However, Walter actually "jump-started" the life force within the cocoons once they were transferred to the pool house. He performs this task after igniting the light within them using his illuminated hand. Only then were the others able to benefit from their healing properties.
When the old folks all invade the pool house, there is a fellow on the deck of the pool trying to crack open the cocoon. A few seconds earlier, that same fellow is in the middle of the pool when Walter catches everyone. The fellow is subsequently in two places at the same time.

But since the cocoons had been resting at the ocean floor for centuries, then wouldn't the fish and other organisms swimming in close proximity have drawn this energy long before the cocoons were extracted from the ocean? If so, then there would be no way for the elderly people to receive energy transfers from the cocoons.
