Rachel Bloom Wins Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
With the possible exception of a couple of the Best Foreign Language Film nominees, Rachel Bloom was the most obscure Golden Globes nominee. Her show, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is critically acclaimed but flies below the radar. Bloom was genuinely gobsmacked when she won, beating out big stars including Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lily Tomlin. However, one could make the case that her win is in keeping with the Golden Globes pattern: Last year another star of a quirky CW series, Gina Rodriguez, won the category. "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is also a musical, justifying the Globes insistence on classifying the category as "Musical or Comedy."
"Mozart in the Jungle" Wins Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy
When "Mozart in the Jungle" was announced as the winner, many viewers probably said, "Who in the what?" The comedy about an orchestra, while well-regarded, did not generate a lot of publicity during its first season. Its second season, which is what won the award, was just released to the public Dec. 30. Golden Globes voters got an early peek. The show beat out heavy-hitters including "Orange Is the New Black" and "Veep." Given that many of the Golden Globes voters are from Europe, the home of classical music, the subject matter may have helped "Mozart in the Jungle" beat its competition.
Gael Garcia Bernal Wins Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy
How big of an upset was Gael Garcia Bernal's win? Fellow nominee Aziz Ansari held up a fake "How to Lose Gracefully to Jeffrey Tambor" book when the category was announced. Instead, the Golden Globe went to Bernal, the star of "Mozart in the Jungle." Bernal is a well-known actor whose credits include the films Babel and The Motorcycle Diaries. So, his win wasn't completely out of left field, but he was definitely a dark horse.
Lady Gaga Is Really Bad at Feigning Surprise
According to the Golden Globes voters, Lady Gaga's performance in "American Horror Story" was better than Queen Latifah's in "Bessie" and Kirsten Dunst's in "Fargo". Many critics would disagree, but the Globes have often been swayed by fame, and Lady Gaga was the most famous nominee in the category. The true surprise was how bad Lady Gaga was at acting surprised. In her acceptance speech, she said, "I feel like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film Moonstruck." Unless she's secretly a regular contributor to IMDb (which would be awesome), that was a very well-rehearsed line.
Cookie Brings Cookies
Even frontrunners at awards shows typically claim to be shocked that they have won. Taraji P. Henson's win for Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama was not a surprise, but the way she upended awards show conventions was. On her way to the stage, she handed out cookies to the audience in honor of Cookie Lyon, the character she plays on "Empire." She was so confident that she would win that she brought baked goods! On stage, in addition to thanking her co-stars and agents, she thanked fans for tweeting about her. Like Cookie, Henson kept it real.
Rami Malek Doesn't Win a Golden Globe
Some articles have described "Mr. Robot's" win in the Best Television Series - Drama category as an upset. Actually, the series has already won a Gotham Award and has racked up nominations for the upcoming WGA Awards, SAG Awards, and Critics' Choice Awards. The real shock was that its star Rami Malek was passed over for Best Actor in a Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama, especially given that his co-star Christian Slater won for Supporting Actor. It's not that the winner Jon Hamm was a bad choice, but it seemed like "Mr. Robot" would go 3 for 3.
Steve Jobs Gets Some Love
After its poor performance at the box office, Steve Jobs seemed unlikely to win any major awards. The consensus seemed to be that the movie did not measure up to screenwriter Aaron Sorkin's previous film about a Silicon Valley genius, The Social Network. Surprise! Not only did Sorkin win the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay - Motion Picture, but Kate Winslet, who played Joanna Hoffman in the film, won for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
Ricky Gervais' Humor Is Dated, Not Daring
Based on his past hosting stints, everyone expected Ricky Gervais to make edgy jokes. What was surprising was that this year his humor was so out of date. His jokes about Jeffrey Tambor playing a transgender character, after Tambor's Emmy for the role in 2015 and Caitlyn Jenner's very public transition, made Gervais seem like he's been living in a cave since the last time he hosted the show.
Amy Schumer's Squad Wins Big
If you want to win a Golden Globe, hang out with Amy Schumer. The comedian lost in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical category, but her BFF Jennifer Lawrence won. Schumer's co-star in the movie Trainwreck, Brie Larson, won Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for her performance in Room. Many pundits expected both Larson and Lawrence to win, but Schumer seems to be a good luck charm.
The Big Short Falls Short
The Big Short was nominated for four Golden Globe Awards. It was considered a frontrunner in both the Best Motion Picture - Comedy and the Best Screenplay - Categories. Stars Steve Carrell and Christian Bale were nominated in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy category. The film did not win a single Golden Globe. It lost in two categories to The Martian, a movie many believe belonged in the drama category.
