Factual errors

During the phone call between Sherry and Stan, 'The End of the World' by Skeeter Davis can be heard playing in the background. The record was not released until December 1962, two months after the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Dennis is watching Art Linkletter's "House Party" when it's interrupted by a bulletin from NBC News. "House Party" aired on CBS.
The film depicts many of the live theater effects that William Castle pioneered, including the buzzing seats, the costumed creature in-house performance, nurse's stations, lobby/box office displays, and sculptures. However, Castle films never used more than one major effect for any given movie, and the rumble in the theater floor was not invented until 1974, for Terremoto (1974).
Gene and Jesse are shown watching a television program when it is interrupted by the bulletin of President John F. Kennedy announcing the presence of the missiles in Cuba. They also show surprise at the interruption. The actual broadcast of the President's address took place at 7pm on October 22, and preempted the start of any regularly scheduled programs. It also had been widely announced in media outlets earlier and throughout the day that the President was going to be making an important address at 7:00 p.m., and the networks had their news anchors on the air several minutes before the address commenced. So it is highly unlikely that the address would have interrupted the middle of a program as shown, or that anyone watching would have been surprised by the interruption.

In addition, the program ran at 2:30 p.m., but the speech was at 7:00 p.m., and by 7:00 p.m. in Florida on October 22, 1962, the sun would have set, but in the film it is broad daylight outside during the speech.
They are listening to an LP record of 'The Sick Humor of Lenny Bruce', which was on the Fantasy Records label. The record that he puts on the turntable is on the Columbia Records label.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

The aircraft shown flying along the beach are A-4 Skyhawks, which flew with the US Navy and Marine Corps from 1956 until 2003. Marine Attack Squadron 242 (VMA-242) based at Cherry Point, NC deployed to NAS Key West, FL during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962; therefore, the aircraft shown are the actual models flown during the time depicted in the movie.
When Sherry asks Stan if they really have a fallout shelter, Stan replies that, yes, it's in their basement. As most of Florida is just above sea level and on coral limestone, basements are seen as impractical and aren't very common, though due to the maximum elevation, there are a few.

Anachronisms

The Aurora model kit of "The Mummy" seen in Gene and Dennis' room was manufactured in 1963, one year after the movie takes place.
When Lawrence and Gene are walking out of the Hardware store they encounter a handicap curb cut, which of course did not exist in 1962.
The LP "The First Family" is seen in the record rack to the right of the phonograph when the boys are removing the Lenny Bruce LP from the record player. "The First Family" was recorded in October, 1962, the same time that the Cuban missile crisis was going on, and it had not yet been released.
The "Good & Plenty" sign above the candy counter has the contemporary artwork used when this film was made. In the 1960s, there was no ampersand between the words - it was "Good and Plenty" - and used a different font with black background, not purple.
The story is set in 1962, but the boys' haircuts are right out of 1992.
