1. Suspiria (I) (2018)
R | 152 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery
A darkness swirls at the center of a world-renowned dance company, one that will engulf the artistic director, an ambitious young dancer, and a grieving psychotherapist. Some will succumb to the nightmare. Others will finally wake up.
Votes: 10,174 | Gross: $2.45M
Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' may be a controversial pick, but is hands down my favorite film of the year. The meticulousness and care of every sequence from the film left me completely floored from the moment it started. The icing on the cake is Thom Yorke's amazing score and soundtrack!
2. Hereditary (2018)
R | 127 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery
After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets.
Votes: 109,825 | Gross: $44.07M
Clearly, I'm a horror fan. And being a horror fan, there was A LOT of hype leading up to 'Hereditary', and I'm glad it lived up to it. Ari Aster did a masterful job of storytelling and cinematography for the film that will place 'Hereditary' in highest echelon of horror for years to come.
3. Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
PG-13 | 94 min | Documentary, Biography
An exploration of the life, lessons, and legacy of iconic children's television host, Fred Rogers.
Votes: 10,946 | Gross: $22.61M
Won't You Be My Neighbor? shook me to the core, the last 30 minutes were almost too intense of an emotional journey to watch in a theatre in the best way possible.
4. First Man (2018)
PG-13 | 141 min | Biography, Drama, History
A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
Votes: 58,182 | Gross: $44.80M
Damien Chazelle can do no wrong, and the extremely claustrophobic 'First Man' shows that he's continuing to grow as the most technical director alive.
5. Sorry to Bother You (2018)
R | 111 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Sci-Fi
In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, telemarketer Cassius Green discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a universe of greed.
Votes: 24,301 | Gross: $17.49M
I was told not to read anything about 'Sorry to Bother You', and I'm glad I didn't. I hope Boots Riley keeps directing as this was the most unique film I saw all year.
6. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
PG-13 | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
During an adventure into the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and encounters Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebellion.
Votes: 179,396 | Gross: $213.77M
Han Solo is my favorite character in the Star Wars galaxy, and 'Solo' absolutely lived up to everything I wanted from his origin story. Alden Ehrenreich had the hardest job in the world by agreeing to play Han Solo and had me bought into his portrayal throughout the whole movie.
7. Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
PG-13 | 120 min | Comedy, Romance
This contemporary romantic comedy, based on a global bestseller, follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend's family.
Votes: 54,943 | Gross: $173.99M
As an Asian American, I went into the film just happy it was made, and left happy it was awesome! Michelle Yeoh's Eleanor Young was one of my favorite roles of the year.
8. Game Night (I) (2018)
R | 100 min | Action, Comedy, Crime
A group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters.
Votes: 132,896 | Gross: $69.00M
'Game Night' is one of my favorite comedies of the last few years. The writing is incredibly clever and delivered by a standout cast. The plot keeps developing and swerving in ways that you don't expect and is the kind of movie you'll need to re-watch to catch all the details the team put in.
9. Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller
Ethan Hunt and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.
Votes: 183,070 | Gross: $220.16M
Watching 'Fallout' in IMAX was the most fun I had in a theatre in a long time. Tom Cruise continues to push the Mission: Impossible franchise and I can't wait to see what insanity he brings to the next installment.
10. In Fabric (2018)
118 min | Comedy, Horror
In Fabric is a haunting ghost story set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store and follows the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences..
I watched this at a midnight screening at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX and could not stop thinking about it for the next few days. Absolutely one of the most bizarre movies I've seen with awesome performances by Marienne Jean-Baptiste and Fatma Mohamed.
