Top 10 Stars of 2020by IMDb-Editors | last updated - 2 months ago
As the year comes to a close, we present the Top 10 Stars of 2020 on IMDb. Here's how we arrived at our list: We looked at the 10 stars who consistently ranked the highest on IMDbPro's weekly STARmeter chart throughout 2020. STARmeter rankings are based on the actual pageviews of IMDb's more than 200 million unique monthly visitors.
10. Henry Cavill (Previous Year: Unranked)
Henry Cavill may be best known for his blockbusters, but it was two Netflix literary adaptations (and maybe that Instagram video of him assembling his new gaming computer) that landed him in the Top Stars list this year. Cavill starred as the white-haired monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia, in "The Witcher," an IMDb fan-favorite fantasy series that dropped at the end of 2019 and also earned co-stars Freya Allan and Anya Chalotra positions on IMDb’s Top Breakout Stars list. He was back on the streaming service in September, this time as Sherlock Holmes starring alongside Millie Bobby Brown in Enola Holmes. We’ll have more Cavill to look forward to in the new year, with Zack Snyder's Justice League and (fingers-crossed) Season 2 of "The Witcher."
9. Linda Cardellini (Previous Year: 14)
Linda Cardellini has been on the scene since she was a teen, starring as wannabe cool-kid Lindsey Weir in "Freaks and Geeks" in the late '90s, but she's risen on the radar in recent years with a three-season role in "Bloodline" and appearances in the MCU as Hawkeye’s wife, Laura Barton. She launched into the top ten in 2020 thanks to the Season 2 release of Netflix’s hilarious dark-comedy series "Dead to Me," where she plays endearing pathological liar, Judy Hale. We can't get enough of her dynamic with onscreen BFF Christina Applegate, and look forward to the show's return (soon, we hope) for a third and final season.
8. Anya Taylor-Joy (Previous Year: 84)
Anya Taylor-Joy has serious endgame: She successfully castled her way on to our Top 10 Stars of 2020 list right at the end of the year, as "The Queen's Gambit" has become the unexpected hit of a most unpredictable year. Up next for the always-mesmerizing performer — aside from serious Golden Globes buzz — is a reunion with The Witch director Robert Eggers and getting physically and mentally prepared to play young Furiosa in the upcoming Fury Road spin-off movie.
7. Aidan Gallagher (Previous Year: Unranked)
"The Umbrella Academy" star Aidan Gallagher stands out among the wild collection of heroes in the adopted Hargreeves family with a performance that brought him to No. 7 in our Top 10 Stars of 2020. Not every young actor could tackle the challenge of playing a weathered ex-hero surviving the apocalypse who time-travels into the body of his younger self, but Aidan makes it look effortless (and somehow not ridiculous). Aidan's winning portrayal launched him up our STARmeter this year as fans binged Season 2 of "The Umbrella Academy" and eagerly await what's in store for Season 3.
6. Margot Robbie (Previous Year: 9)
Welcome back, Margot Robbie! We’re not really surprised to see Robbie in the Top Stars list in 2020 — she had a very good year with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Bombshell, and followed up with the reprisal of quirky anti-hero Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (which she also produced). And in case you started to miss her over the summer, she was back in the STARmeter top 30 in August with a DC Fandome trailer drop for James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad. With a long slate of projects lined up for 2021, there’s a good chance we’ll see her back here this time next year.
5. Erin Moriarty (Previous Year: 2)
Back in September, "The Boys" delivered a Season 2 that felt like a double dose of Compound V — totally stronger, deadlier, and more addictive than the first hit of the show. Season 2 might have introduced a sketchy new supe with Stormfront (Aya Cash), but no one could steal focus from Starlight, as Erin Moriarty — who nearly topped our Top 10 Stars list in 2019 — makes it 2-for-2 in 2020 with a repeat performance on our chart. Moriarty will be back for Season 3 of "The Boys," which will reportedly begin shooting in early 2021.
4. Millie Bobby Brown (Previous Year: 12)
She's charmed young and old alike as Eleven for three seasons of "Stranger Things," but Millie Bobby Brown is coming into her own. While her role in 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters may have been overshadowed by ... well, everything, she scored big with a starring role in Netflix's Enola Holmes, proving she has the talent and grace to carry a film as a lead.
3. Anya Chalotra (Previous Year: Unranked)
Anya Chalotra pulled double duty this year, ranking on both our Breakout Stars and Top 10 Stars lists. The reason? Well, sorcery, obviously. Anya cast a spell over audiences worldwide with her portrayal of the sorceress Yennifer of Vengenberg in the Netflix fantasy series, "The Witcher." Her performance brought her to No. 1 on STARmeter for four weeks and helped make "The Witcher" an early renewal for Season 2, coming in 2021.
2. Julia Garner (Previous Year: Unranked)
Julia Garner has quietly delivered a string of impressive performances in series such as "Waco," "The Americans," and "Maniac" over the years, but her run as Ruth Langmore in "Ozark" is what really let her talent out of the bag. Her portrayal of Ruth is anything but subtle, what with the character's tendency to rattle off more expletives in a given sentence than you thought possible. Over three seasons, she has slowly peeled back the layers on a once callous character to reveal her reluctant vulnerability underneath, and she'll return for the show's fourth and final season, which is slated to have a whopping 14 episodes. Next up? Starring as scheming fake heiress, Anna Delvey, in Shonda Rhimes' upcoming Netflix series, "Inventing Anna."
1. Ana de Armas (Previous Year: 87)
Though it came out waaay back in November 2019, Knives Out has left a lasting impression in 2020, including the star power of Ana de Armas in her breakout role. The Cuban-Spanish actress caught many fans' attention as Ryan Gosling's AI girlfriend in Blade Runner 2049, but her performance in Rian Johnson's thriller stood out among the ensemble cast of heavyweight actors. Next up for Ana: a reunion with Knives co-star Daniel Craig in his last James Bond film, No Time to Die.
