Anita nurses Billy back to health and, although Sundown also loves the sheep rancher's daughter, he gives her up in the name of friendship.
- Finding himself out of funds, cowboy Dick Rainboldt accepts a job from an employment agency which sends him to the Torpedo mine in San Clemente. En route, he meets Katie Wigfall and is immediately attracted to the girl. Upon his arrival, Dick is amazed to discover that he has been employed as a strikebreaker, but determines to see the job through even though he disagrees with its objectives. Upon learning that the owner of the mine is being misled by his manager and superintendent, Dick determines to rectify the situation. After accepting money from the conspirators to blow up the mine tunnel, Dick uses the incident to expose the plotters, winning for himself a hefty promotion as well as Katie's love.
- Quartus Hembly, a man without a conscience, is the ruler of the town of Copper City, having made himself rich at the expense of his workers. When Donald Keith, a young lawyer, arrives in town, a hidden spring within him is touched after Hembly viciously kicks his dog. Keith refuses to leave town and warns Hembly that he will fight to see that the people get their rights. Keith's only ally is Thora Erickson, the daughter of Hembly's henchman. Keith's opportunity to topple Hembly presents itself when he rescues Bill Wheeler, who, out of gratitude, confesses that it was Hembly who dynamited the log jam years earlier. With the lawyers and the courts in the palm of his hand, Hembly is acquitted, but the townspeople are so outraged that they capture Hembly and tie him to the whipping post. He is rescued by Keith, who forces a full confession for all Hembly's crimes and then allows him to leave town. Keith is then made district attorney, Thora becomes his bride, and Copper City becomes a decent place in which to live.
